When Oscar returns from his three-month vacation, Michael insists on throwing him a "welcome back" party. Dwight has taken a job at Staples since Michael questioned his loyalty, and the staff finds they actually miss him. Karen feels insecure now that she knows that Jim once had romantic feelings for Pam.

| In this episode we find out that every night, after everyone's gone home, Dwight has been secretly watering all the plants and arranging Michael's toys on his desk.
| When Michael is talking at the end of the episode, you can see he has a framed certificate hanging on the wall that states he owns a "Quality Seyko Timepiece."
| The original title of this episode was supposed to be "Oscar's Return." The simplification to just "Return" helps include both employees that return to the office in this episode.

| Jim: Hey Ryan, do you wanna pull a prank on Andy?
Ryan: Not right now, but... ask me again ten years ago.
Jim: I liked you better as the temp.
Ryan: (Sighs) Me too.
| Dwight: How would I describe myself? Three words: hard working, alpha male, jack hammer. Merciless. Insatiable.
| Andy: Hey, just listen. I forgot to tell you the plan for this Saturday. You, me, bar, beers, buzzed, wings, shots, drunk, waitresses hot, football Cornell/Hosfstra, slaughter! Then quick nap at my place and we hit the tiz-zown.
| Michael: Love that Andy, right? Solid fellow. Seems smart enough. Likes me a lot. A lot. Too much. Like a crazy person. A little. Not super crazy, just... there's something about him that creeps me out. I can't really explain it. He's always up in my bidness. Which is ebonics for 'being in my face and annoying the bejesus out of me.' I don't understand how someone could have so little self-awareness.

| Dwight is wearing a Battlestar Galactica T-shirt when he arrives back at the office at the end of the episode, but that is not the shirt he was wearing when he left Staples. It seems unlikely he'd stop off at home to change his clothes.
| When Andy lists the Saturday plans he has for himself and Michael, they include a Cornell-Hofstra football game. This episode, however, takes place in January, while college football is played during the fall.

| Audio: the muzak in Staples from An Officer and a Gentleman
The music playing in the background at Staples is the muzak version of \"Up Where We Belong\" which was the theme song of the film, An Officer and a Gentleman. In fact, the whole scene when Michael goes to Staples to invite Dwight back to Dunder-Mifflin is reminiscent of the final scene in the film when Richard Gere gets Debra Winger.

Andy sings his song about working with Jim to the tune of "Benny and the Jets", a hugely popular 1973 song by Bernie Taupin and Elton John.
