A young boy, Georgie, is at home and his mother is off to the hospital to check on his brother Buddy, who is in the hospital with a broken leg. His mother tells him to call her if Gramma wakes up but Georgie assures her he’ll be fine and he’s not scared of her any more. However, once she’s gone he worries about being there. He picks up the phone number and listens in on the party line for a few minutes as a neighbor woman, Miss Dunn, gossips. Georgie then goes to the kitchen table and starts working on his homework.
A storm brews up outside and he tries to work, but he hears his gramma call to him from the end of the hallway, asking for her tea. He backs away in fear but finally summons his courage and goes to the hallway. His shadow detaches from him and skitters away, and Georgie hides behind the counter. Finally he remembers his mother’s instructions to take Gramma her tea. He makes some and takes it to her. As he goes, he remembers how his Uncle Doug arranged for Georgie’s mother to take care of Gramma, and how he said she’d die soon. Uncle Doug warned that she was more dangerous than ever since she became senile, and Georgie’s mother was the only one who could calm Gramma down.
Georgie enters Gramma’s room but when she claws at the air, he drops the tea and runs back to the kitchen. However, he catches a glimpse of dripping it into a compartment below the floor and realizes he has no choice but to clean it up. Georgie enters the room and cleans up the tea. He finds a loose board and pries it up and a red glow surges upward as voice scream in agony. Georgie crawls back and discovers ancient tomes in the compartment below: Gramma’s books, the ones they won’t talk about. As he takes them to the kitchen, Gramma gestures and seals the compartment again.
Georgie reads through the books, including one called the Necronomicon. It’s in a language he can’t understand. He also finds notes that reveal that Gramma was a witch and used her powers to have children after several miscarriages. Georgie hears Gramma chanting the words from the book. He goes back and discovers that she is seemingly dead. Georgie figures his brother will tease him unmercifully if he doesn’t check and make sure that Gramma is dead. He approaches her bed to check her pulse and confirms she’s dead. He puts her hand back up on the bed and backs away, and then uses a mirror to see if she’s breathing. The lightning flashes and he runs to the kitchen. He tries to call the hospital but Miss Dunn is still on the party line and he can’t get through.
As Georgie starts to panic, he realizes that he has to cover Gramma’s face or everyone will blame him for screwing up. He goes back to Gramma’s bedroom and slowly approaches the bed. As he reaches for the covers, Gramma grabs his hand. He manages to pull free as Gramma, a huge bloated figure, gets out of the bed and closes the door. Georgie tries to chant the names from the book, compelling Gramma to lie back down. She reaches for him and asks for a hug but she pulls him to her and absorbs him into herself, saying he was always her favorite.
Later, Georgie’s mother comes home and discovers the door is open. Georgie is quietly reading his books and finally tells her that Gramma died. She embraces him and says that Gramma has gone to a better place, and it wasn’t his fault. She assures him that Gramma will always be with them… unaware that Georgie’s eyes have turned monstrous.
