David Gurney wakes up in bed with his wife Wilma. He was out partying the night before and has overslept and is late to work. He prepares to get to work and can't find his razor, and wakes up Wilma to ask him where it is. She screams and says that she has no idea who he is and tells him to get out. Dave has no idea what she's talking about and tells her to call the police, thinking she's joking. He can't find any of his clothing and stops her from leaving while he can try to get an answer. He tells her to get things straightened out and goes to his job at the bank.
At the bank, no one has any idea who Dave is and there's a man named Cooper at his desk. Dave confronts the man and tells him to get out of his chair, then throws the man out. Cooper calls the bank guard over, who asks Dave to step outside. When Dave refuses to leave, the bank guard draws his gun, calls the police, and forces Dave outside. Wilma is outside with the police and they demand to know who he is. He takes out his wallet but his driver's license and credit cards are gone. The police take him away.
At a mental hospital, Dr. Koslenko interviews Dave who is insistent he's who he is. Koslenko suggests that Dave has created an imaginary person and notes that Dave's "wife" has a different last name. Dave refuses to accept is and Koslenko takes him to his office. Dave has the doctor call his friend Pete, who doesn't recognize him. He then puts through a call to his mother, who exists but doesn't have a son named Dave. There is no listing for Dave in the phone book. Dave starts to doubt himself and then wonders who he really is. Koslenko suggests he has a mental breakdown but Dave insists that whoever has erased his identity couldn't account for everything. He leaps out the window and steals a van, then goes to his favorite bar. The bartender, Sam, doesn't know who he is or what he drinks. Dave tries to get the bartender to identify him from three years of visits but Sam has no idea who he is. He asks Sam what he would do in his situation and tells him everything he knows about Sam, including his photo on the wall. Dave realizes what "they" have overlooked and goes to a photo company where he had a photo taken of his wife without telling anyone. They have the photo which shows him with his wife at the zoo. Koslenko and the police are outside and Dave shows him the photo... but Wilma has disappeared from it. Dave collapses to the ground, sobbing...
...and wakes up in bed as Wilma, covered over, tells him to wake up. She goes into the bathroom to remove her face treatment and Dave explains he had a nightmare. However, she comes out of the bathroom, and has a totally different face.
