Rich rapper Marvin Gardens is jogging when a police car drives by. He returns home where his wife Jasmine affectionately greets him and tells him he has a meeting. After she leaves, Marvin has a phone interview with a reporter who informs him he’s ranked number 3. As he talks, Marvin checks in on his son, who is playing video games. After he hangs up, Marvin joins with his son in playing the game, then goes to exercise. As he lifts weights, Marvin feels throat pains and has a vision of being choked in a shadowy room. A police officer says that Marvin killed a man’s partner. Marvin insists he’s innocent and then snaps back to reality, gasping for breath.
Later, Marvin is preparing to go out with his wife but remembers being choked in the dark room. Marvin insists it’s pressure and suggests they stay home. She assures him he has nothing to prove and she’ll love him no matter what. Later, Marvin goes to the studio to record a song. As he heads home, the police pull him over and Marvin flashes back to the police asking him if he threw away a gun when he fled a crime scene. Marvin doesn’t remember anything and the police officers call him Dwayne. The officer apologizes for pulling Marvin over and asks for is autograph.
Marvin goes to a psychologist, Dr. Sinclair, and explains about he flashes from one life to another. He explains that he wasn’t in a gang and the name “Dwayne” doesn’t ring a bell. The doctor suspects a suppressed memory and wonders if Marvin is afraid of losing what he has. Marvin insists he’s never going back to the streets. At home, he finds his son Marvin Jr. playing with a gun and explains that he hates guns. In bed, Jasmine thanks him for going to Dr. Sinclair, who gave him some pills to focus. As she makes love to him, Marvin flashes back to being beaten in the darkened room, as the ranking officer warns Marvin that time is running out. A female detective approaches him with a glass of water: Jasmine. The detective calls him “Dwayne” and Marvin insists she’s his wife in real life and his name is Dwayne. She says he lives in the projects with his wife and sister, and if he doesn’t confess then she can’t help him. Marvin insists he’s innocent… and then wakes up as Jasmine goes to get him some water. He tries to explain about his vision then snaps at her. He apologizes, saying the pressure from finishing the record is getting to him. He promises that once it’s done the next time, he’ll be fine.
At the studio, Marvin works on his album when the lights dim and the police officers appear to him. He collapses to the floor as someone hits him, and the vision fades away. He goes back to Sinclair and demands a specialist. Sinclair advances on Marvin, who finds himself back in the room and Sinclair is his interrogator, demanding that he confess to the killing of a cop. They beat him but Marvin stands by his innocence. He snaps back to reality and Sinclair suggests they continue. Marvin refuses, insisting he has the will and the talent and has made the life he deserves. Marvin goes back home and assures his wife and son they’ll be moving to a larger place once the record comes out. He assures Jasmine that there won’t be any more visions.
Later, Marvin is exercising but finds himself in the room. The female detective determines that Marvin/Dwayne is alive but his mind has snapped. An officer comes in and informs the lead officer, Sinclair, that they found the real shooter. The female detective finds paper with lyrics on it… Marvin’s lyrics.
