Single mom, Millicent Torkelson, is just trying to get by after her husband left her with 5 children and no money. Her daughter, Dorothy Jane, is horrified when she learns that her mother is going to take in a border, just so they can make ends meet.

Millicent convinces Dorothy Jane to get a dress a the resale store, but Dorothy soon finds out that the dress belonged to a girl she goes to school with.
Dorothy Jane is hoping that Millicent will fall in love with their new pastor. When he shows up at the door, it turns out that he did not come to make a social call, but to report that Steven Floyd was disruptive on the church's hayride.
Millicent decides that the time is right for her to re-enter the work force. However, this means that Dorothy Jane is going to get the job of looking after the kids when she gets home from school which is something she is not looking forward to.
Ruth Ann decides to blackmail Dorothy Jane by revealling to everyone some of her private love poems. However, the plan backfires when the revelations just encourage Dorothy Jane to write more.
Dorothy Jane longs to say good-bye to her depressing home in Pyramid Corners, Oklahoma and "bonjour" to the always exciting Paris, France. She thinks that she has found the perfect outlet to get her there, a student-exchange program. However, only two things stand in her way - the fact that she has to win the program's competition and her mother, Millicent.
After leaving more than a year ago, Randall Torkelson makes a return appearance much to the surprise of everyone in the family. Randall thinks he can use Dorothy Jane to make Millicent take him back. However, Dorothy Jane has a few things she has to say to her father about his walking out on them before she'll even try to help him.
Millicent announces to the family that Pastor Langley and his assistant are going to be their Thanksgiving dinner guests this year. Dorothy Jane is more than thrilled about this because she is convinced that she can get Pastor Langley and her mother together. However, according to Dorothy Jane, this is going to require Millicent to dress more "feminine".
Wesley has been sending items to his granddaughter, but the always keep coming back. After another item is returned, Dorothy Jane convinces Millicent to call the girl's mother and see if she can get to the bottom of the situation. Much to everyone's surprise, including Wesley, his estranged daughter-in-law and his granddaughter arrive for a visit and learn the true reason why the gifts were never received.
Millicent feels like it's time to stand up for the American way of life. She decides the best way to do that is by selling her pickled goods at her annual roadside without a license. This plan does not set well with the sheriff, however.
Steven Floyd ends up beating up one of the kids at school because of the things he said about his family. However, Millicent does not find this out until after she grounds him and he runs away.
Millicent had many reasons for not graduating high school, mainly the reasons of getting married and having children. However, Dorothy Jane tells her that there is no reason for her to not go and try for her equivalency exam. Millicent wants to take it, but wonders if she is too old to learn anything new.
After listening to the local "Love Professor" Kitty Drysdale on the radio, Millicent and Dorothy Jane find themselves longing for love even more. Soon they both decide to enter the dating scene.

However, Millicent is less than thrilled when she discovers that Dorothy Jane has left one of her close friends off the list because she is not well liked by the invitees.
Among the things that Millicent's very eccentric aunt willed her are a terribly sick dog, a valuable ring, an annoying riddle, an ugly painting and a ton of unanswered questions as to why she has received them all.
The Torkelsons end up getting a new start, as Millicent and her kids move to Seattle, where she has taken a job as a nanny for the two spoiled children of a widower named Brian Morgan. In the opener, Brian's daughter Molly plots to disrupt the closeness between Dorothy Jane and Millicent.
Dorothy Jane is loving her new job at a local fast food chicken joint. That is partly because of her young, handsome supervisor. After learning about Dorothy Jane's new "love", Molly wants to work at the restaurant as well, something Dorothy Jane prays does not happen.
Dorothy Jane is positively horrified when she is informed that she will have to share a bedroom with Molly. However, Molly is not the least bit concerned because she's too busy worrying about her father after catching him with a really attractive woman.
The top jock in the school ends up asking out plain old Dorothy Jane which irritates Molly. She ends up becoming very popular, but the relationship turns out to be pretty bland.
After Brian's dinner date cancels on him at the last minute, he decides to ask Millicent to fill in for her. The reason is because the client he is meeting is a posh man who feels that a man is only as good as the woman that he has in his life.
Brian gets an unexpected visit from his hot shot younger brother, Jim. Jim decides to ask out Millicent and soon things heat up between them. This new connection ends up leaving poor Brian out in the cold. However, he still will not admit that he has feelings for Millicent.
Molly decides to plagiarize Dorothy Jane's old book report for Jane Eyre, instead of using it as a guide like Dorothy Jane had intended. After she fights with Molly about it, Dorothy Jane finds out the real reason Molly ended up copying the report. The reason being is that Brian had gotten on to her for her failing report card and he told her if she got another bad grade in English she would be grounded for a year.
Dorothy Jane and Molly have a slight problem. It turns out that their 16th birthday parties are going to be on the exact same day. While Molly's is an all out backyard extravaganza, Dorothy Jane's is just a small indoor affair with only her family. Both end up longing to have the other one's party for different reasons.
Millicent tells Molly that she is not allowed to date the college boy that she has been secretly seeing anymore. This ends up causing Molly and Dorothy Jane to bond and the two end up sneaking out late one night together so that Molly can see her boyfriend.
Gregory has a very close friend Sam, who just so happens to be a a girl. However in Gregory's eyes, he has never really seen her that way. He ends up shocked when Sam transforms herself into a beautiful young woman with the help of Millcent. She then asks him to attend the Girl's Choice Dance with her.
Chuckie Lee ends up posing for Brian's clothing catalog. After a director sees it, he is then offered the role in a commercial. At first, Millicent is not to thrilled with the idea of him doing the job, but after Brian convinces her that it will be okay, she lets him do it. However, Chuckie Lee quickly realizes that commercial work is much different than print work.
To prove to Samantha how much he cares about her, he promises to get her some tickets to a hot concert. The problem is that the only way he can purchase them is with a credit card. Gregory decides to take his father's credit card and use it, but it does not turn out like he planned.
So Chuckie Lee won't be left out, Millicent decides to enter Chuckie Lee's Wilderness Troop's father-son bowling tournament. However after he gets there, Chuckie Lee feels left out as he sees all the other boys with their fathers.
