Katerina - Recap

The show opened with a young girl about to give birth to an illegitimate child in 1490 Bulgaria. The potential grandmother was telling the young woman to push, push, it is almost here. With one huge last effort, the young mother pushed her baby girl into the world and it immediately was taken and wrapped into a blanket and whisked from the room. The young mother begged her mother and the midwives to allow her to see her newly born child, but only silence answered her as the grandmother tried to comfort the girl. The grandfather came into the room and demanded to know where the child was and when told, he said that that was as it should be. The new mother wept wildly in her grief, demanding to see her baby, but was tended to and then left alone in her room. Meanwhile, the baby was taken by boat to an undisclosed location.

This story was being told to Elena by Katherine, the vampire who had been mewed up behind a wall and a strong door deep in a tomb beneath a church. Klaus, the oldest vampire of them all was on Elena's trail because of the curse placed on her family back in the thirteenth century for revenge. Elena was trying to get to the bottom of the ancient family curse and she had been told by someone in the clan that the only way to obtain further information, to get to the bottom of the curse was to confront Katherine in her tomb and demand the truth. Elena had brought a very old family book and some blood for Katherine who by that time was extremely famished, nearly to the point of death. Elena had broken down the wall blocking the old metal door and had opened the door unafraid. She was unafraid of the old vampire because she knew that Katherine could not cross the magical line and harm her. Elena poured a small amount of the blood into a little plastic cup and handed it to Katherine, asking her to tell her more of the family curse, which Katherine did, eking out information bit by bit just as Elena was giving out tiny amounts of the nourishing blood to the vampire. Elena sat in the damp dirt, listening fascinated, to the ancient vampire continue her saga of trouble and hearbreak and death.

Meanwhile, lovely blond Caroline, also a vampire, was attending high school when she noticed that a new boy named Luke Martin was also at her school. He introduced himself to her and seemed to fit right in, making new friends with ease. Stefan met Caroline during a break in classes, saying that he was very worried about Elena, did Caroline know where she might be? Caroline told him that she had led the girl to the tomb beneath the old church and helped her to break down the intervening wall and open the old door, warning Elena that Katherine could be very dangerous and that she felt very uneasy in leaving Elena there alone. Elena had forcefully told Caroline to just leave her there, that she was confident that she would be alright, not to worry. When Stefan heard this, he looked very wooried and told Caroline that Klaus, the oldest vampire, was back in town, wanting to kill the vampires and that he feared for Elena's life. Where could this Klaus be? Stefan thanked Caroline and headed quickly for the church to find out what had happened.

When he got there, he found Elena still sitting in the dirt, listening to Katherine's tale: the young mother had been none other than Katherine herself and she was now on the trail of her new baby, but the awful storm that night was preventing her from finding the infant. She was running through the forest being pursued by Klaus and his henchmen when she ran into two men who said that they could help her. They told her to keep on running in a certain direction and she would find a family who would help her, give her sanctuary while the two men led Klaus and his party off in another direction. She continued on through the forest, finding the hut and being taken in by the family, though the mother of the family seemed reluctant. She rested there that night and was given a horse to ride, which she took into the forest, still on the trail of her child. She did not find the child, but heard later that it had been taken from the area to parts unknown. Katherine was beside herself with grief, but was reassured that the child would be safe.

Katherine told Elena that since her child had been illegitimate that her father would not have allowed it to live, but her mother had taken pity on the baby and had it taken to safety outside of the country. A curse had been place on Katherine's head by the grandmother of the young father, thus bringing sorrow and death unto future generations. Klaus had been the father of her child. Katherine told Elena that she had made a vampire of Caroline and that she wanted to hand Elena over to Klaus, that wherever Klaus was, that death and destruction would be sure to follow.

Caroline and her girlfriend Bonnie went to a local watering hole for a meal and drinks. While there, they ran into Luka and his father, Doctor Martin, who stared at Bonnie, realizing that she was a vampire and she sensed that they were, too. They talked together for a few minutes and Bonnie left, feeling uneasy. Later during a private moment at the restaurant, Luka apologized to Bonnie for his father being a bit rude and strange, but that he knew that Bonnie was odd like him and his dad.

Stefan listened as Katherine continued her story: two years later, Katherine came home to find her entire family slaughtered by Klaus. She was inconsolable and placed a curse on Klaus and his family. Ever since, Klaus had hunted her and her descendants. Katherine told Elena that there was a special stone called a moonstone that could save her but that she did not know where the stone was at present. If she could find it, she might be saved from Klaus and the curse.
Stefan warned Elena not to believe the wicked, evil Katherine but the old vampire just smiled and told Elena that what she had told her was true.

Klaus made his presence in town known when he appeared outside a specially constructed internet cafe complete with double paned UV filtering windows. With the power of his mind, he shattered those windows, thus allowing the sun inside to burn the tender pale white skins of the vampires and other shapeshifters within. Klaus had heard with his super sensitive ears what two of the younger vampires were saying about himself and decided to take revenge. He was indeed on the trail of Elena and the other vampires, intent on their deaths.

At a posh mansion in town, high on a hill, the wicked Klaus used his strong mind to call Elena at her own home, telling him to tell Elena that with a witch's help, if she could find the much vaunted moonstone, she might be able to break the curse. Then, after hanging up the phone, Klaus got the man to stab himself straight through the heart with a sharply pointed wooden stake, killing himself. Then Klaus turned unconcernedly to another male aide and smiled.
