The scene opens with Provenza getting off the phone with someone. He tells Flynn to meet him in another room. He asks him if he wants to make $2,000 by taking up a job as a server to a civil law suit. He says that they have a cell phone number and that all they have to track it. However, Flynn tells that he doesn’t know how to track someone by a cell phone. Buzz comes in and Provenza pitches the idea to him and says that they are going to be able to make a little extra money on the side. Later, thanks to Buzz’s technology, they find the location of Steven Hershbown. Provenza says that the name seems familiar. They get there and Buzz doesn’t realize that his taillight is broken. They get to room 715 and serve Steven his court paperwork. However, he says that they have the wrong man and that he is scared for his life. The detectives laugh it off and exit the building. When they get out, they see the damage on Buzz’s car, but Provenza says that he shouldn’t worry about that. Suddenly, Steven’s body falls on Buzz’s car. They look at him and realize that he has been shot. Provenza says that they don’t need to bother Chief Johnson and tell to call Gabriel.

Everyone gets on scene and Provenza makes up a story that they don’t know the guy. Sanchez catches the picture of Provenza and Steven posing. Fritz tells that Johnson should be alerted to this because Steven was a man who was being investigated by the FBI for a Federal Fraud trial. Provenza goes up to Fritz and asks what they can do to keep it between themselves, but Fritz goes up to Johnson anyways. Provenza tries to explain, but she doesn’t want to hear it. Johnson tells Gabriel to interview the hotel residents. Johnson asks Flynn and Provenza what they were doing. Provenza shows a Permission for Outside Employment form and asks for her to sign it. He says that a lawyer named Doyle, the same lawyer suing Steven to begin with, called them and told that they needed to serve paperwork to him. They tell that they triangulated the signal using the “Catfish” a piece of technology that only Buzz knows how to use. Johnson is even madder at them and rips up their form. Fritz suggests that the killer was led by Flynn and Provenza. Dr. Morales tells that they need to see something. He shows that the man who was murdered wasn’t Hershbown at all. The real identity is Scott Esposito. Flynn and Provenza realize that they served the wrong guy and they don’t even get paid for it too.
Fritz tells that they didn’t realize the switch because it was hard to see. Gabriel tells that Esposito was an actor and Sanchez asks if he said anything odd. Provenza says that he said that it wasn’t him and Buzz tells that he told them that he was scared too. Johnson says that they need to make sure that everyone thinks that Steven is dead so that they don’t have to deal with anything that could make the killer on the hunt still. Johnson and Fritz go into meet Doyle in the interview room and he tells that he is ruined because of the death of Steven. He says that he got the private cell number from Steven’s daughter. Sanchez interrupts and tells that Steven’s family is there. Johnson goes to meet the family and Fritz says that whoever lies in front of the Press is going to hurt their career. Commander Taylor comes up and tells that he is going to alert the press of the death of Steven. Fritz says that he is good with that. Johnson goes into room to find Chief Pope there. He asks who is telling that Steven is dead and they turn to see Commander Taylor telling about the news. He says that he is happy with that.
She and Pope sit down with Steven’s wife, Shannon, and daughter, Andrea. Shannon tells Andrea that she should call her mom, but Andrea says that Shannon sat behind her in 8th grade French. Johnson asks when the last time Shannon saw Steven. She tells that they had an argument and he left. That is all she can say. Johnson says that they know that Andrea gave Doyle the private cell number to Steven. Andrea asks if they can have Steven’s Death Certificate so that they can get things in order. Johnson exits and Lt. Taou comes up and says that they found that Esposito’s phone is active and is still being used. Johnson tells that Flynn and Provenza are suspended for a few days and that since they are not police officers, they can do what they want including that of a “Catfish” device. They leave and go to Buzz. He says that he doesn’t want anything to do with that. However, when Provenza and Flynn tell that they are going to get a big bonus and that it comes from Johnson, he agrees.

They arrive at a house where a limo is parked outside. They tell the driver to get out of there and go up to the place. Provenza asks where the form is and Flynn tells that he thought that Provenza had it. A man answers the door. It is Steven Hershbown. He screams and runs away. Flynn chases him down and they see that the FBI arrived there too. Buzz comes around back and they escape with Steven. They go to a hotel and check into a room. Steven says that he is going to sue them and that they are doing a bad thing. Buzz tells that the hotel has a fax machine. Provenza calls Sanchez to get the form and he says that he is going to have to clear it with Johnson. He goes in to find Fritz talking to Johnson. Fritz says that Steven’s girlfriend is sitting down with a sketch artist to get the identity of the men who took Steven. Sanchez tells that Taylor is on the phone. Johnson picks it up and tells that she needs a private moment. Johnson sees that Taylor is outside of her office and Fritz meets him out there. Johnson closes her blinds and talks to Steven and tells him that she has questions. She asks why he killed Scott Esposito. He says that he didn’t do it, but Shannon probably did it because she knew that he was at the hotel.
Johnson calls in Shannon and Andrea and tells that the man that they found dead wasn’t Steven. They look shocked and Johnson shows a video of Steven and his girlfriend. Shannon asks why he is with her. Andrea says that the woman is Lisa Flemming, their personal trainer. Shannon and Andrea argue and ask where he is. Johnson sees that Buzz’s taillight is broken and calls and asks where they stopped by. Provenza says that they have to go to the lawyer’s office and Flynn tells him to forget the $4,000. Steven tells that he can wire money to an account and all they have to do is leave. They ask how much and he says about $100,000 each. Buzz can’t believe that Flynn and Provenza are actually thinking about it. Back at the station, Fritz comes in and tells that he knows that Provenza and Flynn were the men who kidnapped Steven. She denies it. Later, Provenza and Buzz get to Doyle’s office and tells that he needs another form. Doyle is surprised that Steven is still alive and gives Provenza another subpoena. He goes outside and Buzz says that the lawyer’s office is where his taillight was broken. Provenza tells him to drive slowly. They pull up to the hotel and get to the room. A red car pulls up and parks.

They get inside and tell Steven to count to 60 before leaving. He says that he will wire the money and that they are going to serve him the paper and he is going to act surprised. They serve him the paper and leave. Buzz says that he left the “Catfish” in there and he says that they will get it later. The red car pulls up and a man goes upstairs. It is Doyle. Johnson tells him to drop the gun and he asks surprised. Steven opens the door and see Fritz and the FBI. He screams and tries to escape. Johnson, Provenza and Flynn get in and tell that they have him giving a bribe to a police officer. They get Steven and Doyle to the station and they are upset that Doyle tried to kill him and that Steven tried to mess up his career. Commander Taylor is upset that he could have hurt his career and Pope tells him to relax. Later, they talk to Doyle and he tells that he is broke and Flynn and Provenza realize that they are not getting paid. However, Pope and Fritz walk up to them and tell that there is a reward of $10,000 from the FBI, but say that they can’t collect it because they are police officers. Buzz says that he helped and they give the money to him. Provenza and Flynn try to talk to him and Buzz says that they will get 1/3 and says that is $200 each. The episode ends.
