Pilot - Recap

Next Episode -->
The scene opens up in Dallas Texas at 11:27 P.M. A man in a mask breaks into a home. The burglar’s cell phone goes off and he tells the other person on the other end that he is just walking into “work”. His name is Julius. Julius sees a television set and complains that it isn’t a flat screen. But his burglary is interrupted when a car pulls into the driveway. Julius is trying to pick up the television set but it is too heavy and he drops it. He runs out and takes the nearest thing, a humidifier. Eight hours later at the Dallas Police department, Detective Jack Bailey talks to Lieutenant Anne Ruiz about his current placement with Detective Dan Stark. Bailey tries to convince his Lieutenant that he is a good cop and starts to complain about a report being completed as he says it “looks like a 3rd grader did it.” It turned out that it was the Lieutenant who did the report. Realizing he overstepped his boundaries, Detective Bailey backpedals and says that he will pick up his partner Stark.

In the next scene we meet the partner that Bailey has a problem with. He is getting himself ready and then steps out of his trailer that is parked next to an amusement park. They head over to their first case, a stolen humidifier. As they are speaking with the owner of the house, she recognizes Detective Stark from saving the governor’s son back in 1985. Realizing that she is “interested”, Stark tells Bailey to round up all the evidence while he “interviews” the victim. Detective Stark comes out of the house in the next scene with his clothes a little askew and Bailey tells that he found fingerprints. In the car Bailey voices his views on what Stark did but Detective Stark says that the case is small now but soon it will be a major crime.

Ironically, as they pass by the South Dallas Value inn, a major crime is in progress. It is a cocaine deal where a overused cocaine runner named Escalante is tired of how his cousin is paying him to run the drugs for him. He decides to take the four million dollars for himself. Escalante goes to the office of Dr. Brad Kalfuss, a cosmetic surgeon, to change his identity. He tells the doctor that he would like to look like Eric Estrada from “Chips”. The surgery doesn’t go well. The doctor decides to stop the criminals and throws his tools at Escalante’s partner. This then bounces off and hit the oxygen tanks. There is an explosion, the doctor is alive, but the other two in the room weren’t so lucky.

The scene cuts to the Office of Assistant D.A. Liz Traynor. Detective Bailey wants to get the lab work on a stolen humidifier and to run the prints that were found. We find out that the Liz and Bailey had a history together when Bailey recommends that she give it to him as an anniversary gift for their relationship that ended a while ago. Bailey is looking to get a conviction on the case so that he can get out of his position with Stark and do something else.

Meanwhile back at the surgeon’s office, Dr. Kalfuss is ditching the bodies of the two cocaine runners in a car and we meet Julius the robber again. This time he has to get rid of the car for the doctor. Julius sees that something is a little odd about this but the Dr. Kalfuss gives him 10K and a golf bag to ditch the car.

Results are back from the crime lab. They find out that the DNA found at the scene belongs to, you guessed it, Julius. At the place of his work, a thrift store, the two detectives are staking out the scene. Bailey says that the computer told Julius has been arrested five other times and Stark knocks technology by saying that he doesn’t trust computers. A mysterious character enters the thrift store before the detectives. Stark is rambling about how things are not what they seem and that it could be a bigger picture. Outside of the thrift store, Bailey tells Stark that he is crazy and that it is only a Thrift store and a humidifier and nothing else. But they are interrupted when gun fire comes out from the Thrift store. Stark wants to know who the mysterious stranger is who entered the thrift store and is now firing at them. Another flashback to sixteen hours earlier we see the Mystery Man in Lima, Peru and find out that is name is Pedro. He is an assassin that works for Don Romero, the boss of the cocaine running. He wants Pedro to find his cousin Escalante and the golf bag. There is a little scene showing Pedro making his way to the United States.

Dr. Kalfuss is going home from his afternoon jog and is surprised when Pedro is already there. The doctor gives up that Julius is the guy that he wants and that he works at the Thrift Store. Pedro enters the thrift store and tells Julius that he wants the golf bag and that it belongs to his employer. Julius grabs a shotgun and things get to where they were before the flashback. Detective Stark shows no fear and is the first to enter the store. Bailey enters after and the detectives enter into a shoot out. Julius takes this as an opportunity and leaves with the golf bag. Pedro follows and Stark jumps on his car demanding that he stop. Stark is thrown off the car in a pile of garbage.

Julius calls the Doctor but we see that Pedro has already gotten to him and has the doctor tied to a table. Julius tells Pedro that is very angry in broken Spanish and he corrects his Spanish before telling him that he is not going to kill Julius and that he just wants the golf bag. Julius tells Pedro to meet him at a strip club to discuss a finder’s fee.

