Henry is hungry for war with France, but agreeing to a peace plan proffered by Cardinal Wolsey, who has ulterior motives involving the papacy.
Allegiances begin to shift, both and home and abroad. Despite his loyalty to France, Henry debates striking an alliance with Charles V, the King of Spain, who was named Holy Roman Emperor.
The King has Charles be Margaret's escort to her betrothed, and later promotes him to Duke Suffolk for doing so. The Holy Roman Emperor and Cardinal Wolsey meet and attempt to finalize the pending treaty between the nations. Meanwhile, during a play Anne catches the King's eye.
Henry is christened "Defender of the Faith" by the Pope after he denounces Martin Luther. When the king is faced with a near-death situation, he decides to find a solution to his lack of an heir to the throne. Meanwhile, Princess Margaret reluctantly marries the King of Portugal, but it is short lived; and Henry continues to lust after Anne Boleyn.
Henry learns that Emperor Charles V of Spain, one of his allies, has released France's King Francis I from prison. Henry is shocked once more when he offers to make Anne Boleyn his sole mistress and she turns him down.

Sir Thomas More refuses to accept Henry's command that his people swear an oath of "allegiance and recognition of the King's supremacy" to both church and state. Anne is made aware of the King's womanizing ways, and arranges then gives her blessing to his next mistress. Also, Anne has a confrontation with Lady Mary, Henry's daughter.
Bishop Fisher and Sir Thomas More's failure to sign the oath of allegiance finds them charged with high treason and imprisoned. Elsewhere, Anne has complications with her pregnancy, while lust has Henry once again cheating on Anne. Mary Boleyn returns with surprises to the court, as Thomas Boleyn decides to enjoin his daughter Anne in ''not to lose the king's love."
Sir Thomas Cromwell has become Henry's right hand man. Anne's concern about her place in the court intensifies, as does her insecurity. The memory of Sir Thomas More's execution is haunting Henry. The king backs off on the idea of betrothing his daughter Elizabeth to a French royal, and in return gets a most insulting response.

Chapius retires as Ambassador of Spain and leaves Mary in the care of, what Mary believes the Queen to be, a heretic. Bishop Gardiner is still trying to trap Queen Catherine in confessing that she is a heretic and she is still too slick for him.
Recently back from his campain in Boulogne, France, Henry is not in the best of conditions and is in the midst of having another war. With everyone betraying the King, he is forced to take measures to stop it. Meanwhile, Gardiner is still on the war path to find heretics and starts to get the Queen's personal staff accused. Lord Surrey is brought into questioning over his recent failure as Captain of Boulogne and he is in mean spirits at the accusations brought up against him. With many decisions weighing on the King's mind, he is troubled with the recent betrayals and organizes what he feels is the best for England.
