A woman, socialite Laurel Janus, sits in a courtroom as the judge tells defendant Stanley Coe to rise. She reads the jury’s determination that they have found him guilty of the murder of humanitarian Nicholas Janus two years ago, but recommend that he not receive the death sentence. The judge sentences him to 15 years to life and dismisses the jury, and Laurel leaps up and yells that Stanley deserves death for killing her husband. She confronts the DA, Lew Gallo, and he insists that he did the best he could with the evidence he had.
