Gin Rummy quotes Jules Winfield from Pulp Fiction. Both characters are played by Samuel L. Jackson.
| Judge: For the price of selling four bootleg copies of the movie Soul Plane...
This is a reference to the movie Soul Plane, a movie starring various rappers and Kevin Hart, and how it was extremely bootlegged. Soul Plane was so badly bootlegged, that it was taken out of theaters early because no one went to see it in the theaters. On bootleg, the movie made more money than in theaters.
| Gin Rummy is a spoof of Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld, just like Ed Wuncler III is a spoof of President Bush. Rummy quotes Rumsfeld (the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence) and seems to be named after him (Rummy is one of Rumsfeld's nicknames).
| This episode has many references to the handling of the war in Iraq. The police officer represents the UN, who, threatened by Ed III (taking the place of Bush), is able to see the non-existent weapon. The storekeeper is based on Saddam Hussein.
Also, although the bad guy (Osama) is just up the road (Afghanistan), they feel the need to go get a drink (oil, Iraq). Hence the shootout.
