Carrie and Doug were happy. Doug had just gotten the perfect basement, it had a big screen TV, a fooseball table, everything he could ever want. But when Carrie's father accidentally burns his house down with his "lucky" hot plate, he has to move in with them, and Doug loses his basement.
Doug sees and old picture of Carrie's mother. She was young, hot, and skinny, just like Carrie. But then he sees another with her bigger than him. Afraid this might happen to Carrie he tries to trick her into dieting with him.

Doug and Carrie are talking to a salesman when he uses a word they do not know. Carrie is bothered by this and decides it is time for them to try to become smarter, and they sign up for a reading class together which ends up being more than Doug can handle.
Doug gets caught helping Ray Barone with a driving test and loses his license for a week. Ray tries to make it up to Doug and Doug ends up losing it longer when he is caught driving Ray's car by Ray's brother Robert, a cop.
Carrie plans on making a simple thanksgiving dinner, but Arthur guilts her into making a big dinner like her mother used to.
Doug's car breaks down and he has to buy a new one, but he can't afford it.
Carrie fixes Spence up with a friend from work.
Doug and Carrie go to a wedding of an old male friend of Carrie's. But Doug finds that she had sex with him and when Deacon says that he would be upset about it too to his wife, he finds out he had her too.
The neighbors have a dog that won't stop barking and Carrie says she will go take care of it. Doug goes instead, after convincing Carrie he can be mean too, but later he finds out he is walking their dog at night to keep him from barking.
Carrie's thirtieth birthday comes and she doesn't like getting older.
Doug plans the perfect Valentines day, but first he has to take Spence out for a beer with his friends, because his birthday is on Valentines day. Spence's mom is secretly planning a suprise party, and ropes Doug, Deacon, and Richie into staying. When Spence gets there he storms off because his mom embarasses him, and the guys have to stay because Spence's mom guilts them into it.
Carrie gets a speeding ticket and Doug wants Carrie to go out with the cop to make the ticket disappear.
Doug's supervisor is in the hospital and Doug is temporarliy promoted to his position. Doug ends up hating working behind a desk and misses his truck. But the supervisor dies and Doug is stuck.
Ray Barone calls and asks Doug if he wants to go golfing at his private club, but Doug already has plans with Richie. Doug cancels and tells Richie to come back later and they will watch TV, but when a storm comes and Doug and Ray are stuck in the clubhouse, Doug wonders if he can make it in time.
Doug has a hot woman as a trainee and he is upset that this is not making Carrie jelous. Arthur has to find a way to change the date of death on his pre-purchased tombstone so the first numbers are 20 and not 19
Doug goes to a cocktail party Carrie's boss is having, but to get there he has to skip eating that day. When Doug gets to the party, he finds out there is no food.
Doug and Carrie have always hated their neighbors, the Sackskys. When the Sackskys offer Doug and Carrie their time share in the Hamptons because they are having marital problems, Doug and Carrie decide they have to be nice until they get the keys.
Arthur is always getting in the way of Doug and Carrie's fun so they decide to try to pawn him off on somebody for a weekend. After they can't get anyone else to do it, Doug calls his cousin Danny who he hates and gets Arthur to work at his pizza place and stay with Danny for a weekend, but then Danny wants to hang out with Doug more.
Arthur almost gets Doug fired, so Doug yells at him, and Arthur moves out of the house. Arthur ends up living in a great apartment that he could never afford, and Carrie has to convince him to move back.
Doug and Carrie are thinking of having a baby.
Doug gets a motorcycle, which causes a fight. Doug sells the motorcycle and tells Carrie he sold it because of her, but really he decided he hates it, and Carrie feels guilty.
Carrie doesn't have many friends, so Doug finds her one, but then Carrie starts spending too much time with her.
Doug is goofing off at work, and ends up with a staple in his "area". He has to suffer through the pain while at a meeting with a banker because of an arguement with Carrie.
Deacon and Kelly ask Doug and Carrie to become godparents.
Carrie leaves the garage door open and Doug's TV gets stollen.
Doug calls Arthur a demented old circus monkey and Arthur overhears it. Later Carrie is doing an impression of him and he walks in on that. To make up for it Doug decides to bring Arthur to a Mets game he won tickets for after being named employee of the month. While trying to make Arthur happy both Carrie and Doug wind up in jail.
Doug, Carrie, Deacon, and Kelly go on a vacation together. While at the hotel, Doug and Carrie find out that Deacon and Kelly have a more active sex life than them.
Doug and Carrie invite Ray and Debra Barone over for dinner. When the TV starts having reception problems Doug goes to fix and and gets stuck in the attic.
A waitress at Cooper's asks about Doug's situation, and Doug decides he should start dressing better.
Carrie's friend and her husband are over for dinner and Carrie invites them to spend Thanksgiving weekend with them. Doug hates her husband, so he convinces Spence to move out and stay with them so Carrie's friends can't.
Doug's bowling team sponsor is threatening to stop paying if they don't start winning. The only bad player on the team is Carrie, so Doug has to decide if he will replace her to win.
Doug gets a $3000 dollar christmas bonus and Carrie wants to invest it in the stock market. Doug can't handle it and keeps getting nervous when it falls.
Carrie tries to convince Doug to be the best man at Danny's wedding.
