Clips from the last episode are shown between the fights of Gray Maynard and Brandon Melendez. We then see highlights from the Cole Miller and Joe Lauzon fight. We see then the training session for Jens Pulver. Brandon Melendez and Jens Pulver start fighting over the training getting hard. Brandon hurt his hand and takes offense to Jens pushing him like other fighters.In the words of Pulver he "is half assing his way to the quarterfinals".Brandon even contemplates training with BJ Penn. We now see Team Penn training. BJ says Gray was his number one pick. Gray says how he has known Penn for a long time. BJ, without a mouthpiece, spars with Gray. Back to Team Pulver, Brandon approaches Jens about training with BJ but Pulver hates the idea. Pulver talks him out of doing it. Back to Team Penn, BJ announces the special guest instructor, it's Randy Couture. Nate Diaz and Cole Miller play jokes on one another. Diaz interrupts Miller's sleep while Cole decides to mess up Diaz's bed.Diaz throws baby powder on him and the two call a truce. We see Brandon training hard to make weight for his fight. He talks about the competition being a lot harder than it looks. Brandon makes the weight. Dana says that if Gray takes him the fight will be his.Fight day comes but BJ thinks Gray is overtraining himself for the fight. The Tale of The Tape is shown Brandon has an advanrage in every category including the age. Round 1 begins with Gray taking down Brandon and going for the rear naked choke. BJ screams at Gray to stay on top. The two are on the mat with Gray choking Brandon from behind. Brandon continues to fight back trying to break the lock. Brandon then swings his body and breaks the hold by now facing Gray.Now having the advantage, Melendez swings at Gray. Gray stands up but then is caught in a headlock by Brandon.The two eventually get up to standing position. Brandon lands a hard knee to Gray but Gray doesn't take the full blow as he was trying to take Brandon down. Melendez now applies a front choke but Maynard has the strength to break the hold. He is now on top of him and starts raining down shots on him.Maynard reapplies the rear naked choke.The two fighters move over the octagon with Maynard still in control. Melendez tries to push Gray's arms off him. With five seconds left in the first, Brandon is able to break Maynard's hold, he stands up only to be slammed down again by him as the horn sounds. Round 2 starts with both fighters swinging wildly. Brandon tries a high knee lift but misses.The two do the same exchange but this time Gray is able to land a couple of rights while Brandon still misses. Gray following BJ's advice tries to Brandon down but ends up on a guillotine choke.Gray is able to break the hold as Melendez seems out of breath.The two stand up but Gray falls down when Brandon flips his right leg over. Brandon has a wide opening for his fists as Grey closes up.Gray mounts himself on top of Brandon.Gray now has top positioning on Melendez for the next thirty seconds. Brandon is now visibly bleeding from the mouth. Brandon manages to get up to the fence and the two fighters do stand up boxing again. Gray though wants to take down Melendez and once again finds himself in a guillotine choke.BJ screams at Maynard to mount him. Gray tries to move around to get positioning on Melendez. He eventually catches Brandon his guillotine choke. This time somebody taps it's Brandon Melendez. After the fight, sums up how it was the best strategy for Maynard to take Brandon off his feet. Even Jens Pulver gives the first round to Maynard. BJ acknowledges that Brandon had chances to win the fight by the many submissions he tried. Melendez says he is grateful for the opportunity.
