The Bob Newhart Show (1972)
On the show, Dr. Hartley is a psychologist, not a psychiatrist. Bob Newhart did not want his patients to have deeply disturbing, serious issues. Most of his patients were just very neurotic and not at all what could be considered 'dangerous'.
| At Bob Newhart's insistence, the Hartleys have no children. Bob did not want to have to contend with what he termed 'dumb dad' situations and scripts, which were common in other sitcoms of the era. Once he was presented with a script where Emily had gotten pregnant. He responded by praising the script and saying that it was hysterically funny. The writers were pleased until Bob told them, "Well, that's good. So who are you going to get to play Bob?"
