Bruce met Johnny while attending to him in the hospital during and after his coma. Upon Johnny's release from the hospital, Bruce follows him and his new found ability. Bruce is a transplant from Indiana–the son of a preacher and a former one himself. Bruce has been trying to find his place in the world and helping Johnny seems to be what he's been searching for.

Life-long minister and friend to Johnny's mother, Purdy is tied closely to Johnny's affairs. It was during his relationship with Johnny's late mother that he became trustee of the Smith estate. Mrs. Smith was very wealthy at the time of her death and this financial windfall to Purdy's ministry "Faith Heritage Alliance" propelled him to national recognition. Johnny has come to accept Purdy as a part of his life but this relationship has often placed both of them in danger.

Life-long love of Johnny, they suffered all the pitfalls of life together. Even during Johnny's coma she sat by his side, but eventually time got the best of her and she started a relationship and later married Walt. Despite these facts, Sarah is still a major part of Johnny's life; they have a son together and she offers emotional stability for Johnny and his newfound responsibility.

Walt is the law in town and has the distinction of being step-father to Johnny's son, not to mention that he's married to Johnny's former love Sara. Despite these facts, the two work well together to help people and each other when needed.
