Caroline hooked up with Damon in the last episode and he did decide to turn her neck into a feast. She wakes up pretty confused and she has a giant bite mark and sees that Damon is sleeping next to her. She starts to remember what happened with him and it was a pretty intense sexual experience. She becomes scared and tries to sneak out of the house. She isn't successful as he appears out of nowhere. He thinks that they should have breakfast and really he means that he needs more of her blood.
It is football season and all of the kids are getting ready for that. Elena is talking to her best friend about Stefan. Bonnie is creeped out by Stefan and doesn't trust him. Bonnie thinks that Elena should date more than just one guy or at least keep her options open. Elena doesn't get why she shouldn't just date him and only him because he's attractive and sweet. Vicki is trying to get Jeremy to be her friend again even though she broke his heart. She got tickets to go see The Posers and would like for him to go with her. He isn't into it because she has decided to be with Tyler instead and she has just messed with him too much.
Elena and Stefan are going to class when she asks that he come have dinner with her and her best friend. She feels like they need to get to know one another so that Bonnie can feel more comfortable about him. While they are talking it seems that they have an audience. Matt and Tyler watch them talk and Tyler thinks that Stefan should be punished. He throws a speeding football at Stefan's head from behind and Stefan ends up catching it. He throws it back to Tyler and that's that. Elena is shocked by what just happened and thinks that Stefan should try out for football.
It is time for history class and Bonnie is having some issues with numbers. She's worried that something is going to happen surrounding the following numbers: 22, 14, and 8. Tanner decides to mess with Stefan more about historical dates. They get into a bit of a war themselves over them. Stefan beats him out again. Everyone is gracious that someone has knocked the cocky teacher off his high horse. Not only that but it seems to have impressed Elena even more.
School is over and Stefan is in the bleachers considering whether or not he really wants to be on the football team. He goes to ask the coach and apparently his history teacher does both. He begs to at least be able to try out and soon enough Tanner finds it to be a good idea cause he's oh so sure that Stefan won't be that good anyway. Elena has also decided to go back on the cheerleading team. They notice that Caroline isn't around and Bonnie says she's been calling her. Eventually Caroline shows up and is dropped off by Damon. She is really braggy about the fact that she got the "other brother".
Stefan seems to be the new star player as he impresses everyone. Tyler isn't too pleased about it and Stefan lets himself get tackled by Tyler just to make him feel alright with himself, apparently. After that he goes home and catches his creepy brother reading the other's diary. He learns that Damon has a date with Caroline.
Bonnie is seeing these numbers everywhere and she finally breaks down to tell Elena about it. She thinks that maybe she really is a psychic and starts doing little tricks such as predicting where spoons are. Stefan shows up and tries to warm Bonnie up by talking about the Salem witches and saying that they were more than just witches but the best example of strong women. Caroline and Damon show up and Stefan doesn't want her to invite Damon in. Unfortunately, she doesn't listen.
We flash briefly over to the Mystic Grill where everyone is just hanging out. Jeremy is kind of sad and eventually almost gets into it with Tyler because Tyler is being the town's bully as usual. Then we get back to the dinner party. Damon is trying to impress Elena by having good reflexes. He offers to help her with dishes and they have a conversation in the kitchen about all kinds of things. It seems that Elena learns that both Damon and Stefan dated Katherine. Damon changes the subject and says that she should quit cheerleading because she doesn't seem to be very happy when she does it. She tells him that it is obvious that he loved Katherine and was just as destroyed when she died. This is something that Damon didn't expect.
Damon has Caroline go in and help Elena while he talks to his brother. They argue about the fact that Damon shouldn't be doing what he is doing to Caroline because she's an actual person, not a meal. Damon will do whatever he wants to do and won't be stopped by Stefan, though. Afterwards, Elena and Stefan get in some quality make out time and they seem to be getting dirty. It turns out to be a dream as Stefan turns into Damon.
It is finally time for the first game of the season and everyone is excited. Stefan gives Elena a necklace that he wishes for her to wear. She puts it on and realizes that it smells a bit like some sort of herb. He has put vervane in the pendant so that she cannot be controlled or attacked by Damon or any other vampire. The game is about to start and Stefan realizes that Tyler and Jeremy are going at it. He separates the fight and Tyler decides to punch Stefan and then Jeremy goes to hit Tyler with a glass bottle. This was stopped by Stefan, too.
Elena is in the parking lot and Damon decides to go up to her and try to get with her. It doesn't work and he wonders why not. She also tells him that she's not Katherine. Elsewhere, Matt goes to Stefan to apologize for all of the drama and he just wants to be friends. Damon and Stefan get into an argument where Stefan questions Damon's lack of humanity. He thinks he is still capable of being a good person and Damon ends up eating the coach so there goes that thought.