Back at the Department, Lt. Ruiz is going over everything that happened and tells the two detectives that what started off as a stolen property case has turned into attempted Homicide and says that she is going to take it away from them. Stark is upset and he tells Lt. Ruiz that she is still upset of when they blew up the Taco truck together. In the locker room, Bailey questions Stark about the taco truck and Stark tells that he and Lt. Ruiz were partners until she dumped him the first chance she got. In the old days things would be different. Stark tells Bailey, “There are no small crimes just small cops.” He’s got a plan to how they can stay on the case.

In the parking lot outside where Julius lives, Bailey asks what the plan is. Stark starts eating some cottage cheese that he found behind the refrigerator at the station. Entering the crime scene of Julius’s home, Stark starts to stumble around saying that he has nightmares and that he is constantly afraid since the shooting. He stumbles around more and vomits on the crime scene. Disgusted, Lt. Ruiz and the other officers leave and we see that this was the plan all along. Looks like the cottage cheese helped. Bailey is now free to look for some evidence. Outside Bailey tells that he found a piece of paper with a number and a meeting time written on it. They run the number through the computer and arrive at Dr. Kalfuss’s house to more gun fire. Pedro is inside and the two detectives enter. Stark realizes that Pedro is out of bullets and that he has only a few seconds to stop him before he reloads. Pedro throws a knife at Stark and it goes into his chest. Realizing that his partner is hurt, Bailey walks in and open-fires on Pedro. However, not one bullet hits him. He then ducks and reloads as Pedro returns fire. We see that the knife that hit Stark really went into his liquor flask. Running out of the room Bailey sees that Stark is alive but Pedro has escaped.

A frightened Dr. Kalfuss retells what happened to him and upon being told that he is a plastic surgeon, Stark asks if he does anything in the “chest area” for Eileen, the victim of the humidifier as a present. In the next scene, Pedro meets Don Romero at the airport and the best assassin is with him as well. A mile from the strip club Bailey and Stark are talking to each other and Stark sees a mint condition sports car that he wants to buy but Bailey tells him that they need to get to strip club. Stark and Bailey enter and Bailey uses his training. They get Julius and take him to the VIP room. The detectives open the golf bag and find out that there is millions of dollars inside. Julius says that he was paid to dump a car with two dead bodies is Mexico and that they are never coming back.

However, another flashback shows that one day earlier, the trunk of the car that was “dumped” opens and Escalante appears. He wants revenge. Back at the strip club, the Lieutenant enters and tells Bailey that there is a reason that they don’t do things Stark’s way. We find out that Frank, Stark’s old partner had a nervous breakdown after Stark made him jump from a moving vehicle. Ruiz wants Stark off the case but Bailey can stay on. Bailey gets his partner who is “interviewing” a stripper.

Back at the office of Dr. Kalfuss, Eileen enters and is shocked that he is offering her a free boob job as a gift from Stark. But they are interrupted when a deranged Escalante enters and threatens the doctor’s life. The doctor tells that Julius has the golf bag and now the cops have it. He also tells that Eileen is a girlfriend of one of the cops and to take her as a hostage. Bailey breaks the news to his partner and Stark doesn’t take the news good.

Don Romero and the two assassins arrive at their hotel. He tells Pedro that if he doesn’t get his bag tomorrow, then the best assassin is going to kill his two sons. Julius is cooperating with the cops now and has to wear a kitten sweatshirt to hide the bulletproof vest. Stark is the gas station that they were at the night before to buy some liquor. He sees Eileen in the security camera and runs out the door. He is too late. But he sees the car that was there the night before.

Pedro and Don Romero enter the strip club where Julius is at the bar. The cops are listening. Julius gives the bag to Pedro and requests a finder’s fee. Don Romero shoots him in the chest. The cops move in and start to proceed in a shoot out. Don Romero flees to the car outside, but Escalante is driving up. He sees the Don and runs him over. Bailey crawls out after he sees Eileen, but he is stopped by Pedro. He allows Bailey to go and save her and the two assassins stand off with each other. Commentated by Julius, he tells the Lieutenant what is going through their minds. Julius snaps his fingers and Pedro shoots the other assassin. He puts down his guns and says that he just wants to go home. Outside Bailey was too late to stop Escalante but Stark appears in the sports car. They chase Escalante and during the pursuit, Bailey realizes that he is going to kill Eileen unless they do something. Bailey tells that he is going to jump from the moving car. His attempt succeeds and he manages to get Escalante subdued with the help from Eileen.

One week later Liz is talking about the different bills that are going to be paid by the state and that they are lucky to keep their jobs after what had happened. The main crook, Julius is allowed to go free and Pedro because of how they did their business. However, when Bailey is leaving, Liz tells him that it was good work that he and his partner did. Will there be a future for Liz and Bailey? Outside Stark hands Bailey a letter. It is from Pedro letting him know that they did a good job. Now with a new sports car, the detectives go and do what they do best, catch some punks.
