Graphic artist Andrew Lomax is trying to meet a deadline on a graphic novel, "Sleepless City." Plagued by writer's block, he goes up to a cabin in the woods and starts fantasizing about a woman he's drawn, Sondra. He begins to see her in bed with him and thinks he's hallucinating. He can't touch her, but he begins seeing signs of her around the house like wet towels and a used shower. He hears noises in the kitchen and goes in to find... Sondra, making breakfast. She reminds him that they met each other in his dream and Andrew wonders if he's going insane. She says that she's there to help him meet his deadline and provide him with inspiration. Andrew begins to get inspired and goes back to work with a passion.
Andrew's agent Lafe arrives to ask for some of the pages. Concerned about what Lafe might think if he sees Andrew talking to a hallucination, Andrew refuses to answer the door. Lafe drives off and Andrew change his mind and runs after him, but too late. He goes inside and finds that Sondra has cleaned up the place on her own. He suggests they go out so he can show her off but realizes that no one could see his hallucination.
As Andrew continues drawing, he notices that Sondra is outside, flirting with the cable guy, Sam. After Sam leaves, Andrew confronts Sondra who seems unconcerned that someone other than Andrew can see her and refuses to explain. As Andrew gets more hostile toward Sondra, she refuses to go to bed with him and he gets blocked again. The next day Sondra announces that she's driving off to be on her own for a while. Ignoring Andrew, she drives off when he chases after her. He walks after her to the gas station, where she seems surprised that he's there. Sam comes out and Andrew throws a punch at him... and his hand goes through Sam's head. The cable guy ignores Andrew entirely and drives off with Sondra.
Andrew trudges back to his cabin and finds Sondra at his desk, completing his work. He tries to get her to go back to the way things were, and she realizes he doesn't know what's going on. Sam comes in and kisses Sondra, then suggests she come to bed and leaves. Deciding that Sondra has too much of a mind of her own, Andrew gets out the sketch of her... only to find that it's a sketch of himself. Sondra explains that she's the one with writer's block, and she created him as a way to relax and get through the block and meet her deadline. Now she's bored with the possessive Andrew and happy she's found a real man. She starts erasing the sketch of Andrew... and he disappears a piece at the time. He begs to be allowed to continuing existing, but she casually finishes erasing him. Sam comes in to see if she's okay, and she says that she's never been better while crumpling up the sketch paper.