Doug invites his old football teammates over so they can talk to a reporter about their team. Doug made a championship winning play, but people on the team think another player made it, so Doug tries to prove them wrong.
Cold weather comes and Arthur has to move upstairs. When the weather warms up he stays upstairs, and Doug and Carrie want him back in the basement.
Doug catches Carrie cheating at board games, so he tries to find what is making her cheat.
Doug and Carrie think back to the first time they met. Doug was working as a bouncer at a club and Richie convinced Carrie and her friend to go out with them. Carrie was Richie's date, but she hated him, and Doug's date liked Richie.
Doug and Carrie meet a new couple to be friends with. When their schedules get messed up, they invite Deacon and Kelly over at the same time. Then they start to worry that Deacon and Kelly are stealing their friends.
Doug has to take Arthur out of the house so Carrie can set up for his suprise party for his 75th birthday. While at a restaurant, Doug loses Arthur.
Deacon and Doug go to Atlantic City and Doug loses a lot of money, while Deacon makes a lot. Deacon used money that he was holding for Doug to win the money, so Doug wants some of it.
When Doug finds out that Deacon is a big brother for a kid, Doug signs up to be one too. But when he gets the kid, he decides he doesn't like him.
Tim Sacksky convinces Doug to join his water filter selling business. It turns out to be nothing more than a pyramid scheme and Carrie wants Doug to go get his money back, but Doug still thinks he can make money.
Doug takes Carrie to an italian restaurant he found, but Carrie thinks the waiter was rude to her and forbids Doug to go again. Doug loves the restaurant, so he decides to sneak behind her back.
Doug shows Carrie he can still be romantic, and Arthur get jury duty.

Doug does an imitation of Rico, a person he works with to get Carrie to have sex with him. But then when Carrie wants him to do the voice again, Doug worries she doesn't want him anymore.

Doug lies to Carrie about having to work late so that he can play mud football with his friends. Doug gets sick and then Arthur makes him feel even worse for lying to Carrie.
Doug feels sorry for Arthur and lets him go to a bar instead of a dance at his senior center. When Carrie finds out she gives Doug full control of Arthur, and Doug realizes how hard it is to deal with him.
Doug finds out people at FedEx might be interestted in him so he uses that to try to get his boss to give him more money. Carrie gets addicted to tanning cream after she agrees to put it on Lou while his wife is out of town.
Doug and Carrie go to a movie with Kelly while Deacon watches the kids. While at the movies, Carrie finds a co-worker who likes Kelly. Kelly decides to go on a date with him, and Deacon asks Doug to help him win his wife back.
Doug and Carrie go to visit Doug's parents at the airport while they are waiting for their flight. Doug's parents give Doug a living will to sign, but Doug is upset that they marked "do not recisitate" on everything.
After a storm destroys their fence, Doug and Carrie's neighbors come over to try to convince them to let the fence stay down, so they can have a combined backyard. When Carrie doesn't like the idea, she rushes to build a new fence, which offends their neighbors. Then the Sackskys build a pool that overlooks their yard, and Carrie wants to sue.
Doug's uncle Stu asks him to get Danny a job at IPS and Doug doesn't want Danny working there. He gets Danny the interview but convinces Supervisor O'Boyle to not hire him. Then Doug feels guilty about it.
Carrie starts to worry that she might be pregnant and it couldn't happen at a worse time. When Arthur finds out he tries to convince her to tell Doug and when she won't, he brings Doug to her.
Doug tells Carrie not to worry about the baby and he takes a second job to help store up money. When Carrie sees it is too much for Doug she decides she wants to help. In the end she loses the baby.
Doug and Carrie decide they want to have a baby, but Arthur keeps getting in the way. Now that his last friend moved away he has nothing to do all day, so he bugs them at night. Doug decides to hire a dog walker to walk Arthur so he can spend time with Carrie.
Doug realizes that Carrie has hated every gift he has given her. When she starts having to wear glasses again because her vision is going, he decides to get her laser eye surgery. But the problems come when Carrie ends up blind.
Doug is close to beating the record for most perfect delivery days. As he nears the 951 day record the people he works with start to get jealous.
Doug and Carrie get in a fender bender with Deacon and Kelly, and the agreement for Doug and Carrie to pay for the damages to Deacon and Kelly's car causes problems between the two couples. Meanwhile, Spence babysits Deacon and Kelly's son, Kirby, who, not understanding what "allergic" means, believes Spence to be afraid of peanuts and stops calling him the "Spencinator," referring to him as the "Scaredinator" instead.
Carrie and Doug go to her company's retreat, and Carrie, hoping to impress the firm's partners, encourages Doug to be friendly with them, which Doug finds difficult. Meanwhile, Arthur is left at home alone, and Deacon has been instructed to check up on him.
Arthur forbids Halloween to be celebrated in the house, and Doug, fed up with Arthur's demands, defiantly decorates the house with Halloween decorations, which scares Arthur into the hospital. Once Doug finds out why Arthur hates Halloween, he attempts to find a way to make his father-in-law feel better, which is more difficult than he initially thought. Meanwhile, Deacon is concerned with his son's choice of Halloween costume.
As Arthur is about to have his surgery he asks Carrie to bring him his sleep mask. When she is digging through his stuff looking for it she finds an old letter from Florida State saying she got into college. She never saw the letter before and starts to resent her father.
