In the aftermath of the beach trip, Pam is teased about her emotional speech to Jim, while Michael, Jim and Karen head up to New York for their corporate interviews. Karen and Jim discuss what it would mean to their relationship if one of them were to get the job, and Jan does her best to win back Michael's affections. Meanwhile, Dwight prepares to become the next manager of the Scranton office.

The scene of Jim finding an encouraging note from Pam is reminiscent of the scene from the series finale of the original British series, in which Dawn finds a similar note from Tim and returns to the office.
| The episode title, "The Job," has a double meaning - it not only refers to the open position that Michael, Jim, and Karen are interviewing for, but it also hints at Jan's "boob job."

Dwight's utterance regarding the black-painted office is a reference to the supposed inscription at the entrance of hell from Dante's Divine Comedy.
| Dwight: Once I am officially regional manager, my first order of business will be to demote Jim Halpert. So I will need a new number two. My ideal choice: Jack Bauer. But he is unavailable. Fictional. And overqualified.
This is a reference to the FOX drama 24, and the main character, Jack Bauer, who is played by actor Kiefer Sutherland.

Michael thinks he is imitating Kevin Nealon as Franz, from the "Hans and Franz" sketches on Saturday Night Live, who in turn were imitating Arnold Schwarzenegger. Michael is actually doing an impression of "The Terminator," a character played by Schwarzenegger in the film of the same name.
