A machine designed to be a companion for a specific market by a corporation has a life of its own.
Ah the great but never boring question about robots having feelings. This episode is great and has a hot (albeit brief) Sofia Shinas (who really should have been offered more Hollywood roles in her careers). William Sadler (another underrated actor) plays Frank Hellner a scientist confined to a wheelchair. He gets chose to continue work on the robot known as Valeria 23. Originally he doesn’t want to continue the experiment but faced with rejection by his physical therapist Rachel, he decides to continue.
Man any guy would be lucky to have a machine like Valeria 23 and actually she’s much better than the older Rachel, who despite being beat by her current boyfriend, is too idiotic to dump him in favor of Frank.
The only thing they might have done differently with this episode is not make the character of Frank such a loser, a sore bitter loser. As a viewer, you feel compassion for him at, but soon that fades away as Frank is one of those people who are destined to be miserable by their own hand. You know the type, the type of person that will never be happy. He is also very erratic (just like Valeria 23). He mistreats Val at one point, and it’s not hard to see why this machine becomes prone to violence (she was built to be as close to human as possible). While very predictable, Valeria 23 is an entertaining episode.
There is a special feature for this episode on MGM DVD.