After the surgery, Carrie decides it would be a good idea to get life insurance and to make sure Arthur has somewhere to go if one of them dies. When she finds out Doug wouldn't want him if she dies she gets upset. She starts smoking again and Doug thinks she is trying to die first.
When Carrie is cleaning out the freezer she finds part of their wedding cake and Doug and Carrie reflect back to their wedding day.
When Doug's first instinct is to use an oxygen mask - released accidentally during a plane landing - for himself instead of allowing Carrie to use it, she is upset, and he tries to prove that he would be willing to risk his life to save her. Spence looks for a new place to live when his rent is raised again and is surprised when Danny doesn't want to live with him.
Carrie's boss gets his first big case and he needs an expert witness from IPS. When he asks Carrie to get her husband, she is worried he might embarass her so she goes back and forth having Deacon and Doug come.
Doug's parents come over for christmas. Carrie is ovulating and they want to use this time to get pregnant, but Doug's parents are getting in the way.
Carrie gets jelous when Doug starts paying a lot of attention to Spence's girlfriend Becky. She is a great cook and Doug is always talking about her food. Carrie tries to impress Doug with her cooking, but can't do it.
Carrie wants to spend a weekend with Doug to honor their first date, but it is the same day as a trip Deacon planned to Atlantic City with a group of friends. Carrie agrees to go but the only other person who shows up is Doug's boss. Deacon shows up later and says Kelly left him and took the kids.
Doug decides to take Deacon out to find women after Kelly left him. When he gets to the club he realizes how much he misses them and starts going even when Deacon doesn't come.
Carrie finds an unopened gravy boat that they got from Doug's third cousin Ron and his wife Marcia at their wedding. It has a check for $1500 in it but it is too old to cash. When they invite them over and get a new check, Doug says how they were thinking of going to New Orleans, and Ron and Martia want to go to. But Doug hates them and they go without Ron and Martia, but Doug can't relax knowing they are doing this.
Arthur decides he wants to create a comic strip for Playboy magazine and hires Spence to draw it for him.
Doug and Carrie get tickets to the annual golf outing Carrie's law firm has. They normally take Deacon and Kelly, but they can't. So Doug finds Deacon a new girl, but Carrie hates her.
Doug's uncle offers to fund a sandwhich shop for Doug which has always been his dream. Carrie thinks it is a bad idea and has to find a way to stop Doug.
Carrie is out of town and Doug's parents are over. Doug has to take a test for IPS to make sure he is a safe driver and decides not to study, but he fails and soon his mother starts running his life. Arthur creates the Arthur's head screwdriver to try to get rich after a conversation with Doug's father.
Carrie has started going out for drinks after work with her friends and is coming home nicer than usual. When she gets in a fight with them, Doug realizes it is over, so he starts giving her alcohol at home to make her happier.
Carrie has started wearing her hair in a bun, which is driving Doug crazy. His high school reunion is coming up and he wants her to go back to her old look so she doesn't look like a librarian.
Carrie and Doug realize they havn't been very charitable in their life so they give money to Deacon's son's school. When they are credited as giving less than they gave, they wonder if they should speak up.
Doug takes $100 from the emergency fund jar to bet on boxing, and wins $5000 with Deacon. But they realize they can't tell anybody or Carrie will know he took the money, and Kelly will try to get the money in the divource. They decide the best thing to do is blow all the money on the best day ever.
Doug visits a dentist who used to like Carrie, and Doug thinks that he is hurting him on purpose for getting Carrie. Arthur owes Deacon some money so he decides to teach Kirby to play piano, even though he has no idea how.
Arthur goes to visit a psychiatrist and they discover what may have caused Arthur's unique personality.
Carrie has to work the nightshift at her lawfirm with a group of morons. Doug doesn't get to see her anymore, so he starts spending time with Arthur.
A new couple moves in next to Doug and Carrie, and Carrie worries that they made a bad first impression when she realizes that they heard them fighting. So she decides to invite them over to dinner.
Doug and Carrie run into Father McAndrew at a fish store. He says he would like to see them in church sometime, and Doug says they will go. While praying in church, Carrie prays for her promotion and gets it. Then she starts praying for everything, such as discounts on shoes. Doug is against it at first, but then prays for football. Arthur is also having an open house while they are gone to see if somebody will buy the house for a lot of money.
Deacon asks Doug to help coach his son's football team, and Doug ends up being dared to try out for a semi-pro team.
Carrie agrees to babysit for Mr. Kaplan in hopes of getting on his good side. Mr. Kaplan's son can't stop grabbing Carrie. Doug tries to make a worker at a bowling alley feel good by talking to her, and she thinks he is stalking her.
Doug goes to Carrie's office and meets her "work husband". He gets jelous of how close the two of them are, even though Curt is gay. Carrie says Curt is just like Deacon is to Doug and then Doug and Carrie compete to see who can spend more time with their "work spouse".
Doug's mother comes to visit, and Doug runs into an old girlfriend, Margy. Carrie gets jelous when Doug's mother starts spending time with Margy, and Doug tries to prove to Margy he wrote a song about her back in highschool.
Doug gets bored at a wedding and decideds to take a picture of his "area" with a disposable camera. When the bride and groom see the picture they think it was Danny, and they have a big fight, which makes Doug feel guilty.
