An unemployed journalist visits friends in the small town of Micklethorpe. When the new owner of the local newspaper offers him a job as the paper's editor, he accepts and unwittingly publishes information that revives old local scandals and rivalries. His life is further complicated when he becomes romantically involved with two local women at the same time.
