This episode's title is an adaptation of “The Way We Were”, a 1973 American romantic dramatic film co-starring Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford, directed by Sydney Pollack. It is also the name of the title song of the film.

The title The Way We Weren't is similar to the title of another Homer/Marge flashback The Way We Was.
