On the last day of the Mars III mission her crew probe dark and rocky corridors. They find writing and a blue pod they cannot lift. Their attempt disturbs something, for there comes a burst of bluish incandescence and then the shadow of something moves. They haven’t got time to investigate further before they must return home. Then, five months into the flight, something hits their ship. Communications are out and their external oxygen tank has lost pressure. And there’s something growing on a cable, something that grows and changes very rapidly and isn’t from Earth. Suspicion feeds paranoia and the men soon realize none of them can trust the others…

Episode Quotes

Control Voice: (opening narration) The book of Job tells us that he who discovereth deep things out of darkness bringeth out to light the shadow of death. Will man’s unquenchable thirst for discovery ultimately be his undoing?

Ed: Look, Pete – if you are Pete – I’m sorry for the way I’m acting. But if you saw what I saw you’d understand.

Ed Barkley: Who are you? Where are you from?
Alien: I’m from a planet many light years from your solar system. When our sun died out, we had to find a new home.
Ed Barkley: So you chose Mars?
Alien: A few of us were put in cryohybernation with the hopes that one day we would have the opportunity to begin again. We are a peaceful species. Once we get to Earth I promise you there will be no more taking of lives.

Alien: Our species is millions of years old. It is our right to take lives in order to continue.

Control Voice: (closing narration) The true measure of a hero is when a man lays down his life with the knowledge that those he saves will never know.

Episode Goofs

A swell ending... or is it?
At the end of the episode, explosive decompression caused Ed’s body to swell grotesquely and burst. Experts believe that skin is tough enough to withstand even explosive decompression of one atmosphere (the difference between cabin pressure and space pressure) without rupturing. Worse, earlier in the episode when Alan was ejected into space he did not explode in this fashion, so the episode itself is inconsistent on this point.
