Marsha White enters a store in hopes of purchasing a gold thimble. She is told to go to the ninth floor and enters from the elevator. As she arrives she notices that the floor looks empty except for the one item she came to buy. While leaving the store she is asked by the floorwalker if she found what she was looking for. She pulls it out to show him and notices the thimble is scratched. She tells the floorwalker about her experience buying the thimble and he informs her there is no ninth floor. Confused, she turns and points to the saleslady, but she is only a mannequin. She is helped to the store office, and after a long sleep, wakes to find herself alone in the store. She frightenedly explores the building when she meets up with the saleslady again. She tells Marsha to think what is happening. It finally comes to her that she too is a mannequin, and they all get one month to be human and this was the end of her 30 days and she was late in getting back. The floorwalker is shocked after seeing Marsha as a mannequin the next day...

Episode Quotes
Opening Narration
Express elevator to the ninth floor of a department store, carrying Miss Marsha White on a most prosaic, ordinary, run of the mill errand. Miss Marsha White on the ninth floor, specialties department, looking for a gold thimble. The odds are she'll find it, but there are even better odds that she'll find something else, because this isn't just a department store. This happens to be the Twilight Zone.

Marsha White: Now that's odd.
Saleswoman: What is, Marsha?
Marsha White: Well, you haven't any merchandise here at all except the thimble. Except the very thing I needed. The whole floor looks so empty called me Marsha.
Saleswoman: Did I? I'm sorry. That was forward of me, I apologize.
Marsha White: How did you know my name?
Saleswoman: I've probably seen you around the store.
Marsha White: No, you haven't. I've never seen you. Now, look, I don't want to make a big thing out of this, but what kind of a place is this? I mean, all I want is one small item, a gold thimble. I come up on a floor that hasn't a single thing in evidence except what I'm looking for. Well, you may be a little more sophisticated than I am but this I call odd.
Saleswoman: Please come again, anytime.
Marsha White: Thank you.
Saleswoman: Miss White? (a beat; Marsha turns around) Are you happy?
Marsha White: (curtly) I beg your pardon? I what? Am I happy? Well, you'll forgive me, but that's really none of your business.
Saleswoman: Oh, really? It's none of my business! Alright, Miss White, suit yourself! It's none of my business!

Marsha White: I'm a mannequin. That's what I am, I'm a mannequin, and it was my turn to...
Saleswoman: ...your turn to leave us for a month. Becoming much clearer now, isn't it? You left us for a month and you lived with the outsiders. But you were due back yesterday and you didn't show up! Now, that's very selfish Marsha, my dear. All of us wait for our turn and we simply do not overstay it! Now, it was my turn starting last night. I'm one day delayed already.
Marsha White: I'm sorry...I'm sorry I forgot. When you're on the outside, everything seems so normal. As if...
Man: As if what, Marsha?
Marsha White: As if we were like the others. Like the outsiders. Like the real people.
Saleswoman: Well, no serious harm done. Well, I'll see you all in a month?!
All: (walking toward elevator) Okay, take good care of yourself, have a ball!
Saleswoman: And you'll all miss me?
All: Oh, yes!! Have a good time! Bye!
Saleswoman: Bye! (elevator door closes)
Man: Did you enjoy yourself, Marsha? Was it fun?
Marsha White: Ever so much fun.
(both revert into their mannequin poses)

Closing Narration
Marsha White in her normal and natural stateā€¦But it makes you wonder, doesn't it? Just how normal are we? Just who are the people we nod our hellos to as we pass on the street? A rather good question to ask, particularly in the Twilight Zone.
