The spoilers in this post are for the first four episodes of season three.

There has been at least one situation in each of the episodes thus far where the situation was morally ambiguous and/or different members of the squad disagreed about what was right:

3x01 | Homewrecker: Brenda reenacts a suspect's young sister's dying screams to get him to threaten suicide so they can put him on suicide watch instead of releasing him. Gabriel, the only other person in the room, seemed to react negatively to this.

3x02 | Grave Doubts: There is great internal debate within the squad about whether the priest is doing good with his work with (ex?-)gang members. More pointedly, Gabriel confronts Brenda because he believes putting the politician in jail for a decades old crime will do more harm than good.

3x03 | Saving Face: This is less obvious because there was no disagreement, but Pope and Brenda did essentially blackmail the bride and her father into dropping the lawsuit and apologizing to the media with the pre-plastic surgery photos of the bride, and blackmail is generally considered to be at least a morally grey area.

3x04 | Ruby: The most blatant: Gabriel beats a suspect into giving him a location. Buzz and Provenza decide to turn off the video and shoulder the responsibility for the decision with Brenda. Daniels decides to stick up for her boyfriend/co-worker and suggest Brenda take advantage of Taylor's expertise. Taylor helps cover the bruises up by "accidentally" putting the suspect in the general population and making sure the other prisoners know he's in on child molestation charges. Brenda tells Pope about Gabriel and he gets a 10-day suspension, but she tells him not to return until he knows he won't respond in the same way.

So, am I imagining this theme? Am I simply imagining that it began this season? What do you think about one/all of the situations? Are there any more that I missed? What are your thoughts?

Heh. So much for that theory–the squad didn't have any moral crises in the fifth episode.
