Layover - Recap

The scene opens with Lt. Flynn talking to a Linda, a woman that he picked up for a date about his work and Lt. Provenza has a date as well, Ashley, another flight attendant. They pull up to Ashley’s house and Lt. Provenza goes into the house. He goes in the bathroom to “freshen up” and takes a Viagra. After taking it, he sees a man in the bathtub. He is dead. He goes out to find Ashley in a teddy and she has pink fuzzy handcuffs. Lt. Provenza asks about the man in the bathtub and she goes to check it out. She screams. The rest of the team enters and Provenza tells that he can’t stand up. Johnson asks why but it is clear with Provenza’s hands at his private area that he can’t stand up. Offended, Johnson walks out and leaves to have Lt. Tao come in and say that he found fingerprints all over the bathroom. Provenza confesses that it was him that put the fingerprints all over the bathroom and said that he did not wash them as to try not to contaminate the scene further. Johnson says that Ryan Wade is missing and that he is the leading suspect.

Examining the body further, Dr. Morales, Sgt. Gabriel, and Johnson identify the man was not killed by someone who was not strong. There was bruising but the fall caused the man to slip and break his neck. Gabriel tells Johnson that the man is Jose Coto and that he is part of an upcoming drug ring. The two girls, Ashley and Linda are escorted in the station and Johnson wants to know how a drug runner winds up dead in a stewardess’s apartment. Sanchez corrects her and says that they are called “flight attendants” now. They found Ryan’s cell phone but there were no incoming calls. Johnson wants to have the dogs sniff out drugs in Ashley’s apartment and asks about the criminal record of Ryan. He tells that he has no criminal record or financial problems. Johnson asks about the girls and Gabriel is a little distracted but tells that they have no criminal record either. Johnson enters the interview room and finds Lt. Flynn and Provenza chatting it up with Ashley and Linda and starts to question them about Ryan. Ashley tells that she was being nice so that Ryan didn’t have to stay in a trailer.

Johnson and the team investigate the trailer and find out from the lat security that everyone chooses to stay there. They approach Ryan’s trailer and find Ryan’s body. He was shot in the head. Johnson meets up with Poe and sees Commander Taylor complaining about his cubicle instead of his own office. She walks in and asks for some help from narcotics and he tells that he can’t spare anyone. She tells that she has a new case and it involves Lt. Flynn and Provenza. Right away Poe is not happy. She tells that there are two dead bodies and missing drugs and the only suspects to the case were with Flynn and Provenza during the time of the first murder. Poe is upset because he has to report it to the press and that it looks bad on him. She comes clean that she was “drafted” to apply for Chief of Police. He tells that he needs a day to think about the news. He tells that her request for Narcotics officers is denied.

Johnson meets with her team and they tell that the drug dogs went crazy at the apartment but no drugs. Lt. Tao tells that he ran the flight records and Ashley flew with Ryan 90 times. Johnson sees that there are holes to the story that Ashley told of hardly knowing her roommate. Lt. Provenza comes up and starts to defend Ashley and Flynn tells that Feds had a flag on Jose Coto and that an “agent” wants to talk to her. She looks over to see Agent Fritz in her office. Provenza tries to defend Ashley and Linda again and asks Flynn to back him up. But Flynn does the exact opposite and tells that he agrees with Johnson with everything. Johnson tells that the girls were just using the two. The other detectives laugh and Lt. Provenza tells that Ashley and Linda are crazy about them. He passes by and sees his picture as one of the suspects. Miguel Diaz is the leader. He tells that Jose was a driver and that they can work together to solve both their cases. He tells that he needs to wheedle himself into her investigation and kisses her. He asks her to wait a day and she tells that she has a better idea.

