Checkmate - Recap

<-- Previous Episode
New citizens arrive in the Village and Six tries to determine where they're coming from. One woman inexplicable claims that they were in the Village, but now they have come to the Village.

As Michael looks over the Purpose Floor, a woman comes in and he recognizes her as the winking woman who heard the ocean in the Village. She is Mr. Curtis' personal assistant, and explains that Curtis is waiting for Michael and placed a car at her service.

As the Village continues to expand, Six is summoned to the Clinic. He begins to run a fever and 313 notices. As she takes a blood sample, Six tries to make her aware that there must be more than the Village since there are newcomers coming in. 313 finally admits that there must be an Other Place, but the Villagers all accept what they see as ordinary. She checks the blood test results and realizes something is wrong.

Two and his son tour the new buildings established for the new comers. Two talks of the concept of "More Village" and semi-jokingly claims that the Village is the very consciousness of the universe. As he poses for pictures, Two talks to 11-12 about how this will be a moment to be passed down throughout the family from generation to generation. 11-12 is still upset at the death of 409, and Two tells him to find a girl and go dancing. Six arrives and shows Two the blood death results, and Two explains that it's a Certificate of Dying. Either Six must choose to embrace the Village, or suffer Village Death. Two continues to greet the newcomers and explains to Six that they've chosen life. He warns that if Six doesn't accept, then he will die one tick of the clock at a time.

Two arrives to talk to 313, who is still having visions of the girl with the box on her head. He explains that he has instigated Six's Village Death in the hopes of getting him to crack so they can see the Six within. He tells 313 to block her visions but 313 insists that she can't. Two warns that if she can't, then Six will die.

11-12 visits 909's grave and finds Six lying nearby, slowly dying. Six asks 11-12 for the information he needs to escape, and take everyone with him... including 11-12. 11-12 insists that his mother cares for him and then walks away.

The ailing Six walks through the village and 147 finds him. The taxi driver offers to take Six to a man who might be able to help and Six weakly accepts and gets into the taxi.

In Curtis' car, Michael finds 147 is the driver. 147 appears to be a different man with no knowledge of Six or the Village. As he drives, 147 explains that he used to be a violent man, but Curtis arranged for him to have a brain wash. Now 147 is happy and content, and all the anger of his previous life is gone.

147 takes Six to a Village shaman. The man says that something is coming and they must wait. Six refuses to accept that and tries to explain what he's experiencing.

The driver talks about how Mr. Curtis is helping to convince the courts to let him see his daughter.

147 doesn't know what to make of Six's garbled visions. 11-12 arrives to see Six.

The driver believes that Curtis has a plan for Michael. Both Michael and the driver are unaware that people are monitoring their conversation from a hidden room. They arrive at Curtis building and Michael goes inside.

Six watches as 11-12 drinks and bemoans the fact that he'll never be anything but Two's son. Six knows about the pills that keep M2 unconscious and wonders if she's dying. 11-12 explains that he always believed his mother would come back, and he refuses to abandon her. Despite Six's offer of escape, 11-12 believes the Village is all he has. He says he has something to do and tells Six to leave him alone so he can get drunk and finish his task.

Michael goes into Curtis' office and finds a woman waiting for him: M2. She is surrounded by mementos of her life, which identify her as Helen Curtis. Curtis introduces himself and explains that Helen was a biochemist fascinated with the subconscious. She speculated that she could enter the depths of her own mind and take others with her: people that Summakor had determined were "broken." Inside her mind, in a "Village" of simple lives and buildings, the broken people would be able to fix themselves. The driver was one such person, 147 in the Village. Michael was the one who monitored the CCTVs and found the broken people. Since Helen created the subconscious reality, she decided to create the child that she and Curtis could never have.

At Palais Two, 11-12 smothers M2 with a pillow.

Helen experiences her "death" in her subconscious and groans in pain. Curtis assures her that it won't be long now.

As 11-12 embraces his dead mother, Six goes to the Clinic. As he sits in the hallway, dying, Two places a wreath on his chest and tries to assure him that he will have a funeral with honor. When Six wonders if he will die at the right time, Tow assures him that the will. They're unaware that 313 is watching them.

Two returns to Palais Two and finds M2 dead and 11-12 gone. He and the Dogs go to the Go Inside Bar and find 11-12 dead, hung by his own hand. Two carries his son out of the bar and prepares to place him in state.

