| Season One began with a great premiere episode, The Empty Chair. This episode tied up some loose ends from the show's pilot and also introduced Frank Nitti who would be the show's major recurring villain. After the premiere The Untouchables sort of experimented a bit to gets its feet wet and discover what worked and what didn't. You had several mediocre episodes such as Vincent "Mad Dog" Coll, Ma Barker and Her Boys, The Jake Lingle Killing, and The Artichoke King. The first season never really hit its stride until episode 9-The Tri-State Gang. This one was followed by the equally powerful Dutch Schultz Story and the show was off and running. The season peaked with the two-part Unhired Assassin which was followed by a couple of mediocre episodes (Doreen Maney Story, Portrait of a Thief) and a downright terrible episode (Head of Fire, Feet of Clay). But all was redeemed by the explosive Frank Nitti Story which served as Season One's finale.
One difference between this season and subsequent ones was that there were several cast changes during its course. Chuck Hicks, who played Lamar Kane, was killed off in Episode 9 and Jerry Paris, who played Martin Flaherty, left the series in mid-season and was replaced by Anthony George as Cam Allison. George's character would be killed off in the season finale. Paul Picerni would take his place beginning in Season Two. | |
