Living in Harmony - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
A man, apparently Number Six, rides across the plains of the Old West. Arriving in a town, he gives his sheriff’s badge to the marshal and turns over his gun belt. Leaving on foot, Number Six confronts a thug with a gun and a fight breaks out. Several other men arrive and quickly overwhelm Number Six, knock him unconscious, and take him to the nearby town. They dump him in the town and ride off.

A man welcomes Number Six to the town of Harmony and notes that they’re “exclusive.” He directs Number Six to the saloon where the barmaid, Kathy introduces herself. Number Six reaches for a drink and a man shoots the glass and invites him over. The man who shot the glass is the Kid, who is working for the Judge. Number Six punches the Kid unconscious and sits himself down. The Judge speaks enigmatically of knowing Number Six, and then tells the Kid to back down. He wants to hire Number Six, asking why he handed in his badge and gun. Number Six refuses to answer and turns down the job offer. As some of the Judge’s thugs come in, the Judge suggests they all be friendly. Number Six says he’ll be moving on and heads outside. He goes to the stable but discovers the horses are too expensive to buy. A group of townsfolk approach Number Six, insisting it’s a good town. When Number Six says they can keep it, the group turns ugly and the Judge’s men escort Number Six away from them and into the town jail. The Judge is there and asks if he’s changed his mind. Number Six still turns down his job offer and is locked up for “protective custody.” The Judge takes out another prisoner, Johnson, and has his men take him to a tree for a hanging. Kathy, the man’s sister, tries to stop the hanging where he’s hung by the neck. Only Kathy tries to stop it, but without success.

The Kid watches Number Six in the jail cell and drinks heavily. He draws his gun repeatedly on Number Six, who doesn’t react. Later Kathy arrives with a new bottle for the Kid and flirts with him, while managing to grab the keys. She promises to come back later to see him, and then slips around the back and gives Number Six the keys. Once the Kid has passed out, Number Six makes his escape and steals his horse. Kathy runs up with his and gives him directions for the only way out of town. In the jail, the Judge confronts the Kid and slaps him. Meanwhile, the Judge’s men are waiting for Number Six, lasso him, and drag him back to town.

Number Six is taken to the saloon and brought before the Judge, then informed that there are no charges are against him. Kathy is put on trial for helping a prisoner to escape. The jury finds her guilty and she’s taken to jail. The Judge offers Number Six a deal: once he takes the job offer, Kathy goes free. Number Six refuses and gets a drink, and the Kid arrives and shoots him several times, nicking his hands and face. The Judge arrives and gives the Kid his old job back… watching Kathy at the jail. Number Six taunts the Kid but the Judge restrains him and sends him on his way. Number Six finally gives in and the Judge orders a reluctant Kid to release Kathy. Kathy apologizes and leaves, and the Judge notes she’s safe only as long as Number Six works for him. He gives Number Six a gun but Number Six refuses to take it.

The next day, Number Six goes on his rounds and one of the thugs, Zeke, confronts him. Number Six takes him on and Zeke’s friends jump in, beating Number Six. He finally emerges triumphant and goes back to the jail, where Kathy apologizes again and warns that they’ll kill him. She notes that her brother was a stubborn man too. She invites him to come to the saloon for a free drink and heads back… where the Kid jealously watches her. When a man flirts with her, the Kid throws him off. The man tries to draw his gun and the Kid guns him down. Number Six arrives and the townspeople accuse him of standing by and doing nothing.

Later, one of the townspeople, Jim, visits Number Six and offers to help him clean up the town. Number Six doesn’t react and the Judge confronts Jim at the saloon and asks what he was talking to the sheriff about. When Jim refuses to say anything, the Judge has his men beat him to death and then drop him off at the jail. An angry Number Six considers picking up his gun, and then throws it aside. He goes to the saloon and tells Kathy they’re leaving tonight. The Judge, seeing them together, plans to tell the Kid of what’s going on.

That night, Number Six rides out of town and subdues the guards. Meanwhile, Kathy prepares to leave the saloon but the Kid is waiting for her. He tries to kiss her and she fights back. She bites his lip and he strangles her.

Number Six returns to Harmony to find Kathy and sees the Kid leave the saloon. He goes inside and finds Kathy’s corpse. Number Six buries her in the graveyard and then returns to the jail and puts on his gun. He takes off his sheriff’s badge and goes outside to find the Kid waiting for him. They draw… and the Kid goes down. Number Six goes into the saloon and the Judge congratulates him. The Judge is unaware that Kathy is dead until Number Six mentions it, and then lets slip that the Kid was only supposed to rough her up a bit. The Judge gives Number Six five seconds to make up his mind. Number Six draws against the Judge’s three men and kills them… but the Judge guns him down. Number Six collapses to the ground…

… and wakes up in the salon, wearing his Village clothing with a radio headset. He sees the Judge and grabs him, only to discover it’s a cardboard cutout. Running outside, Number Six discovers that all the people and horses are cardboard figures. A Village band plays in the distance and Number Six runs down the street to discover the Village. He goes to the Green Dome where the Judge (Number Two) and the Kid (Number Eight) are waiting. Kathy (Number Twenty-Two) is also there, alive and apologetic. Number Six turns and leaves without a word. Number Eight insists that the scheme of using hallucinatory drugs and a dangerous situation have always broken subjects in the past. Number Two objects but Number Eight accuses him of giving up too soon. Number Twenty-Two cries and then runs out.

Later, Number Twenty-Two goes to the saloon in the mock Western town, only to discover Number Eight waiting for her. She tells him that the game is over, but he addresses her as Kathy then takes on the persona of the Kid and strangles her for real. Number Six, nearby, hears Number Eight screaming hysterically and runs in to knock him out. With her dying breath, Kathy says that she wishes it had been real. Number Two arrives as Number Eight recovers consciousness and runs up to the balcony. Still ranting as the Kid, he throws himself to his death and Number Six can only walk out, leaving Number Two with his two dead minions.
