Jenna Winslow and her family move in to Evergreen, a gated community. A security guard greets them. Jenna, in Goth punk clothing and makeup, isn’t impressed. As they pull up, Jenna spits her gum out and notices that all the children are dressed the same way. She also notices a couple crying on their front lawn as they kneel over a newly-planted evergreen. Jenna also notices a cute boy mowing the lawn.
Mrs. Winslow serves lemonade to Jenna and their younger daughter Jules. As Jenna goes upstairs with her belongings, she passes out as her parents say it’s for her own good.
Jenna wakes up to discover that her nose ring and tattoo are gone and her Goth clothing has been taken away. She storms downstairs and finds that Mr. Brooks, the head of the community, is there. He informs her that her parents sacrificed everything they had to go there. Jenna runs outside and Jules goes to find her, and wants to know if Jenna will take her with them.
A black van enters the community as Jenna sneaks up to the gate. The boy she noticed earlier, Logan, introduces herself. He knows all about her from the Homeowner Association’s files that he managed to get a look at. He notes that the teens who don’t behave are sent to Arcadia, which he thinks is a military academy. However, he has his own stash of booze, drugs, and MP3s and offers to share with Jenna during the upcoming mandatory community picnic coming up. The day of the picnic, Logan never shows up. That night, Jenna watches as Brooks visits Logan’s parents and says that he’s had enough chances. Jules comes up and insists that Jenna should behave, and Jenna snaps at her sister. They make up but after Jules goes in, Jenna sees Logan run up to the house. His parents refuse to let him in and he tells Jenna to stay away. The black van pulls up and security guards taser him and throw him into the back, then drive away.
The next day, Jenna is secretly using the computer when Brooks comes to her house and wants to talk about Logan. Brooks notes that Jenna was seen with him and he attacked a security guard with a hunting knife. Jenna lies and says she tried to warn Logan, and Brooks tells her to report any further violations. She agrees to do so but after she leaves, he asks her parents if she can be trusted. Brooks informs the Winslows that Logan’s fate will be decided at a mandatory community meeting that night.
Jenna runs into Jules and says that she ran an online search and found no mention of an Arcadia Military School. Jules is concerned that they’ll be kicked out if Jenna is caught breaking the rules. Jenna asks her sister to trust her.
That night, Jenna sneaks into the school and watches the community meeting. Each adult is placing a black or white marble in a bowl, while Logan’s parents look on nervously. The marbles are counted while Brooks calls for random car checks to stop contraband from entering Evergreen. Brooks gets the results of the vote and offers his condolence to Logan’s family, promising them Logan will always have a place in the community and they’ve already picked out a tree for him. He addresses the adults, saying that while they’ve lost some children, they’ve saved many more.
Jenna sees Logan being taken out to a van and taken away. She chases after it but the guards make sure Logan can’t escape and she’s forced to flee. She runs home where she finds Jules sleeping on the couch. Jenna asks for her sister’s help and tells her to lie about where she’s hiding. She tells Jules to sneak out later and meet her at a different spot. Jules agrees and the two embrace before Jenna leaves.
Jenna is smoking in the woods when Jules arrives. However, Jules has brought their parents, Brooks, and the security guards, and explains she did it because Jenna was going to ruin everything again. Jenna is thrown into the van as her parents quickly get Jules away. The sign on the van says “Arcadia Fertilizer Company.”
Later, the Winslows are gathered at an evergreen tree in front of their house. They each put a bit of mulch at the base of the tree, and Jules smiles as her father praises her.