Carrie wins four free company seats to Knicks games and decides to invite her friend and her husband to go with her and Doug. When Doug hates her husband, Carrie agrees to invite Eddie and his girlfriend, who she ends up hating. They decide they need to break the two groups up and create a new couple to do things with.
Doug agrees to let Deacon borrow Carrie to make Thanksgiving dinner for his family. But when Deacon decides Holly is a better cook things start to get ugly.
Carrie is trying to get her dad the perfect gift for christmas. Doug wants to buy a toy that is a collector's item for himself and Deacon wants it too.
Carrie thinks that Doug should go to therapy to find what is making him overeat. When it starts to work, Carrie starts telling the therapist specific things she wants him to change.
Doug becomes obsessed with throwing a great Super Bowl party when he finds out most of his friends are going to another party. Carrie doesn't think that Doug thinks about her enough during the day, and Doug has to prove he thinks about her, while trying to throw the best party.
Doug and Carrie accidently get the pictures of a couple called the Hofferman's. They see that the couple is doing things such as scuba diving and mountain climbing, so Carrie decides that her and Doug should start being more active.
It's Valentine's Day and Doug has to deliver penguins to a zoo together with Deacon. Meanwhile, Carrie and Hollie are trying to get a date for Hollie and even Arthur and Spence are looking out for love.
Doug and Carrie get an offer from their friends to go to the Caribbean with them. Meanwhile, Arthur discovers that the basement has a mold problem.
Doug and Carrie have to get $12000 together to get rid of the mold problem in the basement. They try to get the loan from Doug's father. Arthur wants to help them out as well and tries to get the money from Spence's mom.
To get rid of the mold in their house, Doug and Carrie hire a group of Russians to remove the mold from their house.
Doug and Carrie try to improve their relationship after a fight. Doug promises to stop lying to Carrie, while she tries to be nicer to Doug and stop threatening him with death every time she's mad at him.
Danny wants Doug to write him a letter of recommendation so he can become a driver at IPS. Carrie writes it for him and has Doug sign it, but trouble comes when Doug might just lose his job to Danny, when it turns out Danny is a better driver.
Doug and Carrie buy presents. Doug gets himself a harmonica and Carrie buys herself an expensive leather jacket. Doug is shocked and he wants Carrie to take the jacket back to the store. But when she finds out that she could have kept the clothing for another seven days and get a refund, Carrie thinks up a plan to get new clothes and return them to the store in time, without paying a dime.
When Doug finds out Arthur has a half-brother named Skitch, with whom Arthur owns a house, he wants Arthur to move in with him. What Doug doesn't know is that Arthur always got picked on by Skitch and apparently things haven't changed that much over the years.
During a visit to Doug's parents, Carrie finds out that they have been lying to him since his childhood, because they wanted to protect Doug. Meanwhile at home, Spence introduces his new girlfriend to his mother. Arthur is present to fill up awkward silences, but maybe that wasn't such a great idea.
Doug gets upset with Carrie when he finds out that she always lets Arthur have his way, until he finds out he can use this ability in his own advantage to get food, watch the shows he wants and various other things.
Meanwhile, Spence wants to see the movie The Warriors of Grün, and to avoid endlessly waiting in line, he sets up a chair in front of the movie theater to be the first one there. But when he has to take his mother to the hospital, Deacon has to take Spence's place in line, but this doesn't really turn out as planned.
Doug manages to break the bed when he gets on it, and now Doug and Carrie have no bed. They order a new one and have to spend the next couple of days in seperate beds.
Arthur discovers that Lou Ferigno gossips about everybody so he starts hiding to make sure Lou doesn't get any dirt on him.
Doug has lost a lot of weight and people are commenting on it constantly. Carrie starts to get jelous that people are paying so much attention to Doug. They go on a romantic vacation together and soon Carrie finds out that Doug brought another girl here years ago, but thinks she was the one.
Doug takes Carrie to a resort where he thought he took her when they were dating. Soon he finds out it was another girl and to make things worse when he is arguing with Carrie, they get lost in the woods.
Doug plays several games of ping pong with Arthur and Arthur wins by a lot. He decides to challenge Carrie to a match to prove he is not completly terrible and is destroyed by his wife. Doug decides the only thing to do is ask Arthur to train him so that he can have a rematch with Carrie.
Doug and Carrie decide to renew their wedding vows which they soon realize was a bad idea. The preparations are stressful and soon the only reason they are doing it is to convince people they are not having marital problems.
Carrie tells Doug that Kelly wants to go back to Deacon after their two years of separation. Doug is not sure whether he should tell Deacon about it, and when Deacon meets a beautiful stewardess who will just be in town for one night Doug decides to let Deacon have his fun. Carrie gets angry and wants Doug to tell him so that Deacon doesn't ruin anything that might happen with Kelly.
At a company picnic for Carrie's firm Doug's skills at softball make Carrie's boss ask if he will pretend to work for them so he can play on the company team. Carrie worries that Doug will not be able to convince people he is a lawyer, but he does so well that the other team offers him a job.
Arthur finds out his ancestors may have owned slaves and decides he has to make up for it. He starts bugging the only black person he knows, Deacon, trying to make up for it.
Carrie's gynecologist needs to get some landscaping work done. She recommends Danny for the job and Danny tries to overcharge the doctor. Carrie starts to worry that the doctor will drop her as a patient after this.
