  Season 4
Season Four was the last (and most definitely least) season of The Untouchables. The show was very controversial in its day both for its violent content and its portrayal of Italian-Americans as gangsters. So, to appease show critics, Desilu Studios, which produced the show, decided to water down its content. The result was the mishmash that was Season Four.

Things started out okay with a great premiere episode, The Night They Shot Santa Claus, but quickly went downhill after that. Boredom, pathos, and sometimes downright ludicrousness seemed to be the norm. Things weren't helped by the fact that five episodes were used basically as pilots for possible spin-off series. The screen time for the Untouchables themselves went down as did the violence content.

Needless to say, this kinder and gentler Untouchables was not a winner in the ratings. Seeking to rectify things, the producers brought back Bruce Gordon as Frank Nitti (who had been dropped as a recurring character at the end of Season Three) for three mid-season episodes. This helped but only to a point. The show was fading fast and it seemed that everyone knew it--writers, actors, and producers.

Despite the quagmire that Season Four became there are some decent episodes amongst all the rubble. All three Nitti episodes are good plus A Fist of Five which contained a great guest shot from Lee Marvin. Other episodes worth a look include Junk Man, Butcher's Boy, Blues for a Gone Goose, The Jazz Man, and One Last Killing. Plus The Floyd Gibbons Story which was the pilot for a possible spin-off about a 1930s reporter named Floyd Gibbons.
