| Science Fiction with a CSI Twist

Remember the good old days when The X-files was a new show? Sci Fi was rare on TV at the time. All that we had was deep space sci-fi series like Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. Then came the X-files. Sci Fi brought into the real world. It opened up a lot of doors for the genre of Sci Fi. It seems difficult to imagine now a time when good Science Fiction on Television was rare.
The Dresden Files has many parallels to those first X-files episodes. Both series are episodic mysteries with a supernatural twist and both feature a 'believer' and a skeptic in the lead rolls. Both are relative new genre TV, but this time instead of Sci Fi, the genre is fantasy.
Do I believe The Dresden Files could be the next X-files? No actually I do not. I don't believe it is as well written or as well directed, however that doesn't make it a bad show.
The Dresden Files is a fun and original alternative to the endless crime dramas coming out today like carbon copies of each other. Slap the name of a different city and fill it with a different cast and don't even pretend it's original programing. Somehow, despite all the psychic detective stories and X-files wannabes, The Dresden Files proves to be an original alternative.
What it really has going for it is great acting. The main character Harry Dresden has a healthy mixture of compassion and sex appeal. He is intelligent, capable and likable with a dry sense of humor and Paul Blackthorne plays him very well. Also noteworthy is the character Bob, a wisecracking ghost played by the sarcastic Terrence Mann.
Only time will tell if this series has what it takes to survive past the first season. But I, for one, hope that it does.
