Blood In, Blood Out - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Agent Patrick Jane stood before Lisbon, Rigsby and Cho as they sat at their desks one evening at CBI headquarters, demonstrating one of his famous coin tricks. Using his amazing sleight of hand, Jane puzzled the watching agents as he flipped the coin one last time. Calling on a bet made minutes ago by Rigsby, Jane asked for his money. Rigsby handed over a dollar and asked in amazement, how did he do it? Jane smiled that sardonic grin of his and allowed as how he could not reveal his secret. Rigsby snorted in feigned disgust and turned on his heel, grabbing his coat and bidding all a good night, but before he reached the door, Cho introduced his date, Elise, to the agents and Cho's phone rang. Cho answered it, then replaced the receiver, telling his fellow agents that a long time friend of his, one David Sung, had been found dead of gunshots in an alley in Oakland. He said that he wanted to go alone, but Jane insisted he wanted to go along for the ride. Cho asked the other agents to look after his date, Elise, then he and Jane slipped out.

At the homicide scene, Detective Sharon Flory informed the agents that Sung had died of three bullets to the back. Sung had been a gangbanger for many years, had a rap sheet and had just been released from six months in Folsom Prison. Flory had had Cho's cell phone records checked which indicated that Sung had made three phone calls to it, but Cho had not called him back nor responded to Sung's messages. Cho told Jane that he had not talked to Sung in thirteen years. Cho and Sung had both been members of the asian street gang called The Playboys, but Cho had left the gang and become a police officer. Flory mentioned that Sung had told his grandmother, Mrs. Sung, that he had not returned to the gang after prison. Cho decided to go talk to Mrs. Sung.

At CBI headquarters in Sacramento, Mrs. Sung came to talk to Cho. She told Cho that Sung had not returned to the gang, that he had gotten a job as a janitor at a large office building downtown, and was trying to go straight. Mrs. Sung begged Cho to find her grandson's killer to which Cho replied that he could not, there was nothing he could do since it was in other hands now. Mrs. Sung left with tears in her eyes. Jane had observed the interview and told Cho that he should help the old woman. Cho reluctantly agreed.

Cho knew a pawn shop owner in Oakland named JohnJohn, a large heavyset man who seemed to know the Playboys quite well, but who denied knowledge of them.
When Cho demanded to know where KS, the leader of the gang, was, JohnJohn just shook his head and said that if he heard anything, he would let the agents know. When JohnJohn was distracted by talking to Cho, Jane picked up a list of numbers from the counter that seemed to make no sense. JohnJohn denied knowing what the numbers might mean. JohnJohn did tell the agents that he'd heard Sung had been working for a janitorial service.

That night, as Cho and girlfriend Elise were getting ready for bed, three masked men with guns burst into Cho's bedroom and threw the two to the floor, beating Cho unconscious and beating Elise in the face, causing bruised and contusions. Later, as Elise was being taken to the hospital in an ambulance, Cho explained the situation to Jane and vowed to find the masked men, saying that he was pretty sure they had been members of the Playboy gang and he meant to find them.

At the pawnshop again, Jane stood by while Cho strongarmed JohnJohn's male clerk, demanding to know where KS was, now! The man said that he was probably at his house up the hill, so the agents left. Cho knew where Ks's abode was. Jane stayed in the car whilst Cho broke into KS's house, drawing his gun and using physical force on KS, demanding to know who had killed Sung. KS stammered out that he had sold Sung five thousand dollars worth of cocaine, but the man had not sold it, as best KS knew. KS thought that Sung was trying to bust into the drug market, take a piece of the action for himself and KS did not like that fact. One of KS' henchmen jumped Cho, dragging him into another room where stood Jane, a gun held on him by another gang member.Jane used soothing words and gestures to defuse the situation, gently talking to KS, gaining his temporary trust and telling him that all the agents wanted to know was who killed Sung? KS did not know, so the agents left, back to headquarters.

Meanwhile, Van Pelt and Rigsby went to Sung's old boss, Adam Reed, who was in charge of the janitorial services for his building and surrounding buildings. Reed seemed not to care much that one of his employees had been killed, but still answering the agents' questions as best he could. The agents left, reporting to Jane what they had found out. Cho and Jane decided to venture into the building themselves that night to find out what they could, especially what had happened to the large amount of cocaine. They accosted one of the janitors late that night who led them to a cocaine partying Reed and his dipsy blond secretary, Crystal, enjoying themselves in a vacant office nearby. Jane told the blond to leave and they questioned Reed, who admitted that he had strongarmed Sung into getting the cocain for him, but he denied killing or having Sung killed. Did Reed know what this list of numbers meant? No, he did not. Cho got very mad and dragged Reed out into the hall, locking Rigsby and Jane in the office with a broom handle jammed into the door handle. Cho frightened a janitor in the hall as he pulled Reed out into the darkened parking lot and appeared to proceed to kill the man with a tire iron, the man's screams of fear and pain echoing through the dark wet night.

Rigsby and Jane were released from the locked office by the janitor, who had been a friend of Sung's, and all three men ran out into the parking lot. They found a very dead appearing Reed, covered in blood. The janitor, frightened out of his wits by Cho's apparent homicide, admitted that he had coerced the now dead Sung to steal bank account numbers from the garbage and give them to him. When Sung began to refuse to continue with the thefts, the janitor had shot him in the back three times one night in a nearby alley and had fled the scene. The janitor had planned to sell the bank account numbers and make himself a tidy pile and was going to let the now free from prison Sung take the rap for the thefts, not caring what might happen to the ex convict. Jane and Cho handcuffed the man and took him into custody. A now conscious Adam Reed sat up, rubbing his sore head, as the janitor gaped. Cho had merely knocked him out after handcuffing him to the car. Cho apologized for assaulting Reed, but Reed would still have to serve time for coercing Sung into illegally obtaining drugs for him.

At Mrs. Sung's house, Cho sat with her as they sipped tea, explaining what he had discovered about her grandson's death, that he had not returned to the gang and that he had been coerced into committing crimes. Cho asked the old woman's forgiveness for not answering her grandson's messages for his help and said that he knew his old friend had indeed changed. The two hugged as the old woman's eyes streamed with tears.
