Elena and Stefan start getting friendly in the morning; same time and
action, different place for Katherine and Mason. Elena pauses things to
go decorate at the Lockwood's. She's worried about him being around
Mason, what with Mason's effort at killing him yesterday. He wants to
join her there, keep an eye on her. Elena fears Katherine will kill
Stefan if he finds out they are feigning their fights.
Katherine asks Mason where the moonstone is. He tells her it's somewhere
safe. Doesn't he trust her? Mason doesn't trust anyone. She says they'll
live "happily ever after" when he gives it to her. He promises to bring
it tonight.
At Elena's, she feeds Stefan a tiny drop of her blood to help him get
used to it.
Jeremy visits Damon to tell him Tyler isn't a werewolf yet but Mason is,
and is looking for the moonstone. Jeremy says he knows where it is.
Damon has no respect for Jeremy, and keeps trying to shove him out the
door. He asks if Elena knows what is going on, and Jeremy says no.
Prepping for the masquerade at the Lockwood's, Jenna invites Stefan over
for dinner that night. He says he and Elena are on the outs, but she
heard them this morning, and tells him she's a light sleeper.
Bonnie wants to make sure Caroline won't be in attendance. She doesn't
appreciate Elena taking Caroline's side; she feels like she lost both of
them. Elena wants to go someplace quiet so they can talk. She extends
her hand, and Bonnie takes it.
Caroline checks on her mom, Sheriff Forbes. She sees the tray and
notices her mom barely ate. The doctor says her system is almost clear
of the vervain. They should have her freshly compelled and back in her
own bed by tonight. At first she refuses to speak to her, but when
Caroline angrily says it's just like before she was a vampire, nothing's
changed, she starts to open up a bit. She asks Caroline if she's really
dead. Caroline says "yes, and no" and stays to talk.
Aldric brings Isobel's werewolf research from Duke to Damon. He's
surprised to find Jeremy there and he, too, asks if Elena knows.
According to Aztec legend, the moonstone sealed the werewolf curse. Ric
thinks Mason probably believes it has the ability to break the curse.
Elena brings Bonnie up to speed on her fake fighting with Stefan. Bonnie
is upset because she is so far out of the loop, she didn't even know
Elena and Stefan were fighting. Elena apologizes. Bonnie says she knows
where Elena stands, and where she stands, but she doesn't know where
'they' stand. She tells Bonnie that she is her best friend, and she
didn't mean to let this craziness get in the way of their friendship.
She reminds her that Caroline needs her, but Bonnie isn't ready for
that. Caroline is a vampire, and that makes their friendship impossible.
They head back to the preparations for the ball.
Mason sees Stefan setting up outside and politely says he's surprised to
see him there. Or anywhere, really. He checks they didn't do anything to
the sheriff. Stefan tells her she's fine, but from now on Mason will
have to do his own dirty work. Mason says that won't be a problem.
Mason bumps into Bonnie and she sees something. Stefan checks to see if
she's okay, and she tells him she saw Mason kissing Elena. Stefan tells
her she didn't see Elena; she saw Katherine.
Damon tells Elena that Jeremy is butting in. She talks to Jeremy, but he
refuses to hear reason. He tells her he wouldn't even be in this mess if
it wasn't for her, so she really doesn't get to tell him what to do.
Damon and Stefan touch base about Katherine, Mason and the moonstone.
Stefan slaps Damon upside the head for involving Jeremy, but Damon
retorts that he's playing Indiana Jones, he involved himself.
Jeremy talks to Tyler about the moonstone, saying he did some research
on it and wants to see it again. Tyler asks what he found out, and
Jeremy alludes to the Aztec legend. Tyler tells him he gave it to Mason.
He's done with legends and curses, and Tyler doesn't want anything more
to do with it.
Elena texts Stefan, wanting to know what's going on. He tells her, but
it's not enough information, so she texts back that she can't wait, she
needs him to call. When he doesn't, she calls him. He takes the call,
and asks Bonnie and Damon to play nice in his absence.
