The Big Bang Theory: Pilot

Leonard and Sheldon visit a high IQ sperm bank, but have regrets about going, so they leave, only to feel guilty afterwards. When they arrive back at the apartment, they see a beautiful blond woman, Penny, in the apartment across the hallway and they attempt to befriend her. Sheldon, who has no experience being around someone like Penny, doesn’t know what to do, while Leonard really takes a shine to her. Meanwhile, Howard makes numerous attempts to impress Penny, while Koothrappali is too shy to talk to her.

Episode Notes
The equations on the whiteboard are actual physics and quantum mechanics equations. The series had a physicist consult for the equations and jargon used in the episode.

This episode is the first and only episode of the series in which the title does not have "The", words that describe one of the two plots, and not a mathematical, theoretical or scientific term in it.

This episode reveals the combined IQ of Leonard and Sheldon being 360, which is (either coincidentally or intended) the same as all the angles of a square summed up.

Apparently, Leonard and Sheldon's bathroom have a shower curtain displaying the periodic table of elements.

This episode reveals that Howard can talk six languages, including Russian, Arabic and Farsi.

This episode reveals that Sheldon has a sister who hostesses at Fuddruckers, but that's all we know so far.

Apparently, Leonard currently owns 2600 comic books (and that’s just about Superman).

Episode Quotes
Sheldon: There's some poor woman who's going to pin her hopes on my sperm. What if she winds up with a toddler who doesn't know if he should use an integral or a differential to solve for the area under a curve?
Leonard: I'm sure she'll still love him.
Sheldon: I wouldn't.

Penny: So... what do you guys do for fun around here?
Sheldon: Well, today we tried masturbating for money.

Leonard: That's probably enough about us. So tell us about you.
Penny: Ok... I'm a Sagittarius, which probably tells you way more than you need to know.
Sheldon: Yes, it tells us that you participate in the mass cultural delusion that the sun's apparent position in relation to arbitrarily defined constellations at the time of your birth somehow affects your personality.

Penny: I'm a vegetarian... well, except for fish... and the occasional steak. I love steak!!
Sheldon: That's interesting. Leonard can't process corn.

Penny: God, you know, four years I lived with him. Four years! That's like as long as high school!
Sheldon: It took you four years to get through high school??

Sheldon: (talking about Penny) You're not done with her, are you?
Leonard: Our babies will be smart and beautiful.
Sheldon: Not to mention imaginary.

Episode Goofs
When Leonard tells Sheldon to sit, Leonard has his hand on the chair's arm rest, but when the dialogue comes, the hand's off, and then when we go back to the previous angle, the hand is back on the arm rest.

In one shot when Penny has sat down on Sheldon's sit, a cushion on the other side of the couch is perfectly placed for a few different angles, but when Sheldon sits down on the sit with the cushion, the cushion has been turned (you can tell by the buttons sewn on it).

While Penny showers and asks Leonard for a favor, we can in one shot see a red comb on the top of the toilet, but after a few changes in the angles we go back to the same shot, but the red comb has been re-positioned without any of the characters in the scene touching it.

In the scene where Leonard, Sheldon and Penny are eating take-out and talking with each other, a blanket on the couch behind Penny continuously changes from clean to dirty and reverse.

Cultural References
Visual: Howard attempts to impress Penny by playing World of Warcraft in front of her and inviting her to go on a quest with him.

World of Warcraft (often referred to as "WoW") is a multiplayer online role-playing game made by Blizzard Entertainment. It is the fourth release in the game-series of "Warcraft" and the game was released on November 23, 2004 (on the 10th anniversary of the "Warcraft" franchise.)

Sheldon: We're gonna start season two of Battlestar Galactica.

Battlestar Galactica is a franchise of sci-fi TV shows and movies. The franchise started in 1978 with a TV show and has had many sequels afterwards, such as another TV show, book adaptions, original novels, comic books and video games. Sheldon, Leonard, Howard and Rajesh are big fans of this franchise and "Battlestar Galactica" is talked about throughout this show.

Visual: Sheldon wears a sweater with an image of, and a text saying, "Flash".

This is a reference to multiple fictional comic book superheroes from the DC Comics. Though there are many versions of the superhero, all of them have one thing in common; "The Flash" has the superpower of "super-speed", in which "he" has the ability to move extremely fast, use superhuman reflexes and violate certain laws of physics (hence, "Flash" as in extremely fast).

Penny: Klingon Boggle?

Klingon Boggle (a popular game played by the guys) is technically a parody of the game "Boggle". "Boggle" is a word game in which players roll a lettered dice, and then they have to find words in sequences of adjacent letters. But instead of using the normal English language, the guys can only use words in the fictional language of "Klingon" (hence, "Klingon Boggle").

Howard: It's a Stephen Hawking lecture from MIT in 1974.

Howard is referring to Stephen William Hawking, a British theoretical physicist born January 8th, 1942. Hawking is known mostly for his work and experiments with black holes, theoretical cosmology and quantum gravity. His book, "A Brief History of Time", is one of the most popular books that exist, and it stayed on the list of best-sellers for a record-breaking 237 weeks.

Visual: Rajesh can't talk to Penny (because she is a woman).

What Rajesh is experiencing throughout the show is a medical disorder called "Selective Mutism", which is a fear of speaking to women.

Sheldon: I have a sister with the same basic DNA mix who hostesses at Fuddruckers.

Fuddruckers is an American casual, franchised, fast-food restaurant chain that specializes in hamburgers. It was founded in 1980 in San Antonio by Philip J. Romano, but was purchased by Michael Cannon in 1998 and is now based in Austin, Texas. Fuddruckers have over 260 locations world-wide, and most of the restaurants have a 1950s and 1960s rock-and-roll theme.

Penny: I’m a waitress at The Cheesecake Factory.

The Cheesecake Factory is a restaurant company in the United States that currently operates 146 restaurants in 34 US states and the District of Columbia. The company was founded in 1978 in Beverly Hills, California by David M. Overton.