Carrie finds out that there will be layoffs at her firm and that her boss might be one of the people fired. She worries about losing her job.
Doug gets in trouble with Deacon when he loses Deacon's koosh ball that was a gift from his son. Doug has to find a way to get it back from his supervisor.
Doug and Carrie are having thanksgiving at their house and invite all their friends. A strange man with an eye patch shows up and asks to use their phone. Doug lets him and soon the man is standing on their porch for multiple hours waiting for his friend to pick him up. Carrie thinks this guy might be a murderer so she wants Doug to send him away but Doug is convinced he is an okay guy.
Carrie lost her job and now Doug is annoyed by the fact that she is doing nothing all day when he is struggling to help them survive. Carrie spends her day doing nothing but Doug convinces her to try to find a job. Instead of looking for a new job, Carrie decides to make decorative cell phone covers, which are awful looking.
Carrie starts to work at IPS with Doug when the company gets busy during the holiday season. Doug can't stand this and begins suffering everyday. Arthur tries to get friends to be in a Christmas card with him.
Doug and Carrie have and arguement about what led them to be in there current home, so they tell the story of what happened when they were looking for a home. Doug originally wanted another house that was terrible and Carrie hated it.
Arthur wins $2500 when he is playing bingo at the senior center. Doug and Carrie are short on money ever since she lost her job so they are forced to ask him for money. Trouble comes when Arthur wants to decide how the money is spent.
Due to the fact that Doug and Carrie have watched Deacon and Kelly's kids so much, Doug and Carrie ask Deacon and Kelly to watch Arthur for a night. Trouble arrises when they ignore Carrie's warnings about what happens when Arthur eats spicy food.
Doug runs into an ex-girlfriend at an art gallery with Carrie. Doug broke up with her in a terrible way and does not want to have contact with her. Carrie quickly starts to like her and they are soon going shopping and having lunches together. But soon Carrie wants to stop seeing her because she realizes that Trish is extremely annoying, but wants to see her one more time so she can use her employee discount to go shopping.
Doug is sent to the hospital to have his appendix removed. When Carrie is visiting Doug she hears him talking about other women in his sleep and she gets jelous about it.
Doug has a new delivery route and has to deliver to a guy that always answers the door in nothing but a towel. Carrie decides to take up dog walking with Holly to make some extra money. Arthur has an extra burial plot to sell, and tries to sell it to Spence, but ends up accidently giving it to Spence's mother. He has to find a way to get it back.
Deacon has a new friend, but it turns out that his new friends is Doug's old enemy from high school. This causes trouble with their friendship, because Doug still hates the him for telling people he ate food out of the trash can.
Doug and Carrie are going to Florida to visit Doug's parents. Carrie wants to stay in a Hotel, so she invites Deacon and Kelly to with them. Everything is going great until Doug and Carrie check into their hotel and realize it is filled with people on Spring Break.
Carrie has an interview at a prestigous real-estate firm and she really wants the job. Trouble comes when Arthur ruins the interview for Carrie by acting crazy in the lobby. Doug has to patch things up between them after Carrie tells Arthur he wrecked everything in her life since childhood. Arthur is determined to fix all the things he has screwed up for her.
Carrie wants to start hanging out with people from her office and Doug hates the idea. Carrie forces him to go along with it, so Doug decides to get back at her by doing embarassing things while she is out of the room to drive them away.
Danny and Spence realize that women like men who take care of elderly people, so they start using Arthur to get dates.
Spence finds out his ex-girlfriend Denise is getting married and decides he has to stop it. He gets Doug, Deacon, and Danny to go with him on the long drive. Danny ends up with a case of lockjaw and the group has to max out their credit cards to get him treated, and still make it to the wedding on time.
Carrie is sick and she was supposed to be Arthur's partner in a shuffleboard tournament. Doug ends up having to do it, but he is a terrible player. Just when he is starting to like it, Arthur replaces him with Spence, a former shuffleboard champion.
Carrie eventually begins to feel better but pretends to be sick to keep getting food from Holly.
Holly gets kicked out of her apartment leaving her with no place to live. Arthur offers to let her stay in the basement with him. Carrie is very busy and to help out, Holly starts cooking and doing other work around the house. Doug learns what it is like to have an upstairs wife, and a downstairs wife.
Doug needs to find a way to get to Vegas for the weekend with his friends. He decides to build up some credit with Carrie by taking her to a spa. Arthur teaches Spence to count cards in preparation for the trip. They decide to test his skills at a church poker tournament.
Carrie is put in charge of a group of people and has to get a project done. She works during the night and Doug begins to miss her, so he starts spending time with Arthur.
Carrie gets fed up with Doug and his weight problem and convinces him to go to an overeaters group. Doug goes but sees the food in the room is all healthy so he walks into a room with doughnuts. He soon finds out that it is a support group for people in abusive relationships. Soon Doug starts blaming his overeating on Carrie and her constant anger at him.
IPS hires a new worker and the guys love him. They think he is one of the funniest guys they have ever seen. Doug does not like this because he was the funny guy before all of this. He decides he has to win back the favor of the men.
Doug is forced to go to a work function with Carrie. When one of Carrie's coworkers comes up to him and starts talking he decides to fake a heart attack because he cannot remember her name. As a result of this, Carrie's boss decides to send Doug into testing to make sure he is in okay health.
