Simon Templar is vacationing in Nassau, The Bahamas. He is invited to spend the weekend at the winter compound of an old friend, plump, middle-aged heiress Lucy Wexall and her kept husband Herbert. The weekend guest list includes many stereotypical luminaries of the early 1960s "jet-set" (international celebrities.)

There's John Herrick, budding tennis star who is courting Lucy's equally wealthy, but much younger and shapely sister, Janet. Also included is Miss Pauline Stone, Mr. Wexall's personal assistant and paramour. There's Arthur Greyson, a slick operator who is trying to get Mr. Wexall to invest his wife's money in a speculative oil deal. There's Astron, an Indian mystic who has befriended Lucy. Astron, despite detesting materialism, enjoys meditating by the swimming pool on the Wexall's sumptuous Nassau estate.

When Floyd Vosper, noted gossip columnist and celebrity smut monger arrives, the mood turns sour. Mr. Vosper has dirt on all of the guests and threatens to dish it in his widely-carried thrice weekly syndicated newspaper column.

After insulting and needling the Wexalls and their guests with his accumulated dossier of nefarious swill, Vosper retires to the beach for an afternoon nap after imbibing nearly an entire bottle of brandy after lunch. Shortly before dinner, Vosper is discovered on the beach, murdered, with an arrow through his chest. All of the guests had more than enough reason to dispatch Mr. Vosper to conceal their scandalous secrets. Who killed the despised Floyd Vosper?

Despite the skepticism of the local police inspector, Major Fanshire, Simon proceeds to unravel a murder mystery in the best whodunnit tradition of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.
