Laura Linney plays Catherine Jamison, long suffering wife of Paul (Oliver Platt) she has just discovered she has cancer. Throughout four seasons we have seen her took under the care of various Doctors. Following her journey as she continues to be mother to teenage son Adam (Gabriel Basso) and sister to Sean Tolke (John Benjamin Hickey). Along the way we've met her neighbours and friends as she continues her fight, she's lost many people along the way, making her a much stronger character.

4x3: Quality of Death recap: The scene opens 2 months after Cathy lost her memory. Cathy is waking up. She sees a bunch of pictures on the ceiling. Her memory is back and she calls Adam’s name to wake him as well. Adam wakes up and sees he slept past 7:00 and needs to give Cathy her medicine. She says it is fine. Paul comes in and yells at Adam for not being on time with the medication. Cathy reiterates it is fine and not to worry about it. She says it is time to go... read more.

4x2: You Can't Take It With You recap: The scene opens two months later. Cathy is going through her old things and she asks Sean when he is going to shave the beard. He says that it is his neck warmer. She tells him to call her dermatologist and he says that he will think about it. Adam comes downstairs and tells Cathy that he needs to go to school. He says that he is meeting with Lydia, his Chemistry tutor. Cathy finds her old Are Mez scarf and says that it made her feel like Jackie O. Cathy reminds Adam how he always used to rub the silk on his nose. Adam plays it off like he didn’t do that. Paul comes downstairs and asks where his dress shirt is. Sean offers him a blouse and he says that it could work for his radio show. Andrea finds Cathy’s wedding dress and says that she can’t get rid of it. Sean reminds Andrea of when she burned her clothes too. Andrea says that she was erasing a bad memory. Paul asks Cathy if that is what she is doing. 4x1: Quality of Life recap: The episode begins with Cathy snorkeling, when she suddenly experiences some discomfort and is later seen, being rushed to the hospital. Five months later, in September, Cathy watches from the window of her house. Adam, Paul, and Andrea, burying someone’s ashes in the backyard. The ashes are of Thomas, Marlene’s dog. She has a talk with Marlene, who only she can see, about the surgery she underwent for her cancer. After the burial, Adam leaves with Andrea, so he can drop her to her dorm and also get an opportunity to drive. He is soon going to turn 16 and is really excited about getting his license. 3x10: Fly Away recap: The episode begins with Sean getting on the boat after his scuba-diving session. He tells his girl friend that while she watched the fish, he was watching her. He finds her very tempting and comments on her assets. The diving coach comes up to him and asks about his dive buddy. Sean tells him that it is Cathy but she isn’t around for some reason. The coach reminds him the rules: Never leave your buddy; but it appears that Sean broke them. The coach tells Sean that she is the only one not back from the dive. But Sean tells the coach that she is a swim coach and she is doing this only to piss him off. The coach declares that one is missing. Meanwhile, in the waters, Cathy gets entangled in a net. 3x9: Vaya Con Dios recap: The episode begins with Paul, Cathy, Ababoo, Sean and Adam on a vacation in Puerto Rico. Sean tells the gang how America acquired Puerto Rico from Spain. Paul is slated to give a presentation there, and is visibly tensed about it. Paul then sees a memorial for Joy there, and realizes that the people, who are there, don’t want to see him, they are actually there for Joy, and hence he is simply their second choice. It also turns out; Paul goes by the name Pablo in Puerto Rico, Cathy ridicules him for this. Later in their room Paul asks Cathy where she goes nowadays, and why she is never home.