Doug's parents come to visit and Doug suprises them with tickets to see one of their favorite plays. Doug's dad does not want to go or even spend time with Doug's mom because he is busy getting ready for a model train expo. Arthur starts spending time with Doug's mom and soon he starts to like her.
Doug and Carrie are shopping for Christmas when Doug sees a midget hitting on Carrie. He decides to go over and chase him away. Later when he is trying to buy something he realizes his wallet is gone, and thinks the midget stole it. Doug decides to hunt him down with Arthur's help rather than talk to a short policeman about it.
Doug and Carrie get in a fight with Deacon and Kelly and soon they are off trying to find a new couple to be friends with. They are unable to find anybody and are stuck hanging out with a couple they hate to avoid the Palmers. While out with the other couple they meet some of the other couple's friends and fall in love with them, but have to think of a way to get their phone number from them.
While out shopping Doug finds a new cologne that he likes. Everyone is complimenting him on how good he smells, until he gets home and Carrie tells him that she hates it. Doug decides to keep wearing it in secret, and soon Carrie finds out and tries to get him to stop by doing things he hates.
Carrie starts making some extra money and decides to hire a maid. The new maid really annoys Doug because she is constantly moving things and only speaks Spanish. Doug decides to fire her and hire Spence's mom who ends up being terrible at the job.
Doug wants to take classes to learn to become a bartender, which has always been his dream. He soon realizes that being a bartender is not as fun as he thought it would be.
Lou is selling some of his old exercise equiptment, and his videogames which he has become addicted to so his wife is making him sell them. Doug decides to buy a home gym because he feels that Carrie might be putting on some weight. Lou agrees to be their personal trainer, and Doug has a hard time, so he agrees to let Lou play video games during his workout time if he does not have to do any work.
When Doug and Carrie were dating Carrie was afraid Doug was not serious about her. Doug told her the most romantic thing she had ever heard and she was in love with him ever since. She finds out that the line was from a stupid movie and was said to a monkey.
Doug is delivering a package to his old high school and sees his football coach. Soon he is returning constantly and being treated like a football legend.
Arthur loses his eyedrops and temporarily goes blind, deaf, and mute, leaving him completly dependant on Holly.
Carrie is feeling depressed about her looks with her 35th birthday approaching. Doug decides to get construction workers to hit on her as she walks by.
Deacon has a new friend that he is spending time with. Doug gets jelous, but when he finds out that he is black, he decides Deacon must be fulfiling his "black needs." Doug gets upset when he finds out that the new friends is basicly a black version of himself.
Doug wins tickets to go see a Final Four game in St. Louis and Carrie wants Doug to take Arthur. Doug does not want to but Carrie says he will never have to do anything with Arthur ever again if he does this. Doug jumps at the idea but his plane is delayed and Arthur wanders off leaving Doug in a bad situation.
While eating lunch at a diner with Deacon, Doug manages to annoy a waitress so much that she says she wants to fight him when he finishes eating.
Carrie is going shopping to find things to redecorate her office and convinces Holly to come with her so she can use her van.
Carrie is out buying an Ipod and the cashier forgets to ring it up. Carrie goes to talk to her pastor about what to do. Doug is delivering to a family and is invited to come in from the cold. He finds out that the wife's father will be moving in soon and tries to convince them what a bad idea it is.
Carrie gets skybox tickets for a baseball game and brings Doug, Deacond, and Spence to watch while she talks to a possible client. Doug offenders her and Carrie sends Doug and Deacon away before she can realize Doug is married to her. She makes Spence pretend to be married to her.
Doug decides to go listen to a presentation about a timeshare at a ski resort so that he can get a free plasma TV. Carrie gets worried that one of the salesmen will convince Doug to buy something and wants to leave.
Spence and Danny pretend to be a gay couple to get a free TV too.
When a neighbor dies Doug and Carrie decide it would be a good idea to buy the house so that they can sell it for a profit.
While at the gym with his friends Doug sees a pole dancing class. He decides he has to convince Carrie to take the class. She reluctantly agrees, but then she loves it. She decides to show Doug on a pole that they installed in their room, but Doug finds out she is horrible.
Doug and Carrie get into a fight and a program on Carrie's computer records the entire thing. When they see the things they said to each other they decide to talk to a marriage counselor.
Carrie finds out that Doug lied about getting a job while they were dating so that he could have sex with her.
Doug and Carrie feel like they might not be popular at work and start to try to win people over.
Holly is getting married and moving away and Arthur does not believe it. Carrie tries to stop her from moving by coming up with a bunch of stupid reasons for her not to get married.
Doug notices a sandwhich called the Deacon at Cooper's and gets mad, accusing Deacon of stealing the sandwhich idea from him.
Carrie gets mad at Doug when she realizes that he is constantly getting haircuts from a hairstylist just because he thinks she is hot.
Spence asks Lou to go to a Sci-fi convention with him and Lou reluctantly agrees. Soon Lou is excited about it. Spence has to get Lou not to go after he meets Adam West in the subway and he agrees to go.
Doug takes Carrie to a bed and breakfast, thinking it would be romantic, but it ends up being a terrible place. The owners are disgusting but nice, so Doug does not want to hurt their feeling by leaving, but they try to find a way out.
Much to the confusion of the Heffernan's, Deacon and Kelly are disinterested in purchasing the house next door to Doug and Carrie when it goes on sale.
