At the Rancho Muleta Fire Station, firefighters are gathering to go search nearby woods for a man who murdered a veteran fellow firefighter named Paul Satterfield. He has been stabbed to death and
his body found by a brother firefighter, Toby Rawlins. Rawlins has been celebrating his last night as a single man before getting married the following day. He has seen the man dressed in a mask and
dark leather coat run into the woods, has sounded the alarm. Toby tells Jane that Paul had been on the job for twenty five years, that he had been a good friend to his fellow firefighters, that he will be sorely
missed.
At the fire station, agents Cho, Jane and Lisbon question the men before setting out to find the murderer. Jane sets out by himself, going to a nearby pond in the woods, looking for the perp. He is accosted
by a man in a dark leather jacket and mask who pushes Jane under the water, holding him down until Jane stops struggling, passes out. The man escapes through the woods, unseen. Lisbon finds Jane
floating face down in the murky waters, pulls him out, kneels tearfully by his side, calling out his name as the paramedics try frantically to revive him, using cardio paddles. Finally, Jane responds to their ministrations, spitting out
water, taking deep ragged breaths. He seems fine until Lisbon talks to him in a hospital room a bit later. He has lost his memory prior to being a CBI consultant, tries to flirt with Lisbon who eyes him
uncertainly. When she questions him as to what he may remember, he says that when he was unconscious, he saw a white light, with lots of people reaching out their hands to him, even saw Lisbon's
deceased mother. She doesnt believe him, thinks he has reverted to the days when he pretended to be a psychic. Lisbon tells Jane that his doctor says he is in a dissociative fugue, that his memory should
eventually return. She leaves him to recuperate in the hospital and returns to CBI headquarters where she asks Cho, Van Pelt and Rigsby to help her with Jane's recovery, to which they agree.
Paul Satterfield's widow, Diane, comes in for an interview with Van Pelt. When Van Pelt asks where her wedding ring might be, Diane says she is having it resized, but something about the woman's manner
makes Van Pelt suspicious. Diane says that she was working the local suicide prevention hotline, has proof for an alibi for the night that her husband was killed, that she had loved Paul, had not had anything to
do with his death. Diane says that Paul had saved a man, Tom Wilcox, from the man's own burning house two weeks prior to Paul's own death, that the local newspaper had run the story and pictures about it. Diane
seems almost scornful about the incident, intimating that her husband had been a glory hound, an adrenaline junky.
Jane, now fully recovered, is at the firehouse with Rigsby, questioning the firefighters. Jane, in a showoff mood, pretends to be psychic, uses the firehouse mascot, Hoser, to supposedly sniff out
the murderer. The pooch points out a man who, unbeknownst to himself, is carrying a bit of red kipper, dried fish, which the dog loves. Jane had slipped the fish into the man's pocket earlier. The laugh is on the man. Nearby, Jane sniffs a scent on
a man named Larkin. Jane says that's a scent an older woman would wear. Larkin openly admits that he had been having an affair with Diane, Satterfield's wife., that he understood that Paul
had wanted his wife to be sexually happy since he couldnt please her in that way.
Back at the pond where he had nearly drowned, Jane and Lisbon are sitting on a bench, gazing into the dark waters. Jane admits that he still cannot remember anything at all. Lisbon says it will take
time and that the agents will do their best to help him. He thanks her.
Later, Larkin tells Jane that Satterfield had been in the burning house with Larkin two weeks ago, that Satterfield had left Larkin alone in that smoke filled room. Larkin had been unhappy with
Paul's actions since there should always be two firefighters going in and coming out together. Paul had broken that rule.
Jane and Cho go door to door in the Wilcox neighborhood, asking neighbors if they had seen anything that night the house had burned. At the motel where Tom Wilcox, his wife and daughter
are staying, Jane talks to them. Tom tells Jane that he is very grateful to Satterfield for having saved him that night. He says he lost everything in the house fire to which Jane replies that
surely his fire insurance will give him an advance? Tom admits that he had no fire insurance, that he is a savings and loan officer.
Lisbon and Van Pelt are interviewing Diane Satterfield once more. Lisbon remarks that Diane seems to have lots of death insurance money from her husband's untimely demise. Diane admits that
she had had the policy doubled just a month before her husband's death, but that she had just been waiting for it to happen since his job was so hazardous, that he had seemed to enjoy challenging
death.
Jane and Cho enter Tom Wilcox's burnt out home ostensibly to fetch Tom's daughter's doll she has been asking for. Jane finds the ragged looking doll, picks it up, seems to choke up in memory of his
own deceased daughter. Cho steps out of the room, what is left of it, to allow Jane time to recover his composure. He does not see Jane hurry into a nearby closet and try to open the safe there. He
does not succeed and vanishes. Cho is unable to find Jane, returns to headquarters where he informs the other agents of Jane's disappearance. Cho notices that sixty
dollars is missing from his wallet, supposes that Jane took it. A phone call comes in, informing the agents that Jane is at a nearby nightclub, giving his psychic show. They go there, and listen as
Jane talks to a young woman about her deceased mother. Once his schtick is over, Lisbon says its time for him to go back to the hospital. Jane says goodbye to a few firefighters there who
have been paying their last liquid respects to Satterfield, goes back to the hospital. Slipping off his shoes and socks, he climbs into the bed, telling Lisbon that he is heading out tomorrow morning, that he will
tell her who the killer really is. She tells Jane that she can make him stay in the hospital if he does not cooperate, hold him as a material witness. He seems to agree to be a good lad, closes his eyes
Lisbon leaves.
The next day, Jane gives Tom Wilcox's daughter her dolly. Tom has a truck full of things and is packing a few more inside as Jane returns to talk to him. Jane says that he knows Tom had robbed
those ATMs a few weeks before, that he had been wearing the mask shown on the bank video tapes. He says that Tom had accidentally set his house on fire trying to destroy the rubber mask. Jane
says he knows that Satterfield had seen the mask in that smoke filled room that night, had put two and two together about the ATm robberies. Jane says he realizes that Tom had tried to drown him that night in the pond shortly after Tom had stabbed
Paul to death. Jane says he wants half the robbery money in return for the mask. Jane palms a cheap rubber mask wrapped in a plastic bag, hands it to Tom, who gives him the money. Jane
steps back as the agents move in, arrest and handcuff Wilcox.
Later, at CBI headquarters, Jane, with a lovely brunette clad in a skimpy red dress clutching his arm, walks in, a big smile on his face. When Lisbon asks him if he knows where the rest of
the stolen money is, Jane denies knowing. The ever vigilant Lisbon spies a very expensive diamond bracelet on the brunette's arm, tells Jane she knows he has it. The brunette, named Tamara, pipes
up and thanks a now chagrined Jane. Lisbon hands him his latest check. He scowls when he sees the paltry amount, hands it back. Lisbon tells him to come for a ride with her in her car.
The shadows are lengthening as they pull into a driveway, an empty house sitting, looking forlorn. They enter the house, walk upstairs. Lisbon opens a bedroom door with a huge happy face
drawn in faded red on one inner wall. Jane sees this and the memories of his dead wife and daughter come flooding back. He remembers his prior life now.
