A 90-minute special airing on Lifetime, which at the time of airing was the only place the series could be seen in America. Bea Arthur, Betty White, and Rue McClanahan all served as hosts for this episode, with Estelle Getty having been too ill to participate. Featured: interviews with the cast and crew, bloopers and outtakes, and never-before-seen footage from England.
It is mentioned that Estelle Getty retired from acting. In truth, her dementia had worsened severely by this point to the extent she was unable to participate, though she can be seen in clips from the show as Sophia Petrillo. Sadly, Getty passed away in 2008.
When this special premiered, Lifetime followed it with the pilot and two-part series finale back-to-back.
Lifetime re-aired this special on November 12, 2005 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the series.
A new version of the theme song, "Thank You for Being a Friend," was recorded for this special.
Betty White: Well, scoff if you must, but I -- I -- screwed it up!
Betty White: I haven't been this depressed since I was rejected by Uncle Sam.
(no response from the audience)
Rue McClanahan: (laughs) I thought they were going to laugh, and they didn't.
Betty White: They didn't the last time, why should they now? (to audience) You didn't before and you shouldn't again. "I haven't been this depressed since I was rejected by Uncle Sam," ("flashes" the audience) WHOOP!
(audience erupts in hysterical laughter)
Terry Hughes (OS): Settle down, please.
Rue McClanahan: (to audience) Now don't laugh this time, 'cause I'm not waiting.