When the couple next door decides to sell their home, the Heffernan's try to persuade Deacon and Kelly to buy it. Doug and Carrie realize something is wrong when the two are completely disinterested in the home. In confidence, Deacon tells Doug that Carrie is the reason they don't want to move next to them while Kelly confides to Carrie that Doug is the reason. Meanwhile, Danny and Spence go to extremes to impress the couple's beautiful niece.
When Doug starts receiving fan mail from someone who saw his performance at a karaoke club, he lets the attention go to his head, only to have his ego shattered when the emails suddenly stop coming.
When the emails applauding Doug's singing suddenly stop, Doug goes back to the karaoke club in an attempt to get his fans back. But when Carrie discovers an email from a rabid fan, she jealously puts a block on all of Doug's incoming emails. After Doug finally unblocks his email, he discovers that the adoring emails have turned insulting and threatening.
When Doug runs into his old pal Ray Barone, and both wives happen to be out of town, they decide they're long overdue for a guys' night out.
After a quick shopping spree for some snazzy new clothes, the boys decide to check out the new nightclub in town. Confident to prove they still have the moves, they make a small wager to see which one can convince a girl to dance with them first. But things get heated when Ray opts to pay a young lady to dance with him and her boyfriend sees the transaction. Meanwhile, after 20 years, Carrie, for the first time, accompanies Arthur to his mother's grave. Upon arriving, Carrie becomes confused and angry when she sees the epitaph on the tombstone that reads, "Devoted Mother of Simone."
Doug and Carrie are roped into helping out at their church during the holidays: he guards the manger, while she tries to bake a cake. Also, Arthur and Spence attempt to write a Christmas song so they can cash in on the holiday, but soon realize it is going nowhere and decide to try writing songs for other holidays.
When Doug is not allowed to hold Danny's girlfriend's baby, Doug gets annoyed and tries to convince Carrie to have a child so he can get back at Dann.
In order to help convince Carrie it's time for a child, Doug borrows the baby from Danny so they can give parenting a test run. Doug quickly adjusts to being a dad, but the transition isn't as smooth for Carrie. Meanwhile, Arthur resorts to blackmail when he's denied the title of "customer of the month" at a local coffee shop.
After convincing his mom they could make a fortune, Doug and his mom set off on a series of smaller poker games in order to come up with the $1,000 buy-in to play in the high stakes game.
Meanwhile, when a job promotion becomes available, Carrie's boss tells her that she would have a better chance of landing the job if she could lose her accent. Carrie hesitantly agrees to let Spence, who proclaims to be a speech coach, help her lose her thick accent. Although after several difficult sessions, both Carrie and Spence realize this is going to be tougher than they expected.
Doug and his gang rent an apartment upstairs from their favorite restaurant, but when the excitement of having their own secret sanctuary wears off, the guys stop hanging out, leaving Doug all alone. Desperate not to lose their hideout, Doug takes a job as a busboy in the restaurant downstairs until Carrie discovers his secret life.
Meanwhile, in order to keep her new client, Kirstie Alley, happy, Carrie is forced to consume large quantities of food in front of her as part of Kirstie's bizarre weight loss program.
Doug convinces Carrie that he can get rid of their bug problem and doesn't need to hire the creepy and expensive exterminator, Pete. But when his bug bomb fails to work, Doug and Carrie are forced to sleep in the car while Pete does his exterminating. Meanwhile, when the hotel that Arthur stayed at gives Carrie a free hotel voucher for their pest inconvenience, Carrie and Doug offer it to Spence and Danny, so that they can bunk at their place while their house is being gassed.
When Arthur discovers that Doug is fully recovered, he blackmails him in order to get things that Carrie won't let him have. Meanwhile, when the slam ball court becomes available at Doug's gym, he tells Carrie he's at his physical therapist's office in order to buy him some playing time. But when Carrie comes home and discovers that someone has doped Arthur with sleeping pills, she becomes frantic and goes to find Doug.
When the Heffernans receive an oil painting of themselves as an anniversary gift from Deacon and Kelly, they dislike the picture so much that they decide to stage a robbery rather than hang the painting in their home.
Doug and Carrie can't bear to hang the disproportioned painting, which shows Doug with tremendous teeth and Carrie with a hideously oversized arm, but Deacon stops by and hangs the picture for them. Unable to get the image out of their heads, Doug and Carrie convince Danny and Spence to break into their home and steal the painting.
After convincing Carrie to sell her hair to a wigmaker so they can afford to join Deacon and Kelly on a cruise, Doug realizes he doesn't find Carrie's new shorter hairdo attractive. When Carrie catches Doug making fun on her hair to the cruise ship's entertainer, Robert Goulet, Carrie locks herself in their cabin. Doug and Deacon then turn to Goulet and his wardrobe department to help them find a wig for Carrie. Meanwhile, when Arthur sees Carrie's new hairdo, he starts thinking that Carrie might not be his biological daughter and uncorks a plan to gather DNA to prove whether or not Carrie is his offspring.
Doug lies to Carrie and tells her that he regrets not accomplishing more in life and that he's going to sign up for the IPS management program. As part of his new outlook on life, he tells Carrie that he also he needs to conquer a local rollercoaster called "Goliath." However, Doug gets busted when he and Carrie run into his boss at the amusement park and she thanks him for accepting Doug into the IPS management course. Meanwhile, Deacon, Arthur and Spence have a wonderful day at the amusement park, when they learn they can skip waiting in the long lines by putting Arthur in a wheelchair.
