Episode Recap

Matt McGreevy is driving home through a poor part of town, coming home from work in the pouring rain. He’s talking with his wife but hangs up when he hears someone yelling. A black man runs to the car and pounds on the windows, but Matt locks the doors and drives away. Matt looks back to see three men beating on the man who approached him for help.

Matt arrives home and goes into the bathroom, where he discovers an unexplained cut on his forehead. His wife Hilary is confused and upset, noting the city is going to hell and the man who asked for help was probably a criminal. The next morning, Matt oversleeps and his wife wakes him up as she goes, but he’s feeling stiff and sore. After she goes, he checks his ribs and discovers that they’re badly bruised. He goes out to get the paper and discovers that the man who asked for his help was a college professor, John Woodrell. He has coffee with his friend Donnie to confess his guilt. Donnie says not to worry about it and that he had a reason to drive away. He tells Matt to get on with his life.

Matt goes to work where people stare at him. He thinks they’re looking at his cut until someone shows him a mirror… his skin is darker. He goes to see a doctor who reports there’s no sign of disease. The doctor says he’s normal for a part-Caucasian/part-African American, and pigmentation is determined genetically. As Matt continues to get darker, he drives home but when he comes in he discovers that he’s transformed fully into John Woodrell and Hilary doesn’t recognize him. Hilary runs out and his dog Reggie comes at him. Matt runs outside and one of his neighbors shoots at him.

Matt drives off and tries to get a hotel room, but his ID doesn’t match his new face and the clerk won’t give him a room even if he pays cash. The police have found his car and Matt is forced to slip out the back. That night, he’s unable to get a taxi because of his race. Seeing the obituary in a newspaper article, he goes to the Woodrell house where John’s father-in-law Thomas is astonished to see his son-in-law. Matt tries to explain without success and asks to see John’s wife Clare, hoping she can help him change back. He explains that he abandoned John and that’s when he started to transform, and she’s hoping Clare will forgive him for his mistake so he’ll change back. When Matt says he wouldn’t have abandoned John if he’d known he was a college professor, Thomas wondered if he would have made the cut.

Clare has overheard the entire thing and comes out despite her father’s warning. She asks if Matt would have helped her husband had been a white man. When Matt can’t answer, she says there’s nothing she can do for him and leaves him outside. As it starts to rain, Matt walks through the streets and the same men who attacked John come after him and start to beat him. Matt manages to fight them off and run into the street, yelling for help. He runs to the car of… Matt. Matt starts to drive away and the men catch up to John. This time, Matt backs up and drives them off, and lets John into his car. John thanks him for his help, and then wonders what made Matt change his mind. Matt admits that he wondered if it had been him.
