The Path - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
At a coffee shop, Ally Warner and her boyfriend Devin come in to collect drinks. A couple of customers are reading a parody tabloid article and say it isn’t funny. Ally, who wrote the article, defends it. Her boyfriend takes off and Ally sits down. She hears a man at a nearby booth telling a woman that everything will be okay. The man refuses any payment and she leaves, thanking him profusely. Ally asks the man what he does and he explains that he shows people the path they’re meant to travel on, and he was born with the gift. Ally is suspicious but the man insists there’s no catch. She asks him to tell her path and he takes her hands. He concentrates and then tells her that she’s unhappy at work. She asks if she will get a job offer and he tells her an opportunity awaits, but she needs to seek it out. Unimpressed, Ally walks away.

Ally follows up on the resumes she sent out and discovers that one of the magazines is interested in hiring her. She goes to see the man at the coffee shop, who introduces himself as Kneigh. It soon becomes clear she wants to know if her path is secure and he agrees to help. He takes her hands and then tells her she has nothing to worry about. He tells her that she has a secret admirer but won’t say anything further.

Later, Ally goes to the magazine offices and meets with Brad Holman, a boy she knew from Carson High School. They worked on the school newspaper together and Brad admits he had a crush on her. Now he’s married but says that her sense of humor would fit in perfectly with the magazine. He warns there is one potential problem: she has to move to Chicago. Her co-worker Seth encourages her to take the job and Ally worries about how Devin will take it. Ally has to admit that Kneigh has been right both times but Seth suggests it’s just coincidence. Ally suggests that Seth see Kneigh the next day.

Ally meets with Kneigh and Seth tags along. She asks Kneigh if he can see if Devin will come along with her to Chicago. He takes her hands and then tells her to go home where she’ll find her answer. Seth is unimpressed but Kneigh says that it’s enough. When Ally and Seth arrive at Ally’s home, they find Devin in bed with another woman.

The next morning, Ally is the first into the coffee shop. When Kneigh comes in, Ally is waiting for him at his table. She wants him to determine her path again and he reluctantly takes her hands. This time he winces and then tells her not to do any traveling. When Ally says it may be her best chance at a great job, all he can do is say that he can only advise and it’s her choice.

Later, Ally is at her apartment when Seth calls. He tells her to turn on the news where there’s a broadcast on the crash of the flight she would have taken to Chicago. She goes back to Kneigh and thanks him, but asks him to tell her how she can get to Chicago. He tells her that he can’t get a reading on her and she has to come back later after she’s cleared her mind. A desperate Ally insists she needs to know now but Kneigh says that she’ll have to come back later for her answers. As Ally goes to the counter, Seth arrives and points out that she’s becoming obsessed. He gets her out of the coffee shop and out on the street. Seth tells Ally that she has to take her life back and make her own decisions. Ally insists that she has dozens of important questions and she needs Kneigh’s help. She decides to make her own decision and goes back to see Kneigh.

When Ally arrives at the coffee shop, she discovers that Kneigh has gone and the owner doesn’t know how to get hold of Kneigh. Ally waits in the coffee shop until closing time when the owner tells her to get out. Ally waits at home, ignoring Seth’s call. He leaves an apology on the answering machine and says he knows she’ll make the right decision.

The next morning, Ally wakes up late and rushes to the coffee shop. Kneigh isn’t there and she searches desperately for him, but the owner says Kneigh walked out the door. Ally runs outside and calls to him. She finally spots him crossing the street. He turns and walks back toward her… and gets hit by a car. Ally runs to him and insists that she needs his help to get back on her path. He dies before he can say anything else and Ally begs him for help, unable to decide for herself where to go or what to do.