Everything is going smoothly between the newly formed friendships until Kelly grows tired of Doug's forgetfulness. With Kelly no longer available, Deacon and Carrie invite Doug to hang out with them, but Doug is so distraught over losing Kelly that he ruins their evening. Meanwhile, Arthur feels betrayed by the coffee shop girl, Gloria, who is having great success by taking Arthur's relationship advice and doing the exact opposite.
Carrie convinces her female co-workers to blow off work and take advantage of the hotel's spa. However, her plans are put in jeopardy when Doug surprises her and wants to spend the weekend watching the original "Planet of the Apes" series. Carrie tries to convince Doug to go home since she's going to be working all weekend, but gets caught in the lie when he discovers she already has an appointment for a massage. Meanwhile, Danny and Spence sneak into the Huey Lewis concert by wearing Doug's "Event Staff" jacket, but their excitement quickly disappears when they are forced to fulfill several absurd requests for the band.
When Doug starts hanging out with Joe, a driver at Priority Plus, his fellow drivers lose all respect for him. When Joe invites Doug to join him at a Neil Diamond concert, he discovers that Joe was only acting like his friend to get him alone so that he and his fellow Priority Plus drivers could play a trick on Doug.
Arthur accidently starts a fire while cooking bacon and Carrie and Doug decide it is time to move Arthur into a retirement home. While Doug is cleaning up the scorched basement in preparations for his new media room, he finds some playbills that reveal that Arthur was once a well-respected actor. When Doug confronts Arthur about his days in the theater, Arthur confirms that he was an actor, but that he gave it up to raise Carrie. Doug starts feeling guilty for abandoning Arthur and tries to convince Carrie to let him stay. Meanwhile, Danny and Spence agreed that after two years in their apartment, Spence would get the larger bedroom back from Danny, though Danny now refuses to move into the smaller room, so Spence moves into the room with Danny and a classic standoff begins.
When Carries tells Doug to find a way to invest their tax return check, Doug decides to buy an ice cream truck he sees for sale. Thinking this is a good way to make money, he sets out to sell ice cream. Trouble comes when he tries delivering in another truck driver's zone, leading to a war of the ice cream men.
A woman keeps calling Doug's house, claiming to have spent a romantic weekend with him, but Doug has no idea who she is and tries to find a way to stop her from calling. Realizing that she is calling the wrong Doug Heffernan and leaving sexy messages, he sets out to stop Carrie from finding out, but when she does find out and does not care, Doug becomes even more upset about the situation.
When O'Boyle goes into rehab he asks Doug and Deacon to fill in for him as supervisor. Doug initially turns it down and tells Deacon to go for it, but then decides he wants it so that he can prove to Carrie that he is not content being a driver for the rest of his life. Soon Doug realizes he is in over his head when everything starts going wrong at the office.
Doug is reading Major a bedtime story and changes the end to make it scarier. The story ends up traumatizing Major, causing Kelly and Deacon to have problems getting him to be babysat by Doug.
Arthur also realizes that he can make money by charging people to fill a seat in their car, allowing them ride in the carpool lane.
When Doug and Carrie are not invited to the block party, Doug shows up anyways and ends up adopting a dog to prove he is a good person. Doug finds out that a dog is a lot of work and tries to find a way to return it without looking bad, but before he can, Carrie tells him they have to keep the dog a little longer because their neighbor, Glenn, says he can get her a good deal on a massage chair.
Arthur also tries to help Danny break his addiction to gambling, but ends up getting hooked on it too.
Deacon's son draws a picture of Arthur with crooked teeth, which leads Arthur to try to convince his family that he should get braces. Doug uses this idea to try to improve Carrie, by having Deacon's son draw a picture of her flat-chested.
When Deacon and Kelly buy a vacation house on a lake Carrie convinces Doug that they were able to afford it because the two were so cheap and never pay for anything when they are together. Doug and Carrie go to the new home with Deacon and Kelly and decide to get back at them by making Deacon and Kelly pay for everything. Spence is also trying to find a new job and Arthur decides to give him advice on getting one.
Doug, in an effort to be more healthy decides to become a vegetarian, which angers Carrie when he decides to push his new beliefs on her.
Doug runs into an old friend at his high school reunion and they decide to play a prank on the principle to get revenge for an event of the past.
When an apartment in Manhattan becomes available to Doug and Carrie, Carrie sees it as a chance to live out her dream of living in the city, but Doug wants nothing to do with it. He brings it up to her in hopes of looking good, because he knows that it is impossible to live there because of Arthur. Arthur soon decides to marry a singer he loved for a long time and move out, causing Carrie to want to move.
Doug and Carrie decide to go visit their priest for some marriage counseling, and while there they run into some old friends who just had a baby. This causes them to consider a child.
Arthur's wedding day is here but he soon finds himself without a bride when Ava St. Clair leaves him for not being gay. Doug, still mad at Carrie for lying about the apartment in Manhattan, decides he is going to divorce Carrie, and shows up the wedding drunk.
After Doug informs Carrie of his plans to leave her, she decides she wants to go to China and adopt the child they were going to get without him. Doug also wants the baby, so they race to get to the airport so they can get the baby.
