Recap

After an episode of Eye on Springfield, Marge feels that Springfield is too much of an illiterate, uneducated town, and worries about the tourist economy. She thinks that a film festival would help raise their economy, and she invites Jay Sherman the Critic over to Springfield to host the film festival. Homer starts to feel jealous of Jay's many talents, and he asks Marge to put him on the film festival jury. After watching Moleman's movie, "Man Getting Hit By Football", Homer is ready to make a decision. Barney's movie, "Pukahontas", wins everyone's attention, and Mr. Burns' movie really hit the gutters. Mr. Burns bribes Krusty the Clown and Mayor Quimby, two of the film festival jurors, to vote for him, and Jay Sherman and Marge vote for Barney's movie. Homer votes for Moleman's movie, which results in a deadlock. Marge reconsiders putting him on the jury, but Homer watches Barney's movie, and makes the right decision. Barney wins the film festival, and Marge tells Jay Sherman that people in small towns aren't as dumb as they think they are. In the end, Mr. Burns tries his movie for an Oscar, but instead, the winner was "Man Getting Hit by Football", the remake with George C. Scott...

Episode Notes
Chalkboard: None

This is the only episode that doesn't feature Matt Groening's name in the opening and closing credits. This was done because Matt Groening protested the episode for being a 30-minute advertisement for "The Critic" (due to the plot point where Jay Sherman comes to Springfield for the film festival) and didn't want to be credited for it.

Couch: The family sits on the couch, only now Maggie is the tallest while Homer is the smallest.

Episode Quotes
Barney: Next, they're going to show my movie.
Bart: You made a movie?
Barney: I made a movie? No wonder I was on the cover of Entertainment Weekly.

McBain: Have you ever noticed how men always leave the toilet seat up? (no laughter is forthcoming) That's the joke.
Audience Member: You suck, McBain!
McBain: (draws machine gun and fires several rounds into the audience)And now for my Woody Allen impression. (same voice) I'm a neurotic nerd who likes to sleep with little girls.
Audience Member: Hey, that really stunk.
(McBain throws a live grenade into audience; cut back to studio)
Rainier: (to Jay) The film is just me in front of a brick wall for three hours. It cost eighty million dollars.

Homer: Marge, do you respect my intelligence?
Marge: … Yes.
Homer: Okay. Wait a minute, why did it take you so long to say yes?
Marge: … No reason.
Homer: Okay. Wait a minute, are you humoring me?
Marge: … Yes.
