Fall Out - Recap

<-- Previous Episode
The events of the previous episode, "Once Upon A Time," are recapped. Number Six defeats Number Two in "Degree Absolute" and demands to be taken to Number One, while Number Two's corpse is sealed away.

The Supervisor and the Butler escort Number Six onto an elevator where they descend into a lower chamber. He is ushered into a dressing room where the clothing he wore in a previous life is waiting for him. He dons the clothing and walks down a hallway with jukeboxes playing "All You Need is Love" by the Beatles. The Butler unlocks a sturdy metal door leading to a chamber where security forces are organized while a council of robed masked figures labeled Activists, Pacifists, Defectors, Therapy, Reactionists, Nationalists, and so on are gathered and wildly applaud. The President of the Assembly welcomes Number Six while the Supervisor dons a robe and a black-and-white mask. The President announces that they are assembled to resolve the question of revolt and warns that rebellion must be dealt with by force. He warns that the community is at stake and they are now in security.

Number Six is introduced to the Assembly but the President notes that he has won his freedom and must now be referred to as "sir." He then notes that the transfer of ultimate power requires some preliminaries and directs Number Six to the chair of honor. The caged kitchen from the Embryo is lowered and opened, revealing Number Two's corpse. A glowing light emanate from a mechanical eye on a column on the wall marked "1." The President orders a team of doctors to resuscitate Number Two, shaving off his beard and trimming his hair in the process. The President then says they are confronted with three forms of revolt.

The first is Number Forty-Eight, a young hippy type wearing a frilled shirt, black suit, and top hat. He is raised into the chamber via a tube and tries to sing and the Assembly is thrown into a panic. The President calls for order and then has the guards release the rebel. He speaks of youth rebelling for the sake of rebellion and its elimination when it threatens society. Number Forty-Eight rings a bell around his neck and sings again. He goes wild, scattering the guards and doctors as he runs around the chamber spreading chaos. Number Six finally calls out "young man" and gets his attention. The President thanks Number Six for his intervention but insists that protocol must be followed. The "1" eye flashes and somehow tells the President to expedite matters. Everyone returns to their places and the President verbally spars with Number Forty-Eight, who tells him to take it all. The Assembly and the President chant "Take" and demand that Number Forty-Eight confess. Number Forty-Eight bursts into song again and everyone except Number Six and the Butler join in. The President declares Number Forty-Eight guilty and then announces the charges: defiance of the elementary laws that sustain the community, questioning the decisions of authority, and refusing to acknowledge his number. Number Six notes the proceedings without approving them and has no comment. The President has Number Forty-Eight returned to a delivery tube and confined, pending Number Six's inauguration.

The President apologizes to Number Six for the disturbance and proceeds to the next revolutionary: Number Two. He looks about in astonishment, surprised to be alive and clean-shaven. He calls for silence and declares himself a new man. He congratulates Number Six on his ascendancy and the Butler on his faithfulness. However, the Butler refuses to follow him. Number Two addresses the Assembly and speaks of how the community abducted him to use his political and oratory skills on their behalf. He wonders how they engineered his death and Number Six asks if he ever met Number One face to face. Number Two laughs at the question but is interrupted when the number 1 eye flashes. He decides to stare at the mechanical eye, challenging it to look back at him, whoever or whatever it is. He tosses away his badge and says he'll be hypnotized no longer. The eyes belches smoke and goes dead, and Number Two is pulled forward. The guards take him before the President. Number Six says to hold him until after Number Six's inauguration. Number Two defiantly enters a tube and laughs as he is lowered away.

The President talks of two forms of revolt, uncoordinated youth and a secure establishment member turning against the establishment. As an image of the for sale sign being removed from Number Six's flat in London is shown, the President praises Number Six as a true revolutionary who has survived intact and secure. Now they recognize him as a man of steel. He says Number Six must either lead them or go. His car is restored to him and he is presented with a million pounds, a passport, and the keys to his home. Number Six asks why he is free to go and the President says that he has provided them with an example of free and pure revolt, and they need him. Number Six fails to see and the President says they concede and plead for him to lead them. He asks Number Six to address them and provide a true statement for them.

Number Six takes the money and paper given to him and then ascends stand to address the Assembly. He calls for silence and starts to speak, but as he says "I..." the Assembly chants "Aye, aye, aye." He tries again and each time they interrupt him despite his call for silence. They rise to their feet and Number Six grows hysterical until the President calls for silence. He thanks Number Six on behalf of the Assembly and asks if he's prepared to meet Number One. Number Six follows the President and descends in a tube to a hallway below. He walks past more security guards and Number Two and Number Forty-Eight, confined in glass tubes marked "Orbit Two" and "Orbit 48" respectively. There is another tube, simply marked "Orbit." The Butler arrives and escorts Number Six up a spiral staircase to a control room holding globes of the world and a single robed and masked figure. Number Six approaches the figure, who turns to face him holding a crystal orb. Number Six takes it as the figure stretches its arms wide, revealing the number 1 on its chest. Number Six drops the globe and removes the figure's masked face, revealing a chimpanzee. Number Six pulls away that mask to reveal... himself. Number One laughs at him and Number Six laughs back and chases the figure around the room. Number One climbs out through a hatch in the ceiling and escapes, sealing it behind him.

Number Six takes a fire extinguisher and descends, where the Butler nods in acknowledgement. Number Six launches his attack and the Butler joins in. They defeat the faceless minions, free Numbers Two and Forty-Eight, and take their robes, then gesture in the guards outside. The guards are subdued and Number Six returns to the control chamber above. He watches the President and the Assembly on the monitor and then activates the fuel injectors. In the Assembly Chamber, the metal cylinder begins to activate and the President declares an emergency. The Assembly runs about in panic and Number Six and his allies return to the chamber and open fire on the security forces. The President orders evacuation as men are ruthlessly gunned down. The survivors run outside and the evacuation orders goes out across the Village. Everyone flees by helicopter as Number Six and the others get into the caged kitchen and the Butler drives it away, revealing it's on the back of a truck. They burst through a gate and find themselves on A20 headed for London. Behind them, the metal cylinder, revealed as a missile, launches from the center of the Village and ascends into the sky. The guardian sphere melts into nothing.

Number Six and the others throw away their robes and a passing motorist sees them dancing to "Hear the Word of the Lord." The Butler stops the truck and Number Forty-Eight gets out and walks along A20, trying to hitch a ride back the way he came. The others arrive in London and drop off Number Two, who walks toward Parliament as Big Ben chimes in the distance. Number Six and the Butler leave the truck and walk through London, and a police officer speaks briefly with Number Six. Number Six and the Butler then run through the streets, take a bus, and proceed to Number Six's flat. Number Six's car is waiting outside and he gets in as a black hearse drives by. As he starts the engine, the Butler goes up to the door, which has a "1" on it, and it opens automatically.

Number Two, wearing a suit, enters the Peers' entrance of the Palace of Westminster. And Number Six drives down a highway as thunder booms in the distance...
