Elena, Damon, and Alaric travel to Duke University to study Isobel's research on folklore and paranormal phenomena, hoping to find some clues to the mystery surrounding the Lockwoods. Vanessa, a former student of Isobel's, helps them sort through the research and ends up learning more than she had anticipated. Stefan encounters a terrifying new danger in the woods, and Tyler uncovers a shocking discovery about his uncle Mason.

Vanessa: Werewolves will attack humans, but instinct and centuries of rivalry have hard wired them to hunt their prey of choice...vampires.
Damon: Well if werewolves are hunting vampires, I would know about it.
Vanessa: Not if there aren't that many werewolves left alive. Hundreds of years ago vampires hunted them almost to extinction.
Elena: Why would they do that?
Vanessa: To protect themselves. Legend has it that a werewolf bite is fatal to vampires.
Caroline: Why are you looking at him with your serious vampire look?
Stefan: My serious vampire look?
Caroline: Mmm hmm. I mean it's different from your worried vampire look. Neither of which stray too far from your "Hey it's Tuesday" look.
Stefan: Oh, I get it. Okay. You think I'm, um, you think I'm too serious. Is that it?
Caroline: I mean I wasn't going to say it like that but...
Caroline: So you're saying that now, I'm basically an insecure, neurotic, control freak on crack?
Stefan: Well I wasn't going to say it like that, but...
Stefan: Thanks for coming Rick.
Damon: Can I get you something to drink, coffee, bourbon, bourbon and coffee?
Elena: Here. Take this.
Vanessa: Does vervain really work?
Damon: No. Not at all.
Vanessa: Can he hear us?
Damon: No, that would be creepy.
Vanessa: Can he read minds too?
Damon: Well, if you want to see me naked, all you have to do is ask.
Damon: Any luck?
Elena: There's nothing in here about Katherine that we don't already know.
Damon: Aww man! You know it's a bummer that we aren't friends any more because I can tell you what I know.
Elena: Now who's' manipulating who?
While at the Lockwood swimming hole party, Caroline's make-up changes from being very heavy and dark around her eyes, to hardly visible.
In the bonus material on the DVD for this episode, it is revealed that Katherine's date of birth is June 22nd, 1642. However, later in this season, Katherine is revealed to have given birth to a daughter in 1490, more than 150 years before her supposed birth.
The Wolf Man:
Damon says that werewolves are "way too Lon Chaney."