Damon wants Bonnie to touch Mason again and see if he gave Katherine the
moonstone, but she tells him her abilities don't work like that. She
can't ask specific questions and get answers. He asks her about that
little witch juju thing she does on him, where his brain bursts into
flames. Bonnie explains it's her giving him an aneurysm over and over
again, but he heals so fast she never gets anywhere. He wants her to do
it to Mason, explaining he and Katherine are the bad guys.
Mason finds Bonnie trying to unload a table that's too heavy for her,
and offers to help. She does the juju thing, and he falls to his knees
in pain, clutching his temples. Stefan knocks him out, and he and Damon
load him up and take him away.
Caroline tells her mom about drinking blood from bags from the hospital.
It's not fresh, so it doesn't taste as good, but it keeps her alive. Her
mom asks if she steals the blood and she says Damon does, she just sort
of pilfers his supply. So - if she does that, she doesn't need to kill?
Caroline answers honestly. She wants to; but she can control her urges.
She's getting better at it. She's better than Stefan. He's a bit of a
problem drinker. Her mom tells her she doesn't want this for her, but
Caroline says "When life gives you lemons ..." and notes that Damon is
home.
Damon and Bonnie bring Mason to Damon's house. She notes that he's not
going to be out much longer. Damon reaches in Masons's bag and finds
heavy chains. Bonnie touches Mason and tries to see what she can learn.
Damon tells her to find out if he gave it to Katherine, where she is,
and what they have planned. He doesn't ask much. She says the moonstone
is somewhere small and dark with water - a well. Mason comes to and
grabs Bonnie's arm. Damon helps her, and Mason starts to lose
consciousness again as Bonnie leaves. Damon slugs him and tells him to
wake up, wolf-boy.
Caroline greets Bonnie as she's leaving. Bonnie asks after Sheriff
Forbes, telling Caroline that Elena filled her in on everything.
Caroline says she'll be taking her home tonight. She asks if they were
able to find the moonstone and Bonnie says no, not yet. She then asks if
Caroline remembers a well where they used to play when they were kids,
and she does. It's on the edge of the old Lockwood property. Caroline
tries to talk to her more, but Bonnie says she has to go. Caroline wants
to come along, and Bonnie issues a knee-jerk "no." When she sees that
Caroline is looking a bit hurt, she changes her mind and they leave
together.
At the ball preparations, Matt asks Elena where Caroline is and if she's
seeing someone. Elena realizes he's serious, and tells him no. She's
not. Tyler asks if anybody has seen Mason, and Stefan tells him he took
off and wasn't sure when he'd be back. Bonnie texts Stefan about the
well, and he heads out. Elena follows him.
Damon warms up a poker in the fire. Mason fights his chains, and Damon
declares him feisty. In Mason's attempt to escape, he throws the chair
he's on over. He's on his back on the floor when Damon singes him to
test his pain threshold. Mason shrieks, and Damon is happy to see it. He
was afraid Mason would be some beast master with no affinity for pain.
He also notes that Mason heals quickly, and that's not good. Oh, well;
he'll just have to keep applying the pain. Mason gets branded again when
he won't tell Damon what Katherine is up to.
Stefan walks through the woods to the well. Elena asks him what's going
on, and he tells her that Bonnie thinks the moonstone is down there. He
peers down the well then jumps down. The water has vervain in it, and
he's being burned, badly. He can't get out. Caroline arrives and is
ready to throw herself down the well to help him, but Elena cautions her
about the vervain, so she grabs a nearby chain.
Damon continues interrogating and torturing Mason. Jeremy joins him with
news of a plant called wolf's bane. Various internet searches say it's
toxic, or it causes lycanthropy, or it protects people. Damon touches
some to Mason's face as he asks again what Katherine is up to. It burns
Mason. Jeremy watches uncomfortably as Damon shoves it in Mason's face.
Damon asks again, and Mason tells him that Katherine is here with him,
and asks if he's jealous. Damon notices he's been rude. He didn't offer
Mason anything to eat. He shoves the wolf's bane in Mason's mouth.