313 continues to have visions of the girl in the box. Now the girl is in a church, singing, and 313 sings along with her.

Holes spread throughout the Village.

Two goes to see 147 in his cab and 147 expresses his condolences at the death of his child. Two concedes that they have both lost a child and he wants it all to stop. As 147 talks of loss and the fact that his despair doesn't go away, Two says that he's had a dream of clarity. He believes that 147 may have gained similar clarity from the death of his daughter and asks if the driver likes and trusts Six. When 147 says that he does, Two explains that Six can everyone freedom from the Village. He tells 147 to call out "Six is the one" at the proper time, and says the driver will know when the proper time has come.

As Michael and Curtis drive back to Summakor, Curtis points out "broken" people on the streets: persons who were guilty soldiers and drug users who had their problems. Michael found them through Summakor and they were "taken" to the Village to be cured. Now they are fixed. Michael doesn't believe he can be fixed, but then realizes he wasn't taken to the Village to be fixed. He was taken there because he knew too much about Summakor. Curtis admits that they were unable to break or bend Michael, and they now want him to take them forward into the future. As they arrive at a church, Two asks Michael to come back to Summakor, and gives him an access card.

As Six is taken to the Clinic, Two asks 313 if she wants Six to live. He says he can give her Six's life, but warns her that she must answer a question honestly. When she agrees, he asks her if he's the reason that 11-12 died. 313 immediately tells him that he was. Two concedes that Six was right, but Two still has one last throw. He knows that Six loves his own humanity, and wants to do the right thing. Two plans to turn that against him to get him to surrender. Now he needs 313 to do the right thing and give herself to Six at the right moment. 313 agrees.

Six is taken to a hidden chamber to confront Two, who asks if he wants to die. Six prefers to die then remain a prisoner. However, Two insists that Six loves the Village and must give in to save it. When Six refuses, Two says that he has never had power over Six, and that he has chosen to remain there. A Rover guardian sphere appears, symbolizing Six's fear, and Two tells him that he must choose the open door over the beast. Six flees out a door marked "Way Out" and Two smiles.

11-12's funeral begins and the Villagers gather for the ceremony. Six arrives, cured, and tells Two that the holes are growing and will soon swallow the Village. He pleads with two to release the Villagers so that they can survive. Two ignores him and addresses the crowd, explaining that 11-12 killed himself because he was a prisoner. Two admits that his son was right, and that Six was right, and that they are all prisoners. As he talks, another hole opens up in the ground.

Inside the church, Curtis shows Michael a young girl, Sarah. It is 313, who is yelling repeatedly for the voices in her head to shut up. Curtis explains that Sarah was traumatized as a child and now she is beyond help. She was taken to the Village mindscape and began to recover, but has begun to deteriorate.

Two informs the crowd that they will all face the abyss as the holes spread and combine, plunging the Village. He tries to rally them, asking them to breathe in and out and add More Village. One child throws a rock at him, and 147 realizes the moment is at hand.

Michael wonders what they can do for Sarah. Curtis tries to get through to Sarah, who tells them not to look at her.

Two tells the Villagers that Six is the one to lead them. 147 calls out "Six is the one" as he agreed, and rallies the crowd in support of Six.

Curtis informs Michael that all he needs to do is agree, and they can fix the broken people.

As the Villagers chant for Six to led them, Two tells Six that they need a Dreamer to take M2/Helen's place before they are all destroyed. Six refuses but 313 steps forward and offers herself to Six and others, saying she'll take Helen's place until they find a better way.

Michael walks toward Sarah, offering his hand.

Six gives 313 the pills and she kisses him. She tells him that it's too late now and then passes out due to the influence of the pills.

Michael holds Sarah as she passes out in his arms.

Two, satisfied, tells Six that it is time to wake up. He puts his ever-present hand grenade in his mouth, pulls the pin, and destroys himself. As Six looks on, everything that he's experienced in the Village flashes through his mind.

Curtis goes back to his apartment to check on Helen. She is now conscious and awake again, and he tells her that she shouldn't look back. Meanwhile Michael takes command of Summakor, using the access card that Curtis gave him.

Six and the catatonic 313 go out into the desert. He admires the beauty of the Village and says that now they must turn it into a good place. The catatonic 313's only response is a single tear.