Lt. Provenza and Flynn give the girls lunch and Johnson tells them to get out. She tells Ashley that there were drugs in her apartment. She tells that Ryan killed the man in the bathtub and Ashley tells that she has been suspicious that Ryan was a drug mule. She tells that he is a good cook and other good qualities. Johnson tells that Ryan is dead and shows a picture of Miguel Diaz and they tell that never seen him. Johnson tells that they are free to go and looks in the camera and tells that Lt. Flynn and Provenza can escort them out. Johnson leaves and Provenza asks if she is going to allow them to go unprotected. She tells that they are going to invite them to their home and watch them. Buzz tells that he will wire their place. Johnson tells that this is a chance to get to know if the girls were just using them.

At the apartment, they have Chinese take-out and Ashley asks if they would go easy on her if he knew if she smuggled something off the plane. They zoom in and she pulls out a mini-wine from the airplane. Ashley asks what is wrong with Johnson and that she means differently whenever she says “Thank you” and that she really means that whoever she says that to can stick it. In the van, Johnson is getting a little offended and Fritz tells her not to get offended. She hides it though. She calls Flynn and reminds that they are watching and all of it could be played in court. They make themselves comfortable and Linda asks if they could talk and not to care. Linda tells that they knew Jose Coto and tells that a few years ago, they started running drugs for them and it was only once a month and then moved up to every LA Flight connected to Honduras. Jose would come and give them money. But every time, the money got smaller and smaller. So they decided to hold on to the drugs and had Ryan hold on to them until Ashley got the word from a contact she made. But things got rough for Ryan while they were at dinner. Fritz tells that every flight connected to Honduras was ran by Captain Mark Wheeler.

Fritz and Johnson talk with Captain Wheeler and he asks if he is arrested and Johnson tells that they only have a few questions. He tells that he spoke with Ryan and that he was talking about a guy dead and that there are a lot of drugs. He tells that Ryan told that he sold the drugs and that he left Ryan in his trailer. Johnson tells that Ryan was shot to death. Fritz asks if anyone had a key to the trailer. He tells that Ashley has a key as well. Gabriel tells that Ashley has a car and that Ryan probably took Ashley’s car. Johnson asks to see Captain Wheeler’s belongings and finds some keys with a cow on it. Back at the apartment, Ashley and Linda tell that they never asked about the car. Lt. Provenza asks for the honest answer about whether or not they were attracted to them. They tell that they were not. Lt. Flynn calls Johnson and she tells them to arrest the girls and bring them to the station. Provenza is unhappy and Flynn tells that the girls are not the only girls in the world.

None of the keys on the keychain match the trailer. Johnson enters and takes out the belongings. He tells that the keys are not his and that they belong to Ashley. He tells that he borrowed the car and Wheeler tells that he took the car from Ryan and tries to. He tells that he left the key outside the door for Miguel Diaz. He told Miguel that he didn’t know where the drugs are and that he would look for them. Fritz tells that Wheeler is going to call Miguel and tell that he knows where the drugs are. Flynn and Provenza are still waiting for the girls to get ready and Provenza tells that they can’t look any more stupid. They hear the garage door open and see that the girls stole Provenza’s car and are headed to the personnel parking at the airport. He grabs the phone and he tells that he is calling a cab and not the chief. At the airport, Sanchez is in position with the sniper rifle and Diaz and his men arrive. Wheeler gets out and walks up to Ashley’s car. Miguel Diaz and another walks out and Wheeler takes out the drugs. But Ashley and Linda are in a cargo cart and upon seeing Miguel, they tell the driver to get away. Lt. Provenza and Flynn exit out of the cab and run after the girls and Provenza calls them a bad name. The girls get arrested and Johnson rubs it in their faces. Fritz is happy that they got to work together and close two cases in one day and Johnson is happy to have spent time with her husband. Commander Taylor has gotten used to his cubicle. Pope says congratulations to Johnson and tells that she should submit her application and tells that she is the perfect candidate for it and tells that no one will hire her as Chief of Police and that she couldn’t even control her officers. Meanwhile, Flynn and Provenza are trying to find Provenza’s car at the airport and they argue on who picked up the girls in the first place.