At the well, Bonnie shows up and they lower Elena down into the well.
Stefan's under water and covered with burns when she reaches him. She
wraps the chain around him and Caroline pulls him up. At the bottom of
the well, Elena looks for the moonstone. She finds a box just as a snake
goes for her. She flips it away, and Caroline hauls her up with the box.
When Elena sees how hurt Stefan is, she cuts her hand and feeds her
blood to sustain him.
Mason tells Damon that Katherine is getting the moonstone for him to
break his werewolf curse, because she loves him. Damon laughs at him.
"Katherine doesn't love you, she's using you, you moron," Damon says.
Damon tells Jeremy to take a walk, but he refuses to leave. Mason cries
and asks Jeremy to help Tyler. Damon knocks Jeremy down and says if he
wants to be part of this, here's his fist lesson: Kill or be killed.
Mason is a werewolf, he'd kill Damon first chance he got. Jeremy pulls
himself together, and leaves.
Mason says he loves Katherine but Damon warns him that she'll only rip
his heart out. "Let me do it for her," Damon says, and he does so.
Aldric and Jenna exchange kisses as they prepare dinner. Elena comes
home and sends Ric a high sign that it's all okay.
Back in the basement, Caroline gushes to her mom about the day's
adventures and how Bonnie wasn't mean to her all day. She notices her
mom looking at her funny. Her mom says she's become a "strong,
confident" person. Caroline thanks her. She tells Caroline that they
don't have to take her memories, she'll keep the secrets. Caroline says
she knows she can trust her. But she knows her mom will never trust
'them'. This day, them talking; it has meant so much to her. She compels
her mom, telling her she'll remember getting sick with the flu, and her
selfish little daughter, who loves her, will go right back to ignoring her.
Damon wraps up Mason's body as Stefan brings home the moonstone. Damon
texts Carol from Mason's phone, saying he's leaving town. He sees the
last number dialed and calls as Stefan warns him not to provoke her.
Katherine answers, wondering where he is. He tells her Mason's right
beside him, but his heart's across the room. She tells him that he
shouldn't have. He tells her about finding the moonstone and the fact it
was surrounded by vervain shows Mason didn't trust her very much. She
tells him he has no idea what he's done. Damon asks if he put a kink in
her master plan? But she says she has a plan B, C, D and so on. He knows
how that works, right? She sends her love to Stefan, and ends the call.
Elena asks Aldric where Jeremy is, and he doesn't know. At dinner, Jenna
gives the phone to Elena. It's Katherine. She asks if she enjoyed her
little rendezvous with Stefan that morning. She says she'll always know.
She'll always be one step ahead of Elena. She replaced Jenna's verbena
perfume and convinced her to stop drinking her special tea and she's
been her spy for days. Katherine asks if Elena knows how easy it is to
tell her that the world would be a much better place without her - Elena
cries "Jenna, no!" as Jenna picks up a knife and stabs herself in the gut.
At the hospital, Elena tells Jeremy that Jenna is going to be OK and
doesn't remember anything because of the compulsion. It was Katherine's
message that she can get to anybody. Jeremy holds her and tells her it's
going to be okay. And Katherine will pay.
Tyler comes to check out the masquerade ball, looking for Mason. Carol
tells him Mason headed back to Florida. She feels bad, because she knows
they really hit it off.
Elena visits Stefan. He apologizes. She thinks it's their fault. He's
near tears, waiting for what she's going to say. Jenna is in the
hospital, Jeremy could be next. She says she's been selfish because she
loves him, but it's over. She kisses him and leaves. Damon stops her,
saying he wound Katherine up, not thinking. She says it doesn't matter,
Katherine won.
In her room, Katherine apologizes to someone for seeming rattled. She
tells them her plans were messed with and she needs a werewolf. She
checks with the person she's compelling: It's Matt. He's recites what
he's supposed to do: Go after Tyler and don't stop until he kills Matt.
