Dwight takes Ryan under his wing and puts him through a strange set of challenges designed to increase his sales skills. One of these tests involves a stop at the Schrute family's beet farm. Meanwhile, Jan instructs Pam to keeps a log of Michael's activities for the day, and Jim begins to fit in at Stamford.

| This episode was originally scheduled to be fourth, but was switched to be fifth one week before airing.
| Dwight references one of the founders of Dunder-Mifflin, Robert Mifflin, who killed himself because (according to Dwight) he hated himself.

Ryan: But the other one is, I’ve heard that before.
Dwight: Ok, a man and his son get into a car accident. They are rushed to the hospital. The doctor says, there’s no way I can operate on this boy
Ryan: Because he’s my son. The doctor is the boy’s mother.
Dwight: A man is found hanging from the ceiling
Ryan: He stepped on a block of ice, hung himself and the ice melted.
Dwight: A hunter--
Ryan: It’s a polar bear because you’re at the North Pole.
Dwight: Damn it!!

Dwight makes a quick reference to the strange organization that created the hatches from the TV series Lost.

The impression Michael does over the phone is a combination of Bill Cosby doing a commercial, and the voice he does for Fat Albert of the show Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids.
| Michael: What's going on, we have a deal? Deal or no deal? Let's make a deal. What is the deal?
Michael makes references to three separate NBC shows: Deal Or No Deal, Let's Make A Deal, and Jerry's stand-up line from Seinfeld.
