Rewind - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
In Las Vegas, Jonah Beech is talking to his girlfriend April about Trevor Black, a casino owner, who he played against. He describes how Trevor bluffed him and then explained that the house always wins. April says he can’t keep losing money but Jonah says he just wants to beat the house once and then they can run away together. He asks for $500 from their restaurant account and April tells him no.

As Jonah leaves the casino, a homeless man asks for $5 to get a meal. Jonah admits he only has $3 and the homeless man offers him a wager on the coin flips. The homeless man loses the first flip but Jonah gives him the money anyway. In return, the homeless man gives him a crudely repaired cassette recorder. Jonah runs off but misses his bus as a newlywed couple emerges. As he waits, he studies the device and turns it on. Time rewinds and he sees the bus that he missed the first time pull up and the same newlywed couple emerge.

As Jonah stares at the device, a woman bumps against him and walks by. Jonah tests the device again and rewinds time up to five minutes. He goes home and tries to explain to April, demonstrating the device. However, she doesn’t “rewind” with him and has no idea what he’s talking about. He decides not to try and explain but claims it’s a device he uses to build his motivation. April realizes that he plans to get back into the game. She shuts off the light and goes back to sleep. He keeps rewinding time and keeps trying different stories until he lies and says his mother needs a colon transplant. Then he says that he plans to have a son and one day he wants to be able to tell him he stayed in the game. She reluctantly agrees to give him $200 from their restaurant account and tells him to do what he needs to do and then walk away.

The next day, Jonah goes into the bathroom and rigs the tape recorder beneath his pant leg with a hidden wire to activate it when he stomps his heel. He hits the casino tables and begins winning, using the device to rewind time when necessary to turn a call into a fold. Jonah boasts of how he can go back in time to the other players, who don’t believe him. He’s soon far ahead on chips. Trevor watches on the casino cameras and tells his men to bring Jonah to him.

The security guards bring Jonah in and Trevor figures that he’s got something. He tells him to be there that night for the big game. Jonah goes to give April the $200 plus interest and tells her he’s won $50,000. He plans to take Trevor and there’s no stopping him, but April warns that Trevor always wins. Jonah insists he has an edge but April says he has a problem.

Jonah returns for five-card draw against Trevor and the others. The first time he loses, he uses his device and wins the pot. As the other players drop out, Jonah continues to win and Trevor congratulates him on the night he’s having. As April comes in with food, Jonah suggests they up the stakes. Trevor agrees but suggests they take a break. As they wait, April notes it’s a lot of money and Jonah wishes that his father could see him now. She suggests he walk away but Jonah wants to take Trevor for everything he has and know that Jonah beat him with skill, not luck. She asks about the restaurant but Jonah insists he’s not going to let it get away from him this time. She realizes he’s right and walks away from him.

Jonah and Trevor sit down and Jonah calls on a large pot. Trevor folds and Jonah starts to smile. He explains he won with a pair of 3s and Trevor admits he had two pairs. Trevor then hits a device of his own and time rewinds. Jonah realizes something is wrong but goes through the same bet… and this time Trevor calls. Jonah tries to use his own device but Trevor’s men grab him and take the device away before he can activate it. Trevor reveals he has an improved model of the same device, and tells Jonah that the house always wins.
