1934. With Prohibition having been repealed the Mobs were in need of new sources of income. One they knew best was extortion. Frank "the Enforcer" Nitti is assigned to bring the small and large theater owners into a protective "association." When brutal beatings and destruction begin occurring with regularity in the theaters, Ness and the Untouchables are assigned to the case. Episode Notes

Unlike other episodes, Frank Nitti's role in the mob hierarchy is different here. He's not the big boss running things from the head of a conference table in the Montmarte Cafe. Here, he's merely another mob operative and it's a sinister, unseen council that calls the shots and pulls the strings.

In this episode another Untouchable bites the dust as Cam Allison would be killed off when Anthony George decided to leave the series at the end of the show's first season. George would be replaced by Paul Picerni beginning in Season Two. Picerni would remain with the show for the remainder of its run.

Although the character of Frank Nitti dies at the end of this episode, he would be resurrected in Season Two and continue as a recurring character until the end of the series' run.

Take special note of the performance of Frank DeKova in this episode. Though he has no dialogue he manages expertly to convey a strong sense of menace.

Though he appeared in 27 episodes, this is the only one in which Bruce Gordon is billed as a special guest star in the credits.

Episode Quotes

Narrator: The only thing the Mob had to sell was fear but business was good.

Nitti: I got no time, Mario. I'm hot.
Mario: For this you better make time.

Lennox: I'll tell him but he's not gonna like it.
Nitti: Who cares what he likes? Just tell him.

Lennox: The boys had a meeting. They want you to sit tight.
Rogers: What does that mean?
Lennox: It means sit tight.

Nitti: (about Miller) Enough of this! Is he gonna deal or ain't he?

Episode Goofs

In the climactic shootout sequence, Frank Nitti fires way more than six shots from his revolver at the Untouchables.

Analysis

A slam bang season finale that was really the only one in show history. The other three season enders were very mediocre compared to this one. We get to see Bruce Gordon at his nastiest here and even though Frank Nitti dies at the end he would be resurrected for the remaining run of the series.
