The Whistleblower - Recap

The scene opens in West Dallas at Lt. Ruiz’s place. She gets out of the shower and sees a man outside. The scene flash-forwards to 11 hours and Dan says that she is going to be relieved of duties and says that he is going to make it his personal mission. They go to her place and Dan goes through the scenario and Ruiz says that she was exhausted and couldn’t identify the Peeping Tom because she just got back from Yoga class. Dan and Jack go to the Yoga class and Dan gives a speech about a pervert being loose and that they need to watch out. He gives them safety whistles and tells them to be safe. Jack pulls Dan aside and says that he is too close to the case and that he should settle down. Dan says that is when cops do the best police work. Meanwhile at Drayton Oil Headquarters, office of the lead counsel, three men talk about a “Blackbird File” and they agree that they are going to sell it to the highest bidder.



Samantha shows Jack that she did some research and traced the sexual predators in the neighborhood and that she likes his tie. He ignores it and thanks her for her research. Liz comes up and says that Kyle is joining them for dinner and Jack bails and says that he has a night of “sexual deviancy”, referring to what Samantha said about the sexual predators. Later that night, Dan is in the neighborhood scoping out homes when he sees a woman in a leather outfit in a window. He becomes the peeping Tom and sees the woman shoot a guy in the head. Dan announces his presence and she runs off. Dan calls Jack and says that they have a murder case. They find Theo, one of the three men in the scheme, dead at his home. A man calls Theo’s phone and Dan tries to imitate his voice, but the other man picks up on it and calls the lead counsel on it. He tells him not to panic and that he will sell the file soon. The man walks into Liz’s office and the man who is leading the scheme is Kyle, Liz’s boyfriend. He says that they need to go on vacation and Liz says that she has too much to do, but Kyle convinces her to go.

Ruiz gets out of the house and Dan is parked outside her home with his motor home. He gives her a safety whistle to blow if she has someone who is harassing her. She blows it in Dan’s face and he gets the picture. Jack is at the office trying to know who made the call to Theo’s phone and Samantha comes up and says that there is an easier way to do that. She hands him the call details and says that she was working on another case and she knows the phone company’s passwords. Jack tells Dan that Samantha got an address for Scott Wallace. Killer Jane is at Scott’s house and she is setting it up like a suicide. She gets a call and the voice says that he hired a corporate cleaner and that she is sloppy. She says it is not going to happen again. Suddenly Dan and Jack arrive and she hides. They find Scott and Dan says that he is dead. Scott comes to and says “Drayton Oil” and “Blackbird”. He goes unconscious and Jack calls the ambulance. Killer Jane is under the bed hiding. Back at the station, Samantha draws a sketch of Killer Jane based on Dan’s description and he asks her to draw her in a nurse’s outfit. Ruiz asks what they found out and Jack says that there is something about the “Blackbird” file. Ruiz says that they need to learn more of Patrick Drayton before they make their move. They need someone on the inside and Jack knows the guy to do it.



Kyle is looking at the brochure of his vacation and calls the IT department and asks for Theo. The co-worker says that Theo was murdered. Kyle gets scared and calls his secretary to get Scott. She says that he tried to commit suicide and is in a coma. Kyle tells her to clear his schedule, but she says that two police officers are waiting. Kyle goes out to the lobby and Jack asks if he knows anything of a “Blackbird” file and Kyle lies and says that he does not. Kyle is suspicious and tells them to wait in his office and he runs off. Meanwhile, Patrick Drayton is playing golf and Killer Jane is with him. He says that he paid for a corporate cleaner and she has been leaving a trail. He says that she needs to kill the CEO of his competitor. Back at Kyle’s office, Jack says that Kyle is suspicious and Jack asks the secretary where Kyle is and she says that he left for the day. Meanwhile, Kyle is waiting at the deal site and calls the CEO of Drayton Oil’s competitor and says that he has the file. He says that he is sending his “associate”, who happens to be Killer Jane, and he tells him to get there.

