In an empty town overgrown by five years of plant life after mankind has been wiped out, a solitary woman in a military uniform walks the streets. Walking casually by skeletons and dead power lines, she spots a restaurant and goes inside to find food. She finds a can and tries to open it. A shadow falls across her: a man stands in the doorway, wearing a different military uniform. She throws a cleaver and other items at him and knocks him to the ground where they struggle until he knocks her unconscious. He wolfs down the food and then considers the enemy soldier. He considers a newspaper with a war headline and a bird cage with a skeleton of a canary. He sees a calender with a pin-up girl in a swim suit, and glances at the woman again. He goes outside and goes through a pile of newspapers advising citizens to evacuate the city, and a magazine showing women's war gear. He goes back into the restaurant and checks out the still-unconscious woman, and then pours a bucket of water on her. He offers her the rest of the food and tries to communicate with her, but she doesn't understand English. He notes there's no reason to fight any more and calls out to an uncaring uninhabited world. Realizing there's no way to convince her of what he says, he walks out and she gulps down the food.
The man goes into a barber shop and starts shaving himself. The woman takes a knife and goes to watch the man, who notices her and greets her, then gives her a bar of soap. She cleans herself up and dries herself off with a towel he tosses her. However, when he approaches her she runs back out into the street but then stops and watches him. He walks off and she follows him as he goes to a movie theater and tosses away some coins in the ticket office. He considers the movie poster for a military romance that's advertised and then spots a corpse with a gun. He grabs it as the woman grabs another gun from another corpse.
The two consider each other for a few moments and then the man simply walks away, slinging the gun over his shoulder. The woman follows him as he goes to the storefront and considers the mannequin with the dress. He removes it and offers it to her, suggesting she put it on. He walks away to let her dress in private in a nearby recruiting office, where she's surrounded by propaganda posters. Reminded once again of their conflict, she goes outside and shoots at the man, just missing. He walks away rather than shoot back and she lets him go.
Later, it begins raining and the woman takes shelter in the barbershop. The next day the man dresses in a new suit that he's found and takes two jars of peaches with him. He spots the woman nearby and tells her to go away. She's wearing the dress and he tosses her one of the jars, and she follows him down the street. Finally she approaches him and smiles, and he smiles back. The two of them go out into the world together.
