Ultimate Fighter Heavyweights Finale - Recap

Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan call the action. The first fight is Marcus Jones vs. Matt Mitrione. Promos are shown for both guys. In Round One, the two grapple, Jones takes him down to the ground, Two grapple again on floor, two fight for petition, and Mitrione tries to stand up. Two strike again, then Jones throws a right and then tries to take Mitrione down again. Mitrione, however, blocks it. The two grapple on the cage. Two stand up to strike then Jones catches Mitrione in a guillotine.Mitrione hangs in and gets out, but Jones has him at guard. Jones takes Mitrione down again. The two then stand to strike then Mitrione out of nowhere catches Jones with rights and lefts and the two grapple on mat as horn sounds.

In Round Two within the first minute, Mitrione lands a straight flush to Jones knocking him straight out. The referee stops the fight for winner Matt Mitrione.

We see promos for UFC 107. The next fight is Frank Edgar vs. Matt Veach. Goldberg says that Edgar is a contender. In Round One, Veach goes for the takedown, but Edgar blocks it. The two grapple, then Edgar gives Veach a midkick. Veach then gives him a big slam. In the next tango, Veach delivers another slam. The two stand up again as Edgar is able to land a kick and punch. Veach throws a right that doesn’t connect. The two are tentative for a minute then Edgar lands a jab. Veach throws a couple more rights that don’t connect. Edgar throws a kick that is caught by Veach as horn sounds. In Round Two, Veach goes for the takedown but again is blocked by Edgar.Two strike again. Edgar throws a right, but Veach moves away. Edgar catches Veach with a big shot. Edgar then gets on top of Veach. Veach tries to move by turning his body. He, however, shows his backside to Edgar who uses the opening to apply a rear naked choke. Eventually, Veach taps out to the winner Frank Edgar. Mike Goldberg says that this is Veach’s first loss.

Goldberg says the next is Kimbo Slice vs. Huuston Alexander, but it’s Mark Bocek vs. Joe Brammer.. We see profiles for both guys. Joe Rogan says Bocek has “phenomal takedowns”. Goldberg says the “wrestling helps out his jijitus game.” The Tale of the Tape shows this fight even with the exception of reach advantage by Bocek.

In Round One, we see a big kick by Brammer, then he comes out swinging. Bocek tries to come in with a punch, but Brammer dodges it. Brammer kicks and strikes a couple more times. Two grapple next to the cage .Bocek delivers a slam to Brammer. He then tries a rear naked choke, but Brammer hangs in. However, as with previous fight, Brammer is unable to counter the choke and taps out. Brammer was also undefeated

We move on to the Kimbo / Houston fight. We see a profile for Kimbo and Houston. Goldberg cracks a joke saying that “Houston will have a problem.”For the bulk of this fight both fighters would be remarkably tentative. The crowd boos this fight several. Alexander circles Kimbo around many times while Kimbo just stands there not doing much. The action really starts when the two grapple on the cage. They swing at each other to the delight of the fans. Then Alexander continues the pattern of hit and dodger. He does manage to land several kicks to Kimbo’s body which do seem to affect Slice. Eventually horn sounds for the round. Round Two is a repetition of Round One with a couple of exceptions. Kimbo is able to execute a takedown then a suplex type of move to Alexander. Alexander hangs in and manages offense of his own. Kimbo tries a choke, but Alexander is able to land a couple of head shots to free himself. Although Round Two is a repletion of Round One, Kimbo does come ahead in points. In Round Three, Alexander still does his hit and dodge thing. Every once in a while the two fighters go at it with the crowd cheering. Despite having a strength advantage, Slice can’t put away Alexander. Alexander lands a jab, then Kimbo lands a strike. The highlight of this round would see Alexander knocking down Kimbo with a big kick to the body. Kimbo is able to recover though. Two grapple on cage, Kimbo gets him at half guard. The referee calls for break. The two stand up and strike. Alexander lands a hard right rocking Kimbo. The horn sounds with both fighters putting a decent showing. The fight goes to the judges who declare Kimbo the winner.

Intermission sees Joe Rogan interview Diego Sanchez and BJ Penn.

The next fight would be Matt Hammill vs.John Jones. This fight would be controversial due to the decision of the referee. In Round One, both fighters start off tentative then starting hitting each other. Eventually they start grappling toward the cage then come to the center to fight. Jones grabs Hammill and then throws him on the mat. He wails away at Hamill with no defense by Hammill. Hammill is now bleeding around the eyes. Jones starts landing elbows. Referee temporary breaks the fight for what he perceives is an illegal hit by Jones. He then takes another look at Hammill to see if he can continue then stops the fight. The winner seems to be Jones. Then a couple of moments the referee says he disqualified Jones for his illegal hit and has given the win to Hammill.

We get technical difficulties for our next fight which is Darrill Schoonover vs. James McSweeney. We resume with McSweeney having Schoonover in a guillotine. Schoonover temporarily gets out of it but then gets caught in the choke again. McSweeney now has Schoonover at guard. Schoonover gets hit by McSweeney. He is now control this fight. Schoonover manages to stay alive. The two stand but then Schoonover gets caught by a big knee by McSweeney.

The fight moves to Round Two. Schhonover comes out aggressively but isn’t able to do damage on McSweeney. McSweeney lands a shot knocking down Schhonover. Schoonover tries an arm bar on McSweeney. Much like, Round One McSweeney is able to control this round but can’t quite put away Schoonover, so we move to a Round Three.

In Round Three, the two go at it. After a big scrap, the two are striking. Schoonover tries a strike but misses. McSweeney lands a big knee, followed by another one that puts away Schoonover. The referee eventually stops the fight for the winner James McSweeney.

After the fight, Dana White reveals the coaches for Season Eleven: Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz. We arrive at the main event Roy Nelson vs. Brendan Schaub for the six figure contract. We see profiles for both men. This fight goes as many of Roy’s fight. Nelson uses his large girth to put his opponent down and smother then with his large weight.

Schaub gets an early advantage, but Roy puts him down. The two exchange for a while with both fighters taking down. In a surprise though, Schaub gets knocked by a big shot by Roy. Nelson wins and gets the contract.