Jack and Dan arrive at Kyle’s house and Dan tells Jack he is too invested and Jack says that he is going to do police work and kicks in the door. They get inside and Jack loses it when he finds out that Liz has moved into Kyle’s place. He finds a pig corkscrew that he gave to Liz named “Corky” and gets even madder. Dan tells him to calm down and that they need to go check out Patrick Drayton. Jack says that Dan is going to see Patrick and he is going to check Kyle’s computer. Dan warns Jack of any pictures that he might find with Liz and Kyle having sex. He says that he can handle it and reminds Dan of his own inappropriate case with Ruiz. He says that he has that covered. This means that Julius is there guarding the house and Ruiz says that she doesn’t need it. Liz goes to Kyle’s and calls Jack when she sees the door kicked in. She walks in and sees that Jack is inside and Jack says that he is investigating a murder and Kyle is a suspect. Liz gets upset with him and he says that Kyle ran when Jack saw him. Liz says that Jack is jealous and calls Kyle. In his car, Kyle answers the phone and says that he is about to have a meeting. She says that there is a blonde woman that is going to kill him. He sees the woman and rams her car and takes off. Liz says that Kyle is on his way home.

At the country club, Dan meets with Patrick Drayton and Patrick tells him that he can talk to his lawyer. He shows the picture of Killer Jane and Patrick says that he has never seen her. Dan asks if he knows anything of a “Blackbird File” and Patrick drops his golf balls. Dan takes that as a yes and security comes to get Dan and Patrick says that he will be hearing from his lawyer. Patrick calls Killer Jane and tells her that she is fired. He says that he will do it himself and that she is never going to get another “cleaner” job. Back at Kyle’s place, Liz says that Kyle is innocent and Jack says that if he was, he would get home. Suddenly Kyle runs in and tells Jack that he needs help. He says that he is blowing the whistle on his company. He says that he tried to take it to the authorities and that Drayton Oil got to him first. Liz tells Jack that Kyle needs police protection and Jack agrees to take him. Later that evening, Ruiz is outside with Julius and they are eating the steaks that Julius cooked. She says that he can break into her home anytime since he is a good cook. Julius goes to use her bathroom when the Peeping Tom appears. Julius screams like a girl and Ruiz hits the guy and it is one of the men from her Yoga class.

At the station, Dan feels bad that he wasn’t there and Ruiz says that it’s nothing. Ruiz says that Dan needs to help Jack with the “Blackbird File” case. Jack and Kyle are driving to Kyle’s ranch to get the file and Jack says that he has been avoiding meeting Kyle. Kyle says that he has been dreading to meet Jack too. Dan asks where Jack is and Samantha says that he went with Kyle to his ranch. Samantha also says that Scott Wallace is dead. The scene flashbacks to two hours earlier and Patrick Drayton kills Scott. Dan asks if Jack took backup and he did not. Jack and Kyle arrive at the ranch and Kyle gloats about his success. Kyle goes to the safe and tells Jack to go away for a second. Jack gets a call from Dan and Jack says that he is fine. Suddenly, Patrick Drayton comes in the house and shoots Kyle in the arm. Jack tells him to drop the gun and Kyle says that they need to kill Jack and they get to keep everything, but Killer Jane is there too and tells them both to drop their guns. The scene flashbacks to 36 seconds earlier and Dan arrives on scene and blows the whistle. This distracts Killer Jane and Jack fights her. Patrick Drayton runs and Dan throws a club and hits him in the back. Jack asks for Kyle’s help but he crawls off. Jack stabs Killer Jane in the foot with Corky. They got the killer and the file and find Kyle in the pantry.



Back at the station, Kyle lies about the story and Dan wants to punch Kyle. Jack is in the break room and Kyle gloats more of the fact that he still has Liz and that Jack doesn’t. Jack punches him in the face and walks away. Later, Ruiz, Julius, Samantha, Dan and Jack are barbequing and they talk about how Ruiz took down the Peeping Tom. Liz shows up and says that Kyle said that Jack was hiding in a closet and Liz says that she knew that he was lying and says that she broke up with him. Jack says that he is not sorry to hear that. He shows that he has Corky and opens the beer for Liz. They all laugh and have a good time.
