In a futuristic society, a killer stalks and kills two hikers in the forest outside a city.
At home, a Civil Security Guard volunteer, Dr. Jeffrey Freed, bids his wife Kelly and baby son Anthony goodbye .Kelly is worried that the killer, a kreetor, was one of species wiped out fifty years ago. The kreetor, a genetically engineered beast, attacked Jeffrey’s grandfather. Scott assures her that he and his team will destroy the kreetor and everything will go back to normal.
Jeffrey’s five-man squad goes into the woods and Lt. Joanne Yarrow helps them load up. The other men, Kim, Wolowicz, and Hughes, wonder what the kreetor wants. The best estimate is that the hikers went near its lair. They have until 1900 hours the next time to find the kreetor and kill it. Kim and Hughes are overconfident and Yarrow reassures Jeffrey that they’ll come through when they have to.
The team moves through the woods, separated to keep a search line. They rendezvous and discover that Kim is missing. They hear no birds or animals in the woods and assume the kreetor has killed Kim. They go back and find Kim’s rifle, and call the incident back into the base. They wonder what the kreetor looks like and note that no one has ever lived to describe a kreetor. Jeffrey is ordered to proceed and tells the team to move out, unaware that something is watching them.
That night, Yarrow talks about Jeffrey’s son and he invites her to see the child when they get back. Jeffrey talks about how his grandfather was killed by a kreetor and how he’s been haunted by dreams of the creatures ever since. Wolowicz and Hughes confront Jeffrey and insist that it’s a mistake to abandon Kim. Jeffrey insists it’s his mistake and they’re interrupted when Kim’s screams echo through the woods. The kreetor throws a wooden spear into the camp, taking Hughes through the chest. Jeffrey tries to revive him and Hughes runs off into the woods. After a few seconds his screams and gunshots cut off.
The next morning, Jeffrey and Yarrow get orders from command to fall back to the checkpoint. Jeffrey tells Yarrow to go on without him. She refuses to abandon him and Jeffrey reluctantly agrees to let her accompany him. They search the woods, following a trail of broken branches, and find Wolowicz and Kim, their corpses strung up from a tree. As they leave, the kreetor throws another spear at them and just misses. Jeffrey opens fire and misses, and the kreetor grabs Yarrow and pulls her into the woods. Jeffrey hears Yarrow screams and follows them. The sergeant is strung up from a tree, still alive. Jeff carefully moves in and starts to cut her down. The kreetor knocks him out, kills Yarrow, and then hauls Jeffrey away.
Jeffrey wakes up in a cave lit by candles and filled with relics from the past. He spots a knife and grabs it, and hears a woman sobbing. He discovers the kreetor kneeling by a pregnant woman. It stands up and reveals a totally human visage. It says that the woman is dead and he’s too late. Jeffrey attacks him, accusing him of murder. The kreetor disarms him and says he hasn’t murdered anyone. He uses the knife to cut off Jeffrey’s hand, revealing that he’s a cyborg. The kreetor explains that human DNA was mixed with cybernetic humanoid parts to create Jeff’s race. The human beings created Jeff’s people, hence the term “kreetor”: “creator.” He’s prepared to kill every last soulless cyborg, but Jeffrey grabs a spear and kills him.
Later, Jeffrey returns home and checks on his wife and child. Kelly is worried but Jeffrey assures her that he killed the last kreetor. He checks his arm, and the hand that has been reattached. When she wonders if there are any more left, he assures her that they’ll find them and kill them. Jeffrey then tells Kelly to unplug the baby and come to bed.
